I need a new bed... I'm in pain!

I woke up this morning and my hip hurt worse than ever. I need a new bed BAD.

Any suggestions on types/brands?

IMO everyone likes a different type of mattress... I recommend putting on some sandals or something and heading down to a quality mattress place.

Lay on every bed like you were going to sleep on that thing; bring your significant other if you've got one. Just go to town and lay on every one of them for at least 5 minutes.

I, personally, prefer a more firm mattress with a pillow top... but that's just me.

And drop whatever cash it costs... seriously don't skimp out, you spend almost a third of your life on that bitch, it's worth the cash!

Tempurpedic saved my back.

blonda80 02-03-2011 07:29 AM

sojproductions 02-03-2011 07:33 AM

Funny to see this thread.

I started a similar one myself yesterday on another UK board.
This morning, I just purchased this Tempurpedic mattress :)

DateDoc 02-03-2011 08:12 AM

Tempur-pedic. Love mine.

Dappz 02-03-2011 08:24 AM

by air bed or water bed........

blonda80 02-03-2011 08:43 AM

tempur are so expensive, does they even deserve these money?

Bama 02-03-2011 09:00 AM

3 things you *absolutely* do not skimp on when we do what we do for a living. Find what you like and pay what it costs...
  1. A Bed
  2. A Chair
  3. A Monitor

I too prefer a firm mattress with a pillow top in the California King size. Don't forget about quality pillows & buy 3 that you think you'll use the most (firm/soft/in-between) and then get 2 of each in the firmness you don't think you'll use that much. I can't tell you the times that I went from firm/firm to firm/soft or soft/in-between for the night out of comfort. Better to have them on-hand instead of laying your head on your pillows and just not being able to get comfortable that night.

gleem 02-03-2011 09:10 AM

Had a Tempur-pedic for years, they are absolutley great if you live in a house with the temp set at 72 or less, once I moved to Florida where the temps in the house is 77/78, the beds get too squishy and they suck.

fatfoo 02-03-2011 09:14 AM

Some people sleep on a bed of nails. Perhaps you could try it.

:thumbsup Spot on. It always amazes me that people won't spend a few k for a bed but they'll gladly fork over 50k for a car.

CYF 02-03-2011 12:40 PM

No one's mentioned the Heavenly Bed yet? The one they have at all the Westin hotels?

The company that makes it has the same exact bed, except not under the Heavenly/Westin trademark, and it's slightly cheaper too.

CaptainHowdy 02-03-2011 12:45 PM

I sleep on the floor...

bignasty 02-03-2011 02:09 PM

If you have one around you, Original Mattress has some good mattress and box spring sets. I have the Regency from them, best mattress I've ever had.

Frasier 02-03-2011 02:41 PM

if you are in the USA and spending less than about 1800.00 on a king, you are buying junk that will significantly degrade in 1-2 years

HOWEVER, that being said .... Sam's and Costco have a king size pillowtop Sealy thats about 1k including the box springs. It's pretty comfortable, but the best thing about is is Sam's and Costco's 'no questions asked' 10 year warranty.

In a couple years when you can tell it's starting to sag a bit, haul it back and get a new one, no questions asked.

That and the Beauty Rest W Beds ;)

mynameisjim 02-03-2011 03:04 PM

No matter what the bed or price, they wear out in a few years. Maybe you don't notice it but everybody is different. Those with back pain or hip pain will notice just a slight amount of wear, others will never notice anything after 15 years.

But they all wear out within 5 years, it's impossible to make something that can handle your body weight for 8 hours a day to last ten years. Such materials don't exist.

Sleep number is the bomb!!

tical 02-03-2011 04:41 PM

If you're thinking about a tempurpedic, get an isoform for less than half the price. I've tried both and I love my isoform so much I bought another.

Supz 02-03-2011 04:50 PM

i personally do not like tempurpedic. I feel like your body sinks and it is a pain in the ass to get up. I have a Sterns & Foster. Something with the coils where if someone is sleeping next to you, they do not feel anything. It is extremely comfortable and is the perfect fit in between firm and plush.

~Ray 02-03-2011 10:36 PM

Thanks for all of the tips.. I need to shop a little more. I flipped my matress one last time and hope to have a new bed before the "dent" occurs.

You don't need a new bed you need more exercise. Go to the gym and start building up support mussels in your body.

Ikea.........

The Duck 02-04-2011 08:44 AM

Try this. Put the top slim mattress right on the floor and sleep on that for a couple of days. It may be uncomfortable at first but after a few days you should feel great.

It's actually the most healthy way to sleep. On a hard surface.

Oh, I stepped in here because I thought the thread title said "new in bed...I'm in pain".

I was going to suggest closing up access to the butthole.

I highly recommend tempur pedic.

Ross 02-04-2011 11:53 AM

Just bought a King size bed 4 months ago, got a Sealy Mattress and I can't recommend it enough. My girlfriend has never slept better in her life than she does in this bed.

marlboroack 02-05-2011 02:12 AM

Sleep in money, wake up nice also. In many ways

Dood 02-05-2011 04:18 AM

If you need it to be extra firm every once in a while, try placing a sheet of plywood between the mattress and box spring.

Lint 02-05-2011 05:01 AM

I sleep very well in my Duxiana bed. It is worth the investment.

I feel your pain guys (literally LOL). I am in the hunt for a new bed as well, i was thinking the tempurpedic bed's might be more marketing than actual bed but maybe i will check them out.

Thanks for the recommendations guys!

I'm happy to hear that, but there is no medical benefit sleeping on the floor.

I have a cheaper memory foam bed from Costco...
Took me a week or two to get used to it, but now I like it more than a regular coil bed...
I don't love it, but it's better..

jreg81 02-06-2011 12:43 AM

Every person is different and like others said, you must go test out some mattresses first before buying. If you buy a mattress online without every trying it, just ball up the money and throw it away instead. It would be the same thing.

I, like you, was in serious pain due to sleeping on an old, shitty mattress. Finally decided to upgrade and man was I pleasantly surprised at the difference. I feel like a million bucks now each morning. It's like night and day. I'm only 30, but before I got this new mattress, I felt like I was 60 years old getting up out of bed each morning. Aches, pains, poor balance. And yes, I eat right and exercise regularly, so it wasn't that. I'm only 155 lbs. Run, stretch and work out regularly, wear the same pant size that I did in High School. So I was like, wtf is wrong w/ me? Why Do I feel so shitty all the time.

Answer was the bed I was sleeping on. I probably could've spent more, but after a trip to a local Sleepys store and doing some research online, I decided a firm latex mattress was best for me, and I bought this. No joke, I couldn't be happier. I've only had it for a few days, so can't tell you how it'll hold up over the years, but the difference in my body is amazing.
