alf6300 02-06-2011 09:47 AM

Nice promo, thanks!
Just transferred ten domains from Moniker & Godaddy.

I have nothing against Moniker, just consolidating?

I must say while transferring from Moniker is smooth, transferring from Godaddy is a total PAIN IN THE A$$ ? they intentionally do this, of course.

no, turns out they deliberately disabled the coupon for people using the classic interface :disgust

ruff 02-06-2011 02:45 PM

Worked fine for me. Just transferred 8 domains. I'm using the new interface and the bar across the top is advertising this transfer deal.

I would have used it if they didn't have the 10 domain limit, so instead I didn't transfer any :2 cents:

NameCheap is good overall, but beware they are predominantly an eNom reseller. And hence eNom's policies, including the eNom / LegitScript partnership, applies to most NameCheap registered / managed domains too.

Is Namecheap doing something wrong here with LegitScript.com ?

Beware: eNom and NameCheap Suspend domains based on bogus claims by a fake company (referring again to LegitScript.com)

A backgrounder on LegitScript.com from a GFY perspective:

With all that said, NameCheap is a good choice for many here, but beware when you're using NameCheap, you are most often actually an eNom customer - for some here that may be a business risk they'd rather not take - there are many other good registrar choices that too offer excellent transfer-in / renewal deals.

I thought Namecheap became a stand alone registrar the last year or two ago. I seem to remember something about that change. Anybody know what happened to that? They were no longer going to be a reseller.

NameCheap Still Registers Most User Domains Through eNom

You are correct. NameCheap is an ICANN accredited registrar.

However, NameCheap still registers most user domains through eNom.

And that's where the LegitScript / eNom partnership risk comes in...

While most people won't be affected by that particular partnership, be aware it's likely eNom will, or perhaps already has, entered into other "partnerships" that could put many other domains at risk of loss.

In short, eNom is a business risk that some here seek to avoid - often when one registers domains at NameCheap, they are, in effect, really registering it at eNom.

To check whether your .com, .net, .org, .info NameCheap domain(s) has really been registered at eNom see the following links

.COM and .NET Registry
http://registrar.verisign-grs.com/whois/

.ORG Registry (whois is at the upper-right top)
http://www.pir.org/

.INFO Registry
http://www.info.info/whois

If the registrar of record says eNom or some variant - then, despite registering it NameCheap, you're really an eNom customer and eNom's policies, including their "partnerships" apply to you too - NameCheap is unable to help much, if at all, in such instances - you're often at the sole mercy of eNom!

Ron

Yepp, offer valid up until midnight, EST, between the 7th and 8th of February 2011.

Godaddy rejected two of my domains, just randomly, I guess just to mess with me. When I called my account rep, he said "oh, they didn't, did they?", he went over my account, saw no faults or errors and somehow cleared the domains and the transfer went right through. Had I not called him, they would have gotten denied again and then cancelled from Namecheap.

Namecheap is of course doing this promo to mess with Godaddy during their expensive Super Bowl commercial and all the hype they get around and from it. So I just assume Godaddy will randomly deny a few domains here and there, just to cause troubles and extra greif. When I told my account rep I was moving ten domains to Namecheap, he knew exactly the discount code and everything and didn't seem very surprised that some domains wasn't cleared for transfer.

Other shit they of course do by purpose it making you order the EPP code manually, one by one, to cause you more troubles when transferring out.

I solve this either by just sending the list to my account rep asking him to fix it, or I take the domain list up for transfers, and then I search for multiple domaisn in the domain manager. Add them to a folder I call "transfers" and then I cretate an export list of all the domains in the trasnfer folder, and make sure to include the EPP code. Saves a lot of clicking and a lot of emails.

Happy transferring!

Same experience here.
Annoyingly, Namecheap seem to automatically issue a refund when the transfer is unsuccessful.

In normal circumstances, this is good and fair business practice from their side.
In this case however, it means that the offer is now expired for me.

Godaddy is doing whatever they can in order to make the transfer-out as painful as possible. For many people the pain is not worth the couple of bucks you are saving on each domain, so they will just give up. This will probably include me.

This notice is to inform you that your domain transfer was cancelled due to the reason mentioned below.

Reason for Cancellation :
Canceled - The current registrar has rejected transfer (please contact them for details)

The refund for this cancelled transfer has been issued to your Namecheap account.
