Netflix - I cancelled

The Canadian Netflix service is pretty bad.

Just a poor selection of movies and television shows. They need to catch up with what the US viewers get before they get me back as a customer.

CyberHustler 02-10-2011 08:31 AM

Damn, seems like the only thing Canada is on top of is a map...

Glad I live in the US

woj 02-10-2011 08:33 AM

somehow get a US account? use friend's in the US address to signup or something?

but i think they track ips like hulu does so if youre coming from canada it wont work :(

i hate this about canada the US is right there but why cant we have the nice things they have :( i want sunshine and palm trees and chicks with fake tits everywhere

TheDoc 02-10-2011 08:38 AM

We cancelled netflix long ago.. We don't really watch many movies, couldn't figure out what we wanted to see, and hardly watched the movies when they came in, and we would forget to return them, so we couldn't get anymore ie: couldn't watch when I was ready.

Now with Redbox coming up on every corner in the city, it's cheaper, convenient and I can rent/watch when I have the time. It's movie section isn't as good, but for $1 you can't bitch.

TubeSubmitters 02-10-2011 08:40 AM

ok thanks a lot for sharing that valuable piece of information

GTS Mark 02-10-2011 08:50 AM

Yeah I hear you Chris, i have been sick for the past 2 weeks and have been watching Netflix like a mofo. I've pretty much seen it all at this point :(

brassmonkey 02-10-2011 08:50 AM

i subscribed to watch the first 48 and one episode was damaged. so i contact support and they erase it and don't respo

PR_Glen 02-10-2011 08:51 AM

crtc has bee messing with canadian broadcasting and entertainment capabilities forever... we get tv shows later, have to endure mandatory canadian content laws.. wouldn't be so bad if canadian tv and movies didn't suck shit as much as they do.. (although they have improved over the years)

They need to be disbanded and replaced with an elected set of officials. At least that way they would have to answer to someone.

Evil Chris 02-10-2011 09:32 AM

I like the service Netflix brings. Streaming HD movies through my PS3 is pretty good stuff, but their selection was just pitiful. Until that changes, I'll just use PPV from my cable company or the occasional rental from the video store.

_Richard_ 02-10-2011 09:40 AM

lots of canadian content for cdn netflix i heard

Antonio 02-10-2011 09:50 AM

I am guessing all the torrent sites are blocked then .... Haven’t you heard? The Internet is for free stuff - music, movies, porn, books, you name it; stealing is in and paying for shit is out, please don't make the same mistake I did - posting "where can I buy /insert name/ software, CD, DVD, book" on forums is met with mockery and disbelief...

GrouchyAdmin 02-10-2011 10:12 AM

Netflix in the US sucks, too.

They're doing their best to kill off the dvd-by-mail system and make it all streaming, but there's such a limited streaming selection, there's no point unless you want to watch a selection of a few thousand (for everything - including foreign language lessons and so forth).

The way they screw you with the DVD-by-mail is they've just upped the prices; it's now $15/month for 2 out at a time. Well, even if you stagger them, there's usually a 3 day lapse.

Day 1) send it back
Day 2) arrival
Day 3) new one ships

So, you may get 4 DVDs out a week - which seems like a bit, but who is going to use it every day, anyhow?

Agent 488 02-10-2011 10:19 AM

much better selection on the torrent sites.

SomeCreep 02-10-2011 11:28 AM

If only Netflix offered their entire DVD selection through streaming download, I would definitely be a subscriber.

Yup, this. More or less Netflix in the US is a bunch of retarded fucking indie flicks, some tv series and a bunch of foreign shit I could care less about. All first rate movies are DVD only. I have a Redbox/Blockbuster box on the corner I can rent DVDs out for a dollar a night.

They can keep their streaming garbage.

C H R I S 02-10-2011 12:58 PM

Yeah I am thinking of cancelling as well - seems those envelopes seem to sit for a long time....

Porko 02-10-2011 01:21 PM

works fantastic from my apple tv 2

Chosen 02-10-2011 03:22 PM

There is probably no Netflix where I'am now, not that I would care much if it was...

And you just gave the reason why it sucks. Rogers and Bell are doing whatever they can thru their puppet, the CRTC, to ensure Netflix Canada has subpar and slow releases so it doesn't kill their OnDemand products and hell, even cable subscriptions.

Basically, do not ever expect Netflix Canada to be a competitor up here.

Jakez 02-10-2011 04:21 PM

I agree the selection sucks but I manage to find something interesting at least a couple times a month and that is enough to make me not care about a little $5-6/mo charge. It used to be like $7.99 but they upped the prices for people who get dvds and actually lowered the price for people with only a streaming account (me), which was nice.

Also I have a crappy 2 bar wireless connection on my laptop on the other side of the house and sometimes it will stop streaming and have to reconnect, when this happens I usually get an email saying something like "We're sorry you couldn't fully enjoy X movie, we've discounted your bill for this month by X% for the inconvenience" :)

CYF 02-10-2011 04:34 PM

I've had netflix for about 4 days now and it's pretty neat. Been watching season 1 and 2 of Dexter, and some zombie movies. Middle Men should be here tomorrow in the mail.

I'm not sure how often they add new streaming movies, but I shouldn't be bored with it until sometime after my first free month.

Horny Dude 02-10-2011 09:15 PM

I downgraded to 1 disc out at a time and unlimited streaming. I just wish they had more stuff to live stream. Everything I want to see will say "Disc Only" and these are not top of the line movies, just some classic I wanted to check out. My GF wanted to see Eagle Eye and I thought, hell that has been out for a while, but it was disc only...WTF!

2MuchMark 02-10-2011 10:51 PM

Just out of curiosity does it happen to have The Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman shows from the 70's? Been aching to see those shows again..

we should probably cancel our Rogers cell phone accounts as a form of protest, they own video stores too I think, just another reason they don't want the competition

TheSenator 02-10-2011 10:57 PM

I always get free movies from the Internet. How does NetFlix work?

Yes, both. Not instant online but you can get the dvd's.

The only way to get your moneys worth, is if you get your mail early, watch the movie, and are able to get it to a late pickup mail box the same day.
This way you can get 3 shipments a week instead of 2

facialfreak 02-11-2011 02:08 AM

I was upset they would not let my sign up with my American funds Paypal card ...

But now I am not so upset .... I'll keep grabbing my movies from ISOHUNT.COM

Which is legal in Canada, provided I am not selling them for profit ....

Evil Chris 02-11-2011 08:41 AM

Wow, I never thought that this thread would bring out the pirates in everyone.

I won't say that I've never downloaded free stuff from the 'net, but the vast majority of my home entertainment is stuff I have paid for. TMN (and that cable package), Netflix which I tried and cancelled, and even rented DVDs, or ones I occasionally purchase.

I even buy most of my music still through iTunes.

CoolHandLuke 02-11-2011 11:07 AM

Netflix killing their dvds is just stupid.. That'll be the death of em..

SykkBoy 02-11-2011 11:20 AM

I'm still a netflix fanboy. Not sure if it's different in canada as far as movie selection.
Of course, I 'ma sucker for documentaries and indie movies, so NetFlix is a goldmine for me. I have the 2 disc plan plus the streaming on my iphone and wii. I ue it to catch shows on DVD (like right now, I'm introducing my fiance to the best show to get only one season: Freaks and Geeks.

I've also love their customer support. I've had damaged discs (rental people don't give a shit about handling a disc properly and are mainly fucking retards) and gotten replacements sent asap. I had a disc that was listed as having shipped yet had never arrived and they promptly sent me out a replacement.

For big, blockbuster type flicks, I'm an avid dvd buyer and also use redbox from time to time. I'm a movie geek, I do what I can to get my geek on...

I'm about 20 miles from the nearest post office, and it's not worth the gas.

Bitterly ironically, I'm about 4 miles from a RedBox, but it never has anything worthwhile.

benn626 02-11-2011 11:36 AM

Graboid all the way..

2 dvd's a week is still 8 a month. At Redbox that'd be $8 plus tax. Add in all the instant watch movies and shit, and it's definitely worth it.

bronco67 02-11-2011 10:45 PM

I've had the same movie for 8 months. I just can;t bring myself to use it that much. I DVR movies on the HD cable channels, and get the occasional Blu Ray from Blockbuster. I'm as tech-geeky as they come, but I still like to walk into the video store and actually pick up the boxes and look them.
