just dont do it, each time you check your credit rating it shows on your credit rating and a lot of the banks, credit card companies etc looks to see if your rating has been looked at. It can give the impression that you are out there trying a lot of places to get credit and you are unreliable

it is stupid as fuck and that information is old, but I was told it by a friend who was a loan officer at the credit union I was a member of back then

Viewing a copy of your credit report is NOT the same as someone running a credit check on you. Every time someone runs a credit check on you it counts as an inquiry on your credit report. Too many inquires count as a negative factor on your credit score. Also all lenders report to all 3 credit bureau's every month. So your credit is updated on a regular basis.

I use http://www.privacyguard.com/ You can request a new copy of your credit report every month. They send you an email alert if someone runs a credit report or if a new account is opened in your name. And it is very easy to dispute any discrepancies with them. You can call their 800 number and they will take care of all the paper work for you. So you don't have to waste time faxing / mailing letters to the credit bureaus yourself.

wouldn't a monthly credit check damage your credit?

Requesting a copy of your credit report from a credit monitoring services does not count as a credit inquiry. Too many credit inquires can damage your credit. Viewing your credit report from a 3rd party monitoring service does not damage your credit.
