How much money can someone steal after 30 years as the dictator of a major country with a command economy and a military reaping billions in ?off-budget? profits? Quite a bit, as it turns out.

Though Forbes Magazine lists Mexican telephone giant Carlos Slim Helu as the world?s richest man, his $50+ billion net worth may actually take a distant second to the unfathomable wealth Mubarak has managed to assemble over decades of dictatorship and years as a top military official before that.

Indeed, while the overall size of Mubarak?s personal fortune is not well documented (and for good reason, because much of that money surely vanished out of government coffers), estimates put his wealth in the realm of $70 billion, held in British and Swiss banks and in real estate holdings around the world.

Experts say Mubarak had the foresight to put most of his wealth abroad, where he and his family will still be able to get at it after his seemingly inevitable deposition. But with a net worth that would make the ancient pharaohs blush, the real question is what on earth is keeping him stubbornly hanging on to the reins of power in Egypt ? surely he has taken enough to be satisfied by now.

A few years ago , I think it was the Telegraph that did an 'alternative' to the The Times Rich List of richest in the world and most on the Times list didn't even figure on the 'alternative' list.

It was full of world leaders in these dictatorship countries. Mubarak was on the list then.

I think that the dictator was keeping all that for himself and people around him instead of investing in that country and giving that money to the people.
With that money invested right way, he could have developed democratic country the country, but because of his greed and shortsightedness they are still undeveloped and poor country...

If Mubarak had this much money he would have been listed in Forbes magazine and other reliable sources, but nothing. This is just propaganda put out by the Muslim Brotherhood. I mean honestly, look at the source quoted here, antiwar.com. An extreme radical left wing blog...hardly a reliable source. The real question is how much money does the Muslim Brotherhood have and where is it coming from? This terrorist muslim brotherhood thats trying to overthrow the Egyptian government has been funding Hammas, Hezbollah, the Talbian and other for years. That sort of funding to keep those three groups going takes billions every year.

The Military in Egypt owns a lot of the business and Commerce of the country. They have their fingers in all the pies. I don't think Mubarek would have been allowed to cream off some of the amounts quoted here.

I think it's ironic that an industry that will lay down with any shit head possible to make a buck is criticising others.

Americans need to wake the fuck up, every American pays taxes that goes directly to these two places. Israel alone gets over $3 billion per year from us. Population of Israel was 7684000 in 2010, that is $390 per israeli. per year.
