You find a phone in the streets, go to the police and... get arrested

STUDENT ARRESTED...FOR BEING HONEST

Quote:

AN HONEST student who handed in a mobile phone he found was stunned when police arrested him for theft.

Paul Leicester, 18, played the Good Samaritan when he discovered the handset lying in the street.

He rang the last number dialled and told a friend of the owner he would leave the phone at a nearby police station. But officers arrested him for ?theft by finding?, held him for four hours and took a DNA sample.

Yesterday Paul said: ?I thought I was doing the right thing and had it thrown back in my face. I wouldn?t go to the police in future. All I was doing was the honest thing. It was a shocking experience.?

Paul Markham 02-15-2011 06:26 AM

Stupid police. Have they nothing better to do than arrest people who walk in and hand in lost property?

BlackCrayon 02-15-2011 06:26 AM

arrest anyone and build a nice dna sample databank...

scarlettcontent 02-15-2011 06:28 AM

OMG doesnt make sence

amateurbfs 02-15-2011 06:47 AM

Super burn.

potter 02-15-2011 06:57 AM

Wow, that is crazy ridiculous.

Do you realize how fucking stupid that sounds? I mean literally how backwards that would be to logical thinking. Even IF you wanted to be a conspiracy looney, that would be THE most idiotic and inefficient way police/.gov could go about building a dna databank.

Think before you speak. :2 cents:

u-Bob 02-15-2011 06:57 AM

another "theft by finding" example:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...o-rubbish.html

"
Woman accused of theft after taking Tesco rubbish
A woman is facing trial for "theft by finding" after she helped herself to food thrown away by Tesco after a power cut.
"

L-Pink 02-15-2011 06:59 AM

You really can get arrested for just about anything you do.

well it seems strange to me to have a dna sample taken when being arrested for stealing something...if the cops ever said we're going to take a dna sample from me, i would refuse. not really sure whats going on over there in the UK.

Spunky 02-15-2011 07:02 AM

That will teach those good Samaritans

"THE most idiotic and inefficient way" is exactly how police and governments do everything.

Antonio 02-15-2011 07:55 AM

whatever you find on the street is yours; if it is white powder in a briefcase, leave it and walk away quickly

pornguy 02-15-2011 07:57 AM

Theft by finding. I guess that goes right along with thought crimes.

ilnjscb 02-15-2011 08:23 AM

Stupid bastards. Unless there are other circs, and it doesn't sound like it, they are idiots. Nice job turning a good gesture into a loss. No amount of money, technology and manpower can replace public trust.

Kiopa_Matt 02-15-2011 08:29 AM

For police, arrests = money & funding. Looks good in their reports when requesting resources.

seeandsee 02-15-2011 08:38 AM

you wanted police states, to fuck you in the asses

I learned a long time ago to mind your own business and keep what you find.

I don't stop to help people and I don't call the police anymore for ANYTHING.

Anytime I've tried to do the right thing, it backfires.

marketsmart 02-15-2011 08:53 AM

What do you expect from a 3rd world country..... :2 cents:

When i was a kid i found a wallet loaded with about $500 on top of a paper box. My parents made me call the guy and return it. The guy counts out every bill and says " i see you already took your reward" and shut the door in my face.. motherfucker..

They should have taught you the correct thing - you pocket ALL the cash when you return a wallet.

~Ray 02-15-2011 09:22 AM

links pulled and neg repped!!!

Tom_PM 02-15-2011 09:34 AM

... and on his birthday. Shameful.

_Richard_ 02-15-2011 09:41 AM

the 'theft by finding' is a huge load of bullshit, but the DNA sample?

on what legal basis did that happen with? fubar.

Si 02-15-2011 09:43 AM

I've returned a few things in my time and never had a problem.

Phones, cash etc.

If it happens again, dont think I will bother....

PlugRush Sascha 02-15-2011 09:46 AM

Crazy shit.

freelanceporndesigner 02-15-2011 09:51 AM

The police in the UK have unfortunately gone a bit doolally

czarina 02-15-2011 09:58 AM

poor kid, that arrest will stay in his record forever. No good deed goes unpunished.

gaffg 02-15-2011 10:31 AM

so the moral of the story is if you find a phone keep it?

No you sell it on ebay

fatfoo 02-15-2011 10:53 AM

"Theft by finding" - this is a controversial topic. Sometimes owners leave objects on the street.

Horny Dude 02-15-2011 10:54 AM

I found an iPhone and called the owner and they gave me a 100 bucks for reward. Could have sold on eBay for three times that but I would hate for some to find mine and just sell it. Karma bitches!!

Phoenix 02-15-2011 11:01 AM

guys that news site is a joke

its like the national enquirer...there is no way he was charged with anything.

Who says that's the ONLY way that they build a databank?....Also, tell us other alternatives that the gov could use?....

So why don't YOU think before you speak? :2 cents:

beerptrol 02-15-2011 11:12 AM

note to self. just chuck the lost shit you find into the garbage or contact the owner directly. Fuck the police

MrBottomTooth 02-15-2011 11:14 AM

Using their logic, the police should technically be charged with theft since they are now in possession of the stolen phone.

chaze 02-15-2011 11:34 AM

This is stupid but you can't let bad people stop you from being good even they are are cops. When you do this then your soul pays the price. I have been ripped off, jumped, and lied to countless times, but I still treat people nice and would help anyone if they needed when I can.

metalheadsunite 02-15-2011 01:48 PM

This is a perfect example of a super liberal politically correct society. People talk about this all the time here but they forget that such a society already exists, and it's called the United Kingdom.

Hope everyone's pleased with the direction this country is going because there's countless examples happening "across the pond" of how we will end up.

LiveDose 02-15-2011 02:01 PM

That is simply retarded. What a bunch of stupid fucks.

now that i think about it, the only thing those cops did was stir a huge international nest that has resulted in national embarrassment

is that the only option cops have for change?

I know a guy who found a huge bag of weed, called the cops to turn it in and he is now in PRISON serving 18 months for possession.

No it was not in the news, not every crime hits the news.

PiracyPitbull 02-15-2011 03:19 PM

Found a Blackberry recently - called the owners parents, got her address and just posted it.

She sent $20 back in the mail. Do unto others an all that :) No need to be a douche.
