Arizona people - what's Mesa like?

been searching Zillow all day for homes in the Phoenix area and the nicest homes I found at the target price were in Mesa. Same caliber homes in some parts of Scottsdale and Phoenix are a few hundred thousand more.

baddog 02-26-2011 10:51 PM

I stayed there once. Seemed like the low income area. Heavy Hispanic presence. Just my observation.

BlacksOnBlondes 02-26-2011 10:53 PM

It's MORMONVILLE. Almost as bad as Utah. One of the biggest Mormon cities in the world. Don't move to Mesa.

house sold for 1.275 mil in September of 2007 - down to 540K now.

billywatson 02-27-2011 12:41 AM

Listen to Blacks on Blondes...it's Mormons.

Or Mexicans.

Depending on what part you're in.

Tempe is more fun, especially near the University.

Mesa is a nice city, it is an old town and better than Phoenix in my opinion when it comes to homes, cleanliness and crime.

Tempe would be my first choice over Mesa

Doesn't FTV Girls operate out of there

As long as it's not completely in the ghetto that is one hell of a deal.

FTV is located in Phoenix.....I believe it may be the PV area :winkwink:

I have never lived in the Phoenix area. It is too busy for me, traffic gets insane up there.

If you are looking for something a little more relaxed might want to check into the Tucson area.

:2 cents:

My parents used to winter in Mesa every year, they always had good things to say about it.

But they were in one of those huge parks where all the snowbirds hang out, so only limited contact with locals.

As I recall they loved tempe though, did much shopping there.

Me, I've never been.

Been living out here for the past 8 years, nice to see other people on here from AZ as well.

I'm no expert, but I agree, Mesa is more Mormons. The tempe area is fun, near the University. Lots of college kids, the closer you get to the university. Scottsdale is nice as well, the rich area, more high class, and then there's phoenix, which has its good and bad areas.

I stay in Tempe, would like to network with anyone that is from out here.

Lived in mesa

my advice..stay clear..lot of gangs..crime..illegals..etc etc..

if you are set on AZ go with tempe....or even scottsdale if you want a little more laid back atmosphere :2 cents:

C-Luv 02-27-2011 03:16 PM

I wouldn't choose Mesa as place to buy a home. Your home value will not go up as much as if you bought in Tempe, Scottsdale or Gilbert. Also depending on what part of Mesa you live it can be a little more run down, heavy on Mormons, snowbirds and Mexicans. East Mesa is Okay but then you are far from the city and Scottsdale...

C-Luv 02-27-2011 03:24 PM

Googled the address, location is not bad. Your off the 202 and Val Vista. Close to Scottsdale and Tempe. Only problem is your are located next to a bunch of Mormons. Don't tell anybody what you do!

Right on. Phoenix sucks. Tucson's where it's at.

Kevin Marx 02-27-2011 03:40 PM

LOL. I love everything I am reading. Mesa is just fine. Yes there are Mormons, but there's everything else too.

Mesa is the 2nd largest city in AZ. Like 750k people. There are good parts and bad parts to it, just like in Tempe, Scottsdale, Gilbert, etc. (there's some really shitty parts to Scottsdale. I wouldn't want to live in those areas... but yes, they are Scottsdale).

You will get a very good value for the price in Mesa, but the overshadowing culture is very much a family city (the Mormons are big on families). That means the housing is more focused on that type of thing. Just something to think about when purchasing.

In reference to the gangs, I wouldn't say I fear gang activity here in Mesa at all. Perhaps in some parts sure, but PHX would scare the shit out of me more than Mesa.

these 3 homes in Scottsale or Paradise Valley would be 900K and up - in Mesa 550K

search Tempe on Zillow - nothing nice there in the 5-600K range

All of Arizona is METH head central.

MESA = Valley of the SPUN

BSleazy 02-27-2011 07:10 PM

Can't imagine living in the middle of a desert.

mineistaken 02-27-2011 07:21 PM

Maybe OP is mormon ghimself, looking at those houses built for like 10 family members :)

xNetworx 02-27-2011 07:34 PM

You couldn't pay me to live in 95% of Mesa. If you do adult, forget it.

Why? Its not like people must advertise that they do adult.

Jim_Gunn 02-27-2011 07:49 PM

I've only been to Tempe for the Phoenix Forum and quite like it. If I had to move to AZ I would look there. Nice city near Phoenix, college town, lots of hot chicks. Not too sure I would even bother looking elsewhere.

I should say, If you are producing adult content there.

sexdatesj 02-27-2011 09:51 PM

Look towards Buckeye, Surprise, Waddell.. east valley.. much nicer. Even Litchfield Park.

INever 02-27-2011 11:29 PM

I'd rather live further in like Camelback and Scottsdale, or downtown Phx. Or further out closer to the mountains. :2 cents:

lazycash 02-28-2011 05:31 AM

I agree with most in this thread, avoid Mesa. The area you are looking is a newer exclusive area, but its by far the exception in Mesa. As far as bang for you buck in the price range you are looking, I would look in the south Chandler area. The area is mainly newer housing, lots of shopping, restaurants ect... nearby and some exceptional values on foreclosures and short sales now if you're willing to move quick when they become available.

A friend of ours just purchased a 8 bedroom 7500 sq ft home in Anthem for around 260K. When the home was built it sold for 450K. There are allot of good deals out there and theirs' was a good example.

For me, I grew up in scottsdale and would not live there if I had a choice, but that is just me. PV is very expensive and clicky like scottsdale or even worse.

And like Kevin said, there is good and bad with each city. Good luck with your search.

How's the crime in Tempe?

Jon Oso 02-28-2011 07:51 AM

All I've seen of Mesa has been pretty ghetto, a lot of older buildings and houses and a lot of lower income neighborhoods. I live in the "shitty" part of Scottsdale and have had zero problems - then again I live a half mile from a Police Crime Lab so that probably helps.

I'd check out Chandler or Gilbert if you're not looking to be super close to Phoenix. South Scottsdale has some nice areas that aren't retarded with pricing. Tempe also has some nice older houses that can be picked up pretty cheap as well.

its way quiet since sb1070

Kimmykim 02-28-2011 12:50 PM

My favorite place in Phoenix that I lived was Arcadia/Biltmore == not brand new, but great values, super location, and lots of character that you don't get in the 'milk' colored neighborhoods where every 5th house is the same.

PV was expensive and inconvenient, N Scottsdale was far from everything unless you intended to never leave home. Old Scottsdale wasn't bad. I have friends that live in a few other parts of town and they seem to like it.
