Bank Error in Your Favor

So I'm at the ATM yesterday and I slide my card in and request $100. The machine starts spitting out $20's really fast. I look at the huge stack and think that I made a mistake entering, but no I entered $100.

All in all the machine gave me $540.

I personally have no problem keeping a bit of a huge banks profits considering all the fees they've charged me - would you keep it?

Chris 03-01-2011 01:10 PM

like 5 or so years ago there was this guy trying to setup an atm network that would give an extra 20 out randomly as a prize of sorts

Double check your bank statement to make sure they didnt charge you for that error heh

L-Pink 03-01-2011 01:10 PM

Sure keep it. I'm positive you aren't on video.

They will figure out who got the $ most likely and tag your account with the full amount.

Jman 03-01-2011 01:15 PM

You'll be deducted accordingly don't worry. We are talking about a Bank here. They do not give away money...

Abbie 03-01-2011 01:16 PM

I know in my state that knowingly doing so can result in you being charged with a crime. To be safe, I'd let the bank know.

pornguy 03-01-2011 01:20 PM

they will catch the mistake.

96ukssob 03-01-2011 01:20 PM

Put it this way... you pay for their technology to be accurate, so their failure is your gain :2 cents:

Years ago I was at an ATM and was withdrawing something like $300 or so. The ATM spit out $220 then froze and said there was an error. I took a picture with my phone and even the amount of money I had. Call BofA and they said they would investigate. I get a letter in the mail a few weeks later saying "here is a receipt from your withdraw for $300"

Id take any chance I have to get their money now :2 cents:

The receipts at the ATM are going to be off. They're going to review the receipts and the video footage, and they're going to correct it on your account.

That happened to me about 10 years ago, different bank. They reviewed everything and I got my money back. Sounds like your bank sucks.

C H R I S 03-01-2011 01:32 PM

Already posted to my account at $100. I'll check back in a week and maybe in a month and let you know if I got hit for the total.

cooldude7 03-01-2011 01:34 PM

evrything is logged, they will deduct remaining money from ur account,
my friend works on database server connected to atm's

Chris 03-01-2011 01:35 PM

Once at walmart in the middle of no where while on a road trip i stopped to get cash out of the atm. It was a walmart atm so they controlled it i guess . anyways .. it ran out of money and i was taking out 300

So it says Error please see attendant.

I see an employee and they get a manager .. the manager came out and said how much ddi you request

told her 300 ... she asked how much did I get ..I told her how much i had and she just opened the box and gave me the rest of my request

She did nothing to verify how much i really got - i think i could of said it only gave me 20 lol

PR_Glen 03-01-2011 01:38 PM

how the hell can video tell how much you got? it is so shitty and grainy that would never hold up in court...

the machine will tell them the amount dispensed though.

k0nr4d 03-01-2011 01:47 PM

Keep the receipt saying you withdrew 100, and if anythign claim you didn't count the money. You regularly carry around $2-3k and don't notice a few extra hundred.

lazycash 03-01-2011 01:52 PM

Was it after 4pm? If so, the $100 will post on your account as a pending transaction, but during overnight processing tonight it will rectify the mistake and adjust your account accordingly. If it was before 4pm and the overnight processing was last night and its showing a final posted transaction of $100, then you may indeed have gotten away with it.

thread sent to the local police station in LA.

cheers :pimp

i kid i kid.. i enjoy the money man

Kiopa_Matt 03-01-2011 01:58 PM

Must have upgraded the technology since, but I remember years ago I'd pull out say $100, and end up with $120. Only happened when they were brand new, crisp bills though, so they got stuck together as one.

depends how ATMs are setup, if it logged that it gave out only $100 and proper amounts in other transactions, how will bank determine which account to go after?

Ross 03-01-2011 02:12 PM

The machine will balance eventually and you'll get the amount deducted from your account. Happened to me a few years ago, we were out drunk and I got 100 pounds out after the bar to hit the strip club, it gave me 200 and of course I spent it.. couple days later I see CORRECTION on my statement, they tapped the extra funds from my account.

That's a good idea.

I had something similar happen to me and it's not until they balance the ATM the next day. They will notice it's down by $300, not sure if they can track it to your transaction though.

Seth Manson 03-01-2011 02:33 PM

This is a moral issue.

Do you have any morals?

MrBottomTooth 03-01-2011 02:36 PM

I think people in here might be overestimating the ability for the bank to find out where the money went.

I went into the actual branch and took some cash out from the teller and they overpaid me by $400. They had no idea where the money went, even though there are cameras inside the branch.

They would have never figured out where the cash went if I hadn't brought it back. They gave me a few hundred Air Miles as a thank you for being honest. (oh joy, air miles):disgust

I was also friends at the time time with commerical bank manager there and he told me they wouldn't have been able to tell where the cash went. He said the teller that was out probably would have been fired.

brassmonkey 03-01-2011 02:45 PM

you will wake up soon with a negative $540 they don't play that game.

Tom_PM 03-01-2011 02:51 PM

Go to the bank manager with $440 in 20's and the universe will reward you.

atom 03-01-2011 02:52 PM

I used to work in the atm integration department of a large bank. This happens more often then you think and believe me they will figure it out. The machines must balance when new hoppers of cash are added, if they dont, they go through all transactions line by line.

atom 03-01-2011 02:54 PM

on another note, if you were to ever knock over an atm machine, I suggest casino's. Most casino cash machines have 500k-750k in cash and are refilled 3-4 times a week.

Bank Error in Your Favor

This rarely ever happens. It is reasonable to keep the money. This is the way businesses do accounting nowadays if there is a mistake:

1) Error in Your Favor - don't contact them AKA it's their duty to contact you
2) Error not in Your Favor - contact them

ottopottomouse 03-01-2011 03:08 PM

When the ATM at the nearest bank to me started spitting out 20s instead of 10s there ended up being a queue of people there ready to empty it.

That's crazy.

qwe 03-01-2011 03:09 PM

nothing to do with morals here, bank fucks you over every time so why not fuck them back

MetaMan 03-01-2011 03:14 PM

Send it to me and i will spend it for you. this way you have nothing to feel bad about. :thumbsup

Alot of them send you to the cage to get your $$ too. :2 cents:

C H R I S 03-01-2011 03:22 PM

I have no problem if they find the error and hit me for it. Although the majority thinks this will happen I kinda doubt it. Although this is my bank I was using another institutions card - I can't see them hitting the card again if it's not present.

I could be wrong.

I'm curious all these people saying the bank will catch it- would you return the money or wait for them to catch the error - I have a feeling 90% would keep it and see if they catch the error...

czarina 03-01-2011 03:28 PM

keep it. If they say something or take the money out of your account, oh well. Otherwise, consider it a bonus payment ;)

Obviously different amounts of money... but you'd never win in court... if it went that far.

papill0n 03-01-2011 11:44 PM

huge bank error here yesterday

cash machines were literally spitting out thousands of dollars of cash all across the state

Sausage 03-01-2011 11:47 PM

Yeah sounds like the Australian one yesterday. Police have already said that they will prosecute anyone who doesn't give it back.

blonda80 03-02-2011 12:09 AM

The only error that I got to an ATM in here, 2 years ago I think, was when I asked 1200 and it only gave me 1000. I was so pissed off :(
I didn`t went to the bank to argue with the idiots but I never used that ATM machine or bank again.
But this is Romania :) Shit happens.

I don`t think I would keep the money in your place. I never take what isn`t mine because I have tons of bad luck and usually I lose 3 times more than I "win"

CYF 03-02-2011 12:16 AM

50 extra bills
