I saw this question asked at a FB feed. Interesting question. You'd think people would be quick to whip out the NECESSITY argument--specially in THIS case (nuclear meltdown, thousands of people stranded, food stocks wiped out, etc).

I would guess that the reason for no looting in Japan is because there is sense of "unity" among the people more than in other countries, like the USA. Furthermore, Japan is mostly homogeneous society

In the US, there is a sense of "disenfranchisement" or an "us versus them" mentality. It can be black v white, mexican v. white, poor v. rich, etc etc. So it is easier to start looting when a person feels that it is time to "get mine".

One thing about the Japanese is that they have pride in their homeland. They feel that anything that affects the country affects them and vice versa. Unlike the U.S. where every man, woman, and child are out for themselves first, in Japan it's country first...everything else second. The Japanese, and Asians as a whole, have an honor code that westerners couldn't even start to grasp.

Other than Muslims, which are just fucking outright brainwashed, the Japanese are willing to sacrafice their own lives for their country. And it's not sacrificing as in "you may die if you go to war" but as in "dive your plane into this carrier, you're going to die" type of sacrificing.

I think it is more a case of "individualism" than greed/capitalism.

Because Japan is as mush a Capitalistic nation as the USA. But the difference is the sense of individualism.

People in the US view themselves on a different level compared to their own country/government. Maybe in Japan, the people view themselves in unison with their country/government.

No. It is 100% greed. It knows no racial barriers. It is the society we live in over here. Black, White, Mexican, it doesn't matter. We all have the same outlook on things in the west, that success is gauged by personal acquisition of material goods. Don't believe it? Usually, you only see shoplifting by foreigners in Japan, especially the Africans from what my friends tell me.

They keep Japan for Japanese people so there is a strong sense of community. Crazy concept huh? Japanese people are A+ in my book.

This is the reason. From when the Japanese are born, conformity is the only game in town. Tall poppy syndrome. Nobody wants to be different. The other factor is that prison in Japan is not designed around ideas of rehabilitation, as in the West, ie make peeps fit for society again. No, there prison is built around "punishment". There are no organisations looking after the rights of prisoners. And you will suffer horribly. Though fear keeps the prols from looting, the real theft takes place during re-building, when the monster that is corruption drives up the price of everything to the benefit those who weld any form of power (in this, America has a deep understanding based on it's own experiences).
When there, yes, how kind and meek and wonderful are all the people you come into contact with. But, believe me, they really don't like you! (For a start, as a Westerner, you have an awful body odor for their sensitive oriental nostrils). All those stories of wallets returned after being found in Tokyo metro are true....but they always miss out the bit that you must reward the finder with something equal to the contents. I would be willing to bet that my knowledge of Japanese history is just as good as yours........ I would guess our disagreement lies in us having different ideas about constitutes "honor" and "respect".

Well, if history is any guide, it MIGHT be a dualistic moral code--one set of expected conduct at home and one in China or, if you're looking for some sad examples of colonial abuse, Korea.
