do adult links affect seo?

One of my main stream sites was 2nd listed on a google for a certain term. Then after adding a banner linking to a porn network, but not showing any nudity in the banners, I seem to have lost the 2nd place position.

Are these two events related, or just coincidence?

Its not a coincidence... I experienced it alot with google.. Your outbond links plays a big role when you consider google... For example :
Google don't like websites with adult outbound links in top results.
Same is the case with affiliate links..
