Glenn Beck 'to transition off' Fox News

Network axes Tea Party icon's daily slot amid mounting controversies and exodus of advertisers

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/...n-Beck-007.jpg

Sagging ratings, a string of damaging remarks and an exodus of advertisers have combined to end Glenn Beck's controversial tenure on US cable network Fox News.

The news follows weeks of speculation about Beck's future, as a campaign to pressure advertisers to boycott the pundit's daily 5pm slot gathered pace, while Beck himself was embroiled in battles erupting from his often rococo conspiracy theories involving the likes of George Soros and Barack Obama.

An elliptical statement by Beck's production company and Fox News said: "Glenn intends to transition off of his daily programme, the third highest rated in all of cable news, later this year."

But the statement also put a face-saving spin on the decision to end Beck's show, quoting Fox News's chief executive Roger Ailes: "Glenn Beck is a powerful communicator, a creative entrepreneur and a true success by anybody's standards. I look forward to continuing to work with him."

The joint statement mentioned unnamed future "television projects for air on the Fox News Channel as well as content for other platforms", without giving any detail. Beck himself wasn't burning any bridges, saying in his statement: "I truly believe that America owes a lot to Roger Ailes and Fox News."

The Glenn Beck show has been broadcast each weekday on Fox News since December 2009, when Beck moved to the network after an ill-fated show on CNN's Headline News channel. His current contract was due to expire in December this year. The announcement was greeted with joy among Beck's phalanx of critics on the left.

David Brock of Media Matters for America, one of Beck's most vociferous critics, said: "After losing more than 300 advertisers and seeing more than a million viewers abandon his show, the only surprise is that it took Fox News months to reach this decision."

The StopBeck campaign, designed to lobby corporations against advertising on Beck's show, welcomed the news with a simple Twitter posting: "VICTORY!"

The show's peak of popularity coincided with the rise of the Tea Party, and his trademark blend of paranoia and conspiracy attracting a wide following ? and an equally wide circle of criticism, thanks to often bizarre statements.

Beck's string of eyebrow-raising claims on air includes his 2009 description of Obama as "a guy who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture... This guy is, I believe, a racist."

More recently, Beck held a two-day "investigation" into George Soros, who funds a variety of liberal causes in the US. Beck's denunciation included reference to Soros's wartime childhood in Hungary, with Beck claiming: "Here's a Jewish boy helping send the Jews to the death camps." Beck's remarks were decried as "monstrous" by Jewish groups.

Beck's audience has shrunk from a peak of around 2.9 million viewers at the start of 2010 to less than 1.8m, according to recent ratings. On Fox that left Beck lagging far behind the channel's primetime stars, Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity.

As the audience dried up, so did the advertising. The list of high profile advertisers avoiding his show has grown, and now includes household names such as Coca-Cola, American Express, AT&T and Nestlé. In the UK, where Beck's show is carried by the Fox News international channel, advertisers are so scarce that the network fills the ad breaks with silent Sky News updates.

One of my good friends thinks Beck hung the moon. He agrees that Beck is a drama queen but he thinks Becks message is strong. My friend has become more like Beck over the last few years. He's constantly spewing negative shit, constantly making things more dramatic than they need to be and he's constantly bitching about Obama. Sometimes when he calls - I don't even answer the phone. A person can only take so much of that shit :1orglaugh

2MuchMark 04-06-2011 05:46 PM

Oh well. I'll miss the crazy old bastard.

Has Beck mentioned it on the show at all? Curious to see what he is saying about it.

LAJ 04-06-2011 06:39 PM

Hopefully for his grand finale he'll take a nose dive off the building.

GatorB 04-06-2011 06:42 PM

Better keep an eye out for a 12clicks, The Demon, Vendzilla and stickyfingerz suicide pact.

Bill8 04-06-2011 06:44 PM

i'm sure it's all Soros's fault.

I can just hear the right ranting.

Fox will replace him with someone worse, having learned not to let their attack dog have too much chain.

mynameisjim 04-06-2011 06:48 PM

It's slow, but I think people are starting realize a lot of this extreme right wing garbage is nothing but entertainment and the people behind it like Beck don't believe any of it themselves. In the last few years a lot of "noobs" got into politics and of course they gravitated to the best showmen. But I think they are realizing it's all a show.

His show might be ending but Glenn is not leaving Fox News...hes actually moving up the ladder to tackle Shine Media Group's expansion into the US market.

FOX NEWS AND MERCURY RADIO ARTS ANNOUNCE NEW AGREEMENT

(New York, NY) Fox News and Mercury Radio Arts, Glenn Beck?s production company, are proud to announce that they will work together to develop and produce a variety of television projects for air on the Fox News Channel as well as content for other platforms including Fox News? digital properties. Glenn intends to transition off of his daily program, the third highest rated in all of cable news, later this year.

Roger Ailes, Chairman and CEO of Fox News said, ?Glenn Beck is a powerful communicator, a creative entrepreneur and a true success by anybody?s standards. I look forward to continuing to work with him.?

Glenn Beck said: ?I truly believe that America owes a lot to Roger Ailes and Fox News. I cannot repay Roger for the lessons I?ve learned and will continue to learn from him and I look forward to starting this new phase of our partnership.?

Joel Cheatwood, SVP/Development at Fox News, will be joining Mercury Radio Arts effective April 24, 2011. Part of his role as EVP will be to manage the partnership and serve as a liaison with the Fox News Channel.

Roger Ailes said: ?Joel is a good friend and one of the most talented and creative executives in the business. Over the past four years I have consistently valued his input and advice and that will not stop as we work with him in his new role.?

?Glenn Beck? is consistently the third highest rated program on cable news. For the 27 months that ?Glenn Beck? has aired on Fox News, the program has averaged more than 2.2 million total viewers and 563,000 viewers 25-54 years old, numbers normally associated with shows airing in primetime, not at 5pm. ?Glenn Beck? has dominated all of its cable news competitors since launch.

candyflip 04-06-2011 08:14 PM

I've never watched a minute of this guy. What's his deal?

Agent 488 04-06-2011 08:16 PM

his show got too weird and boring, it had little to do with any victory from liberals.

and all beck is going to do is the odd special for fox. he's planning a big move into new media where the action is.

Sarah_Jayne 04-06-2011 09:36 PM

Ah...if only that was going to shut him up. Plus, it means we will get a new idiot in his slot.

I saw a short (about 2 minute) video he did about this. he basically said that he is like Paul Revere and that he never intended to do this forever that he got up on the horse, got the message out and is now going back to work doing his regular job (I assume he means his radio show).

He made no mention of the fact that his ratings have plummeted and advertisers left his show in droves and that many of the bosses at Fox were upset because he would spend so much time trying to get people to buy his shitty gold coins and survival food.

mynameisjim 04-07-2011 12:45 AM

The Fox press release about him climbing the ladder and "transitioning" is standard stuff so both sides can save face. Even in adult, when a rep is let go, both sides come on here and talk about new projects and new directions, and how great each other was...blah...blah..blah.

Bottom line is this is TV. And when a show is starting to become unprofitable, it gets canceled and the star's contracts are not renewed. That's what happened here.

DWB 04-07-2011 01:59 AM

As loony as he may be sometimes, he doesn't have the 3rd highest rated show on cable TV for nothing. Bat shit crazy, probably. Stupid, no.

I wouldn't underestimate this guy. Putting him behind the scenes may allow him to produce more shows and get his message of doom out to even more people, through other channels. Killing him off may only make him stronger. Or maybe he'll go the way of Howard Stern.

BlackCrayon 04-07-2011 04:49 AM

Hes getting ready to ramp up the propaganda machine with fox for the upcoming election no doubt.

Failed 04-07-2011 05:14 AM

Beck exercised his right to free speech, however hate filled and stupid that speech was. I was just hoping for the day one of his viewers got up close and personal and showed him what the right to bear arms could potentially lead to...oh well.

PR_Glen 04-07-2011 05:58 AM

i'm just glad this wasn't another thread about me.. haha

Sticky is gone .....

but you can replace with Gouge ... ( as you can see his post above ).

sperbonzo 04-07-2011 06:49 AM

Funny that they start with "Sagging ratings" in the first sentence, but then point out the it is the third highest rated show in all of cable news.... His ratings are far higher than ANY show on CNN, MSNBC, or HLN, and THIS constitutes "sagging ratings"?

In that case why isn't every show on CNN, MSNBC, and HLN canceled?

.

I just did some research, and you're right. He is making 30 million from radio, and other media projects, and only 2 million from the show. Fair enough.

SO let me get this straight, you guys that are happy about this, that their 3rd highest rated show is being censored due to pressure from one group to stop advertisers?

You guys applaud this? Are you fucking insane? This is censorship, plain and simple, GO FUCK YOURSELF!

If no advertisers are willing to spend money during his show, why in the world would anyone keep the show on the air? This isn't censorship, it's business 101.

Glenn Beck is like tube traffic. Massive but not worth a shit.

Advertisers that are being pressured by one group, how would you like them to go after your website next? Your billing company, Your bank?

Applauding censorship is what you're doing

Not all states have sales tax, like Oregon is a great place to buy big ticket items, California is not

PornoMonster 04-07-2011 08:50 AM

Ven,
Yeah I know, was a quick reply thing.
Just like the amount of people that get big ticket items registered in states without property taxes.

On Fox with a 5pm time slot and all the hype, not bad but not great either....

That MoFo spewed garbage and advertisers are not bound to pay for that.
Tell that MoFo to go to PBS and talk.
