The Most Dangerous Thing You'll Do All Day
We stand around a lot here at Men?s Health. In fact, a few of us don?t even have office chairs. Instead, we write, edit, and answer e-mails?a lot of e-mails?while standing in front of our computers. All day long. Why?
It all started last summer, when Assistant Editor Maria Masters came across a shocking study in the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (one of dozens of research journals we comb each month as we put together the magazine). Scientists at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana analyzed the lifestyles of more than 17,000 men and women over about 13 years, and found that people who sit for most of the day are 54 percent more likely to die of heart attacks. That?s right?I said 54 percent! Complete Story here |
soooooo, i should stand up while working?
|
i wonder if sitting on one of those balls 'active sitting' would result in the same problems.
|
I guess 1/2 of us are fucked
|
good god what bullshit science..
ok lets try some simple math without numbers... Picture a number in your head of how many people in north america alone who, not only have a desk job, but a job that would require sitting all day for a full days work. This would include truck drivers, machine operators and anyone else who sits for extended periods of time. Now don't you think there would be a gross epidemic of people dying from heart attacks on this continent if that were the case? Especially in the last 60 years because I haven't seen numbers or news reports of that anywhere... ps. we're not horses, humans were meant to walk, run, sit and lay down... act accordingly. |
lol.... get moving. Its fucked that the study took into account seperate exercise smoking etc... all goes back to sitting.
See ya chair. |
This is just bad news all over.
|
No shit, people who sit all day don't get any exercise and die of heart attacks.
Wow, glad a study was done to prove that. |
ya i saw some of the programmers at Google use standing desks too. i like the idea, i just dont think i could stand while trying to program for 5-10 hours a day.
if all u do is support, phone calls, emails, etc, then its probably easier so u can do other things while "working". but if u have to concentrate for hours at a time - i dunno. maybe i need 2 desks. . |
What if you complement the rest of your day with a nice dosage of physical activity?
