Got my "new" keyboard in the mail today

A 1993 NEC clicky keyboard.

I think it's brand new - the keys have NO wear on them, the rubber feet on the back are not even scratched and the cord is not stretched. The plastic is not discolored at all.

$39 on ebay - What a deal to a keyboard-o-phile like me!

You can see my old keyboard in the background. I've calculated that I've typed at least 1,000,000 keystrokes on that thing.

I use whatpulse.org to track my keystrokes

Weird I was just thinking about this the other day. Back in like 2000 or so they had something called "Project Dolphin" which did the same thing, teams would compete or what-not. I have always typed so fucking much. Wish I had had this thing running since 05 so I could see my stats. I think ima signup.

What is it? I need a new keyboard, preferably one with back lit keys and no noise.

Overload 04-14-2011 05:06 PM

lol, i am still using my very first keyboard ... it has taken a lot of punishment and still works like a charm ... i washed it dozens of times and played pinball hrs upon hrs ... newer ones cant take a punch and dont survive for long (thats why i always have two or more to cycle - when my oldie is dirty enuff for a washing i use a new one while the old one dries ;)

Zorgman 04-14-2011 05:09 PM

Chaze, it's a Apple keyboard

Loving this razer black widow mechanical.

I actually bought one of those but took it back. I loved the key action, but the stylized letters and the fact that the f1-f8 keys were not in the same place bothered me - I wa always hitting the wrong f key since I never looked at them.

I did love the illuminated thing though. maybe I could illuminate this new keyboard...hmmm....

I actually installed a ps2 card:

http://www.adeltek.com/images/products/SD-LP-UPS2-1.jpg

The ps2/USB adapters didnt have enough power to power the old keyboard and it would constantly power-down. remember the old keyboards have little cpu's in them to communicate with the main computer.

I don't like the letters but unless I am coding I don't look at the keys much. I hate how the shift characters are gray and are below the normal characters. That fucks me up when I code sometimes but I am getting used to it.

Working on getting a Das Keyboard. Those are badass but they backordered from my normal parts place so I have to wait. Does the seller you got your KB from have lots of them? If so, mind sharing?

John-ACWM 04-15-2011 09:08 AM

Nice, enjoy it :)

fatfoo 04-15-2011 09:11 AM

Congratulations on getting a keyboard that is in good condition. The white and gray colors of the keyboard are pleasant.

I purchased a Das Keyboard a few years ago but sent it back. The keys were really really hard to presss and required strength. After 2 hours of typing my finger muscles were actually sore. After a day my hands felt like I had gone to the gym and were all tight and cramped.

This is why I jumped on the NEC keyboard - clicky but very light touch.

The seller had only one of them. But the model number was NEC APC-H412 if you want to look again on ebay. The APC-H412 is the really light touch keyboard that I like.

Tom_PM 04-15-2011 11:42 AM

Those keyboards really made you feel like you were launching rockets when you typed. ShtunkCLICKwooshhhhh

Well ok, not that much.. but close dammit.

chaze 04-15-2011 09:38 PM

Yeah, you have to watch which switches you get. The first ones didn't use the cherry mx blue switches like the razer black widow and most others do these days.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for one of those NECs. I'd love to have one of those or the original IBM model M.

Jeremiasz 04-16-2011 06:58 PM

clicky keyboards were the best :) i had one in 1994 :)
