Didn't realise retired people could survive on no food.

AdultKing 04-18-2011 05:38 AM

You could add Phnom Phen to that list.

And even Sihanoukville :)

Sid70 04-18-2011 05:50 AM

I would exclude France tho, other stuff is nearly possible.

MaDalton 04-18-2011 05:51 AM

after 2 weeks in thailand i doubt i could survive on $500 a month here.

ilnjscb 04-18-2011 05:56 AM

Every last one of those places is dangerous for an american retiree, including sur de france. And $500 on rent? Fuck that - you can get that in Florida, especially right now.

Chosen 04-18-2011 05:58 AM

Interesting article, but I'm sure I could write much more about budget accomodation is S & SE Asia...

Hookers are expensive eh?

amateurbfs 04-18-2011 06:03 AM

There are plenty of places in the world where people don't need much money to live, but you know the difference between those people and you? They're from there! It's never cheap for an expat all the time, no matter where they live or how they do things.

They missed "your girlfriends house". Some girlfriends even pay to have you stay there!

Care to write down your expenses average here?

1. First night 3 some - $500
2. ...

Please, do continue :)

Nicky 04-18-2011 06:04 AM

I'd rather add another 0 to that retirement budget.

Caligari 04-18-2011 06:10 AM

man that is a crap article, in the first place they are only talking about rent so paying 700 bucks a month for an apartment in Medellin is stupid. Medellin is a nice place but not 700 bucks a month nice, and it pays to know that its still cocaine capital number one in south america with occasional govt-farc fighting around the area which closes down roads etc.

Hey live in Nicaragua and we'll even throw in a government coup or 2;)

v4 media 04-18-2011 06:10 AM

Languedoc-Roussillon, France is beautiful, $500 a month is probably just doable if you live in a village and eat local/seasonal with food from your veggie patch and the local wine out the barrel.

CaptainHowdy 04-18-2011 06:12 AM

That place is on HGTV, House Hunters International, quite a bit. People buying vacation homes there. I am amazed so many want to live full time in that climate. I could not handle the bugs, much less the heat.
:2 cents:

Yes, you can retire with $500/month in these countries if:

1- You only need to eat instant noodles for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
2- You love to live alone.
3- You are impotent and/or have no desire to fuck local girls, boys or ladyboys.
4- You don't need air conditioning in tropical countries (or heating in France).
5- You moderately drink cheap local alcoholic beverages.

:(:(:(

PR_Glen 04-18-2011 06:53 AM

i'd like to retire in France for at least a part of the year down the road some time.

mavruda 04-18-2011 07:00 AM

Guys... you forgot the internet to watch porn. It cost some money too.
What a guy may need ? Food to eat, water to drink and internet to have any sexual life.

Paul Markham 04-18-2011 07:08 AM

Add Brno Czech Republic. If you believe the idiots here. :1orglaugh

Actually there are people here who do live on very little a month, as you said they're used to it and live with their Mum or have to send their wife out to work. :thumbsup

zaggy 04-18-2011 07:40 AM

I actually read the article, and it's talking about $500 per month of rent, not in total. "Here are five places where you could rent for as little as $500 per month." You can get a lot for $500 per month in most of the developing world.

I was able to go to Thailand Bankkok and Chang Mai) with my girlfriend for 3 week on vacation...we didnt even spend $1000 between the two of us! That included food, cheap hotels, and shopping.

grumpy 04-18-2011 07:56 AM

isnt 15% of the population of the usa already doing that?

Rochard 04-18-2011 07:59 AM

I remember when we used to go down to Mexico there was a group of retired peeps from the US living there. They made a trip back to the US once a month or so to get their checks, and otherwise just chilled on the beach.

cooldude7 04-18-2011 07:59 AM

is adult legal there ?
and have high speed net ?

I know of a single American man who lives in Chiang Mai on $200 a month, with half that going for rent. He gets around on a bicycle and eats at low-cost noodle stalls or for free when a temple offers lunch.
Yeah, that's my idea of a good retirement. Living in some roach and ant infested, 40 year old room with no air conditioning, and looking for handouts from the local Buddhists at the temple. Talk about living the high life!

$500 = 15,000 baht. I guess you could live in Thailand off that, but I wouldn't recommend it. Just our basic, monthly bills (rent, electric, internet, etc.) are about 11,000/month. We spend about 80,000/month ourselves, and our life is fine, but nothing glamorous. Then again, there is 8 of us living here.

james_clickmemedia 04-18-2011 08:20 AM

The top three countries are not exactly safe places.

Las Tablas Panama? Sorry, but you have that wrong. Panama is pretty damn safe. You have less chance of being beaten and robbed in Las Tablas then you do in London, that's for sure.

$500 is just for rent... and I doubt you stayed in "regular" places... Since you most likely stayed in what could be considered as the Acapulco of Thailand, you paid tourist prices, not ex-patriot prices for everything you ate, did and slept in.

Django 04-18-2011 03:08 PM

Languedoc-Roussillon, France: Mission impossible. :1orglaugh

abshard 04-18-2011 03:08 PM

i have already checked out "non-vacational" prices for rent etc., if the $500 is only for a place to stay then you can rent some nice apartments for that price. if thats for things like food, internet etc as well then i dont see that.

Pornopat 04-19-2011 02:23 AM

France is impossible.
She writes a 400 to 600 euro rent is realistic.
This may be but with a 500$ budget you have a problem on the rent alone.

GatorB 04-19-2011 02:29 AM

$500 a month rent where I live gets you a decent place.

chaze 04-19-2011 02:31 AM

It's all about lifestyle, it's amazing how cheap you can live anywhere if the rent is cheap.

The villages of Languedoc-Roussillon, France are empty, you can rent a small village house there for less than 200 euros a month. you can buy them for less than $25k

Also it's just above Cataluņa so not cold.
