Gadget gives cops quick access to cell phone data

The "Universal Forensic Extraction Device" sounds like the perfect cell phone snooping gadget.

Its maker, Israel-based Cellbrite, says it can copy all the content in a cell phone -- including contacts, text messages, call history, and pictures -- within a few minutes. Even deleted texts and other data can be restored by UFED 2.0, the latest version of the product, it says.
And it really is a universal tool. The firm says UFED works with 3,000 cell phone models, representing 95 percent of the handset market. Coming soon, the firm says on its website: "Additional major breakthroughs, including comprehensive iPhone physical solution; Android physical support ? allowing bypassing of user lock code, (Windows Phone) support, and much more." For good measure, UFEC can extract information from GPS units in most cars.

The gadget isn't a stalker's dream; it's an evidence-gathering tool for law enforcement. Cellbrite claims it?s already in use in 60 countries.

That apparently includes the U.S. The American Civil Liberties Union in Michigan says it has learned that state police there have purchased some of the gadgets. What is it doing with them? So far, Michigan authorities aren't telling. A public records request for information by the ACLU was met with a prohibitive $500,000 bill to cover the supposed cost of making the documents available.

"They did produce documents which confirmed that they have them," said Mark Fancher, a staff attorney at the ACLU office. "We have no idea what they are doing with them."
Technology and the Fourth Amendment have had a rocky relationship. When The Founding Fathers created protections against unlimited search and seizure, they never imagined the kind of tools that would be available to 21st century police officers.

For some reason that made me laugh.

Totally lol, it is just hilarious when the government blatantly says obviously ridiculous statements like that. Like "Hey we dont want you know what we are doing with it"

Michigan is a failed state. Glad I don't live there.

Time to act now people! Stand up or we will all face the wrath of whats coming

Wait until companies start requiring you to plug your phone into one, sort of like a drug test, before they hire you, and then randomly. :)

Frank21 04-20-2011 06:24 PM

Too bad this article isnt mentioning that all phones made after 2001 had the requirement to make this possible, and were build so that this device can extract all your date including passwords in seconds.
Guilty untill proven otherwise.
By the way they can do this wireless as well!

Ok enough with that BS. Anytime you are arrested even going back 200 years the cops thought you were guilty. Otherwise you wouldn't have been arrested in the first place. Now I don't agree that the cops should be able to use this without a warrent, but get off the "Guilty before innocent" crap.

what kind of police state is it when everyone volunteers to put every minute detail of their life online via facebook and other sites?

It's very hard to complain about big brother when you document your toilet habits on twitter etc

If you get pulled over and you have incriminating shit on your phone drop it in your big gulp immediately.

Just hide it in a safe place where the cops won't find it.

They could still get the info, it might burn up some of the electronics, but the cards would still probably work.
I could see popping out the sim card and memory card, but there is still the internal memory

Please research the subject before making emotional statements like this.
This is not something wich is be done only if you are arested, or terrorists or suspects of mass killings.
This is being done by the TSA on the airport, trainstations and random highway roadblocks.
And the police is now starting to use this by random checks and for example if you are pulled over for a speedticket.
As i said before they can do this wireless as well by driving next to you.

They can also with 1 push on a button dial your phonenumber without it goes over and listen whats up on your side of the phone without you ever knowing.

its all in the telecommunications act 1996 if you dont believe me.
http://www.fcc.gov/telecom.html

You can laugh now ok....
I will laugh when i see a thread of you or 1 of the other critical people in this thread. With a title similar as "the TSA gropped my 6 year old as a criminal and had to take adrugs test" or "now my buisness partner is mad at me after the cops called him and asked if he was aware of any CP on our servers".

And if you realy dont care about your privacy lets proof if by giving me all your contacts in your phone and your email password to start with.
