Because movie studios finally understood that they can make more money when they premiere film in foreign markets before the US. In the US they need to compete with the 20 or so movies coming out each week, in a foreign market they just need to compete with 2 or 3 local movies coming out that week.
That's only true for big budgets movies though, most of the others have to prove themselves in the US first before they get international distribution.

Getting movies early is one of the only things I miss about living in Costa Rica.

Just got back from watching it, pretty good movie, more spiderman than the dark knoght but all in all good fun, didn't stick through the credits though, what did i miss??
