where you pick up the phone and nobody says anything on the other end - they hang on for like 5 seconds with you going 'hello?' and then they hang up?

None. Cause I NEVER pick up the phone. Its goes to message service where I can hear the caler identify themselves.

i'm a Luddite - i specifically bought the most basic phone i could get and gave my fancy one away. i want one of those old black rotary dial ones made out of steel from the 1940's.

I used to get sale calls all the time, it was fun to fuck with them. But last year I thought why the hell have a land line, the only calls I got were BS stuff, so I got rid of it. Cell phone only now.

some how, some idiot has my fax number confused with a funeral home... 30+ page faxes at least once a week

it from a call center. sales or whatever. there is a gap between the connection usually. if you stay on it will eventually connect.

caller ID, google the number. most of those are places checking to see if the number is alive, expect spam phone calls shortly after

My phone rings maybe 3 times a week. Usually if I give out my number, its really the time & temperature.

Just got a new home phone for the first time in over 5 yrs. It happens at least 5 times per week. Probably some automated bill collection calls for the previous owner of that number.

That kind of call is a telemarketer, they're either checking if your # works or they're automated dialers waiting to see if its a voice mail or real person.

that's exactly what I thought they were - i get 3-5 a day - every morning just after 9 am i get one or two.

i worked at a call center in my youth. that's just autodialer. there is a gap between when you pick up and you can communicate.

Caller ID. I don't answer it 4 out of 5 times. And I wont answer it if the person is so fucking paranoid that they pay extra to have their name and/or number blocked from being displayed on caller ID. Don't want me to know who you are? Blow me.

Haven't had a call like that in years, since moving strictly to mobile/online numbers. In fact the only one I know who gets calls like that is my grandfather.

On the plus side for him it keeps him company, even the bogus calls. He gets called for every single political poll and think he's a Nielsen household too.

I get those calls every now and then but they usually hang up after I start with the heavy breathing...

i get 2-3 blank calls /day , i guess from phone company for due payments., but they take like 3-5 seconds to connect ., so i hang up :)

I love telemarketers.

I haven't had a land line since 2000 or so. I used to get those calls about a year ago, but they've stopped.
