Help Me Find The Cheapest Smallest Apartment In The World To Rent Or Buy

This is just research to see what's out there.

I have seen these 12x12 apartments going for 25k. Are there any cheaper. I haven't seen any of these for rent.

Rooms for rent do not count. I don't like living with other people unless the lease is in my name. In other words I have to be the one that makes the rules in a shared house.

mikesinner 05-08-2011 04:54 AM

Please no asshole comments either. I can earn fairly good money but I also have a very frugal nature. I'm just thinking of doing this for a few years while I go to school.

"In the World" is that literal or do you mean in the U.S.?

Those are too big. I mean something really small. I lived in a 285 Sq foot studio and it was way to big for me. I only stay indoors 4hrs/day except for sleeping.

You can get a nice, but small condo in Thailand for around 20k. Less for a townhouse and you get it a little out of town, prob around 17k for a 2 story / 2 bed bare bones. But those things can be made into some sweet pads.

I also have some friends on youtube that live in other Ohio cities that are always bemoaning their neighborhood. Not that I couldn't handle it.

Sure but at sub-$200/mo rentals you're not likely to be in the greatest thriving neighborhoods.

ya. I will have to research each place. I don't drive so cheap public transport is a must. I need to be less than two blocks from a bus stop.

I think nothing of walking/biking 3-4 miles to the store though.

camperjohn64 05-08-2011 06:10 AM

A friend of a friend gets free rent on the east cost by contacting owners of homes that are either empty or on foreclosure. His longest stay in the same place was about 18 months free.

His deal is that he basically says to the owner "I stay for free as long as I take care of the house, repair small items, cut the lawn etc, make it look attractive if you have an open house - and I leave on a moments notice".

Doesn't really sound like my sort of thing. I won't do lawn care unless I'm buying the property. I'm not really a fix it type of guy either. I'd rather have a small place that I can use a weed eater on or buy a riding lawnmower.

Sounds like a great idea though. If I'm ever in a spot I will get on the phone and try this.

mikesinner 05-08-2011 06:18 AM

I'm still looking for tiny places though. There has got to be a 12x12 for rent somewhere.

If you have cash I'd suggest you buy outright, then you never have to worry about rent.

Nathan 05-08-2011 07:24 AM

Just wondering.. is your goal to find the smallest apartment to rent, or is your goal to pay the least amount possible to rent whatever size it may be?

v4 media 05-08-2011 07:54 AM

Get a caravan, plot up in the desert.

Too big, too small, too far away from the city, too close to the city, too expensive, too cheap... you seem to be all over the place? I also think you are going about this completely backwards. Choose a place that you want to live, then find a cheap place to live in.

Some cities you can buy small houses for 10k, but again these are going to be cities that you don't want to live in.

Is there any websites you can suggest that sell condos like you're talking about? I'd like to see some listings. Thanks.

If you got $30k to spend, why not buy a nice second hand motorhome and a plot. or an old trailer and put it on a small piece of land somewhere.

You could probably buy a 12X12 shed aswell.

shade001 05-08-2011 10:49 AM

The problem with Mike is he doesn't know what he wants.

Personally, if I were single I would buy me a mountain cabin and become a hermit.

If you're looking for good public transportation you are better off at least being close to a big city. I'm pretty much on the road year round now and you'd be surprised how few towns in the US actually have public transportation. I was in a small town in New Mexico a few weeks ago and went out drinking, and I ended up being too drunk to comfortably drive home. I tried to call a cab and they didn't even have a cab service within 50 miles. A lot of these small towns either don't have bus service, or it is so limited it won't be too useful. You better do some serious research before you make a choice...

If they piss you off, just roll them away!

TubeSubmitters 05-08-2011 12:19 PM

How about you get some paid hosting first? cheapass

Kiopa_Matt 05-08-2011 12:21 PM

I know rooms for $40/month if you're looking. No air, probably lots of friends like ants, but it's cheap!

Or you can do like the villagers, get out into the jungle, start chopping, and build your own house for free.

no no no, small studios only. If you can find a small 1 room place for sale that's fine but no fixer uppers.

Both. I need small and cheap. I could actually live in a 12x12. I am very hardy. I like city life though. I couldn't do campground living.

mikesinner 05-08-2011 05:33 PM

One reason I don't want a large cheap place is that it will be falling apart and the heating bill will be outrageous.

IllTestYourGirls 05-08-2011 05:41 PM

Shit dude when I lived in Colorado you could rent a shit hole for $150 a month. Or a one bedroom for like 200.

IllTestYourGirls 05-08-2011 05:46 PM

Oh and you could buy a one bedroom condo for $20k ish

I lived in small places that weren't shit holes. They were just small. Some of them were in apartment complexes with huge outdoor swimming pools, fitness center, etc.

icymelon 05-08-2011 06:14 PM

All the websites are usually foreigners trying up the price so they can get paid on your deal, like any other real estate broker.

If you want the cheapest prices, you need to come over, get a car or a bike, and cruise around with someone who knows the area. There are cheap deals all over, but they are usually not officially listed somewhere.

This pic gives you the idea of the size of the cheap places. They are simple shells that can be made into something cooler, or you can just keep them simple. Some look like shit but some are done very well. Point is, if you are looking for BUDGET, this is the way to go in Thailand. Much cheaper than a condo and some of the styles (not this one) are modern.

This is considered "Thai style" and is pretty bare bones simple. That considred, you could probably get a place just like this in a quiet part of town (not Bangkok) for $15k - $30k. The closer to the city you are, the closer to $30k (or more) you will pay. They are generally 2 bedroom, 2 small bathrooms, living room, basic kitchen. Very basic.

http://www.thailand-property-for-sal...for_Sale_1.jpg

This one (depending on where it is) may run $20k - $50k.

http://www.movethailand.com/photo/ph...0-17-51-54.jpg

The trick is, hunting them down. Just like any real estate deal, you have to put in the time to find what you want at the price you're looking for. The good thing about Thailand is, the Thais are ALWAYS getting themselves into trouble with gambling or health issues, so deals are fairly easy to find if you are looking for them. I once missed out on a $160k property that some card player was letting go for $30k, because I couldn't get the money wired to her fast enough. She needed it within 24 hours. :1orglaugh

Condos are a lot more expensive and are geared towards foreigners. European style, gyms, pools, and security, but you pay for those extras. However, it's a lot nicer place.

Small 1 bedroom homes can also be picked up for around $30k - $35 in some areas.
