Move over, Netflix, Youtube is your newest competitor

Ruh Roh for Netflix :)

Google?s YouTube today announced plans to add around 3,000 movies for on-demand rental on its service, effectively declaring its intention to compete with Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. While YouTube has largely been known for quirky independent fare, the new content will include well-known flicks from major studios, including classics like Caddyshack and new releases like Inception and The King?s Speech.

finally, goodness!

Ugh, Google is ruthless in the ideas they steal from Apple. Apple hasn't announced it yet, but they will also be entering the online movie streaming business. I have no doubt that Eric Schmidt was made aware of that idea and Apple's intentions while he was an Apple board member. So first he stole the iPhone idea when Google created their ridiculous "Nexus One." Then they entered the mobile O/S market to compete with Apple's iOS. Now they're going to try distributing movies like Apple will be doing. Google is such bullshit. They're starting to remind me of Microsoft.

slavdogg 05-09-2011 05:01 PM

yeah but unlike all other markets
youtube.com already controls huge market share and the market itself for online videos

Makes sense for them to make this move though. I posted a report several months ago detailing how their YOUTUBE costs might be CLOSE TO FREE. They are just leveraging their existing hardware/network infrastructure

Google is going to get slammed with antitrust pretty soon. I read that the DOJ is already putting together a case?

It would be interesting to see their precise argument

Indeed, I agree that this move makes sense for Google. However, I also believe that if Eric Schmidt had not been an Apple board member, Google would not be making this move at this time. IMO, he is clearly trying to get a head start on Apple. Worst of all, he is using his insider knowledge of Apple as a means to try and outmaneuver them.

If that's true wouldn't that subject him to an Apple shareholder suit due to Conflict of Interest?

Jakez 05-09-2011 05:22 PM

Whoever puts Red box online first will take over, I'm not sure why Netflix doesn't have new DVD releases on there? Even if they're charged per view or require a more expensive membership.

Good luck.

Maybe they can talk to Microsoft on that one. Or maybe Intel. Either way, I doubt anything will come of it. Google has the money to go the distance and fight the government for decades if it sees fit.

No, I agree with you. Just saying I see it happening.

True dat.

I have a Sony GoogleTV which comes preloaded with NetFlix among some other shit. I enjoy being able to watch a lot of movies on demand. But it's library is lacking for the streaming selections.

I do watch a lot of porn/YT videos on my TV which is nice. I can also check my email and shit without having to bring a laptop into the room to check on shit. All in all, just an added level of convenience.

jigg 05-09-2011 06:10 PM

they're only competing with Netflix if they charge a monthly fee not a per-movie rental

kane 05-09-2011 06:14 PM

This looks like it is not much more than a PPV service with the exception that they also have a few titles for free. Until they have 10,000+ titles for free and unlimted rentals for around $10 per month I doubt they will be much of a threat to Netflix.

They use to have that. Then the movie companies got together and realized they could still make money from dvd sales and started holding back what they would allow netflix to release.

Also, with some of the studios Netflix agreed to wait 28 days when it comes to sending out new releases in exchange for getting access to more of that studio's library on streams. Supposedly Netflix clams that only about 30% of their customers even select new movies when they first come out, the rest choose things from rest of the library.

Supz 05-09-2011 06:43 PM

its to late.

Because this is such a new idea? They wanted to do it a long time ago but they were afraid of the trademark shit they had all over place.

Young 05-09-2011 07:09 PM

This move is way too late. Those who are willing to pay for premium content are already doing so with Netflix.

YouTube will forever be associated with short clips and silly videos - for me anyways. Even when I have a choice to view HD content on either Vimeo or YouTube I usually go with the Vimeo version.

This move is akin to K-Mart deciding that they were going to start selling $300 jeans for $300. Though they may have customers who can afford $300 jeans it's just not somewhere they would probably go for them.

Too little, too late.

Adam_M 05-09-2011 07:11 PM

would be great if they opened it up world wide!

bronco67 05-09-2011 07:16 PM

Great, just what we need. More bandwidth tied up by some mouth-breather in Kentucky watching every Steven Segal movie on his Wal-mart computer.

ThatOtherGuy - BANNED FOR LIFE 05-09-2011 07:47 PM

I wont be surprised if NETFLIX does not file a suit for unfair practices.

On another note Netflix has had on Demand viewing for years.

How so? It's on demand at $3 per movie. How is that any competition for Netflix which offers all you can eat for $8 a month? It's competiton for Itunes and Amazon not Netflix.

I'm not a lawyer, so I don't know. However, Eric Schmidt is a really smart guy, so I would imagine he did just enough to steal from Apple, but not actually break any laws. Here is another example of how Google is stealing from Apple.
