Google new downloadable music service = Dead on Arrival?

Word on the street is that Google will be launching an Amazon-like Music Service: http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/2011...sics-approval/

You?ve seen Amazon?s cloud music service. Now get ready for Google?s music service.

They?re going to look pretty similar.

Google is preparing to show off a new music service at tomorrow?s I/O conference. And like Amazon?s launch earlier this year, the company is doing it without the approval of the major music labels and publishers.

Google Music will roughly mirror what Amazon showed off in March: A service that loads copies of music that users already own into an Internet-based server, which lets them stream the songs over the Web and onto Android phones and tablets. The Wall Street Journal first reported on Google?s plans.
The big drawback?

Without the approval of major media publishers, this might die a painfully slow death. Remember Google's previous video venture? Exactly.

But why do they need approval of major media publishers. People just upload their own music (which they already 'own'), logging in goes trough your google account, so you can't share the music with other people. So it's just a service where users can upload their own mp3s so they can stream it from other devices.

And once millions of people use it, I'm sure the record companies will be very interested in placing ads, or options to buy new music etc.

that is true and probably where they are aiming.

for youtube's partnership program user-submitted amateur content just eclipsed pro content revenue wise recently.

Nothing illegal about storing your own personal music online.
