How Many Of You Guys Buy Blu Ray Movies

I have over 250 so far but I will be giving the away as prizes in my next WCG contests. Most are brand new other than being watched once, most of them still have the digital copy code unused.

This is the channel I'm going to use for this. I should have a camera by the end of June to start doing these. I also have about 75 PS3/360 games I will be giving out.
https://youtube.com/user/endthedisease

I notice on youtube that a lot of people buy them. Some people have massive collections. I want to find out how many of you buy them and why.

mikesinner 05-12-2011 02:27 AM

A lot of the titles I get I would normally not buy but if they have tons of extra stuff like 50 minutes of interviews I will pick it up if it's something I'm into.

The problem is most of these are special editions with two or more blu rays and will often be over $30 new. Most of these second disks are not available at redbox or on netflix.

I do have a netflix account but I have noticed that some movies just don't look as good as they do on blu ray. They claim that everything is streamed at 1080p but it's obviously not. I watched the new star trek movie and it looked amazing but I watched the sorcerers apprentice and it looked horrible even though it's a newer movie. I admit that netflix is the future but it will be many years before they get the streaming quality to an acceptable level.

Nope. I just download them and hook my laptop to the tv.

The Truth Hurts 05-12-2011 05:29 AM

i buy blu-rays. have 397 of them.
i buy dvds. have 2,984 of them.
still have 75 hd-dvds hanging around as well.

format i buy depends solely on the movie.

spazlabz 05-12-2011 05:39 AM

I buy a lot of them but only so I can view the videos in hi def. I dont much care about the special features

Spunky 05-12-2011 05:46 AM

I just rent them, watching them once is enough

Sly 05-12-2011 05:58 AM

I bought a BluRay player last fall with two movies. I have yet to watch them. Should just sell the damn thing.

I couldn't do that. with a big screen HD TV I can't see streaming from the net. Almost everything looks like crap unless you get it from netflix or a VOD site.

pornguy 05-12-2011 06:26 AM

I still have DVD for now as 98% of the movies we buy are for my son. No sense in paying almost double the price for a disk that will most likely get dropped, get covered in food or be thrown as a Frisbee from time to time.

Wife usese them to throw at me as a weapon.. :(

He's talking about downloading torrents. They usually look great at 4 GB and higher sizes. Most people couldn't tell the difference between the blu-ray and the compressed pirated copy.

GetSCORECash 05-12-2011 07:08 AM

When I got my player several years back at the low price of $550, I purchased several discs. I've bought one or two movies via eBay, but I haven't bought a single disc in last year.

Rochard 05-12-2011 09:05 AM

I still by dvds and have no intention on upgrading to Blu Ray. I've never downloaded entire movies yet.

Tasty1 05-12-2011 09:09 AM

I choose:
- I still use dvds but I plan on updating to blu ray

because there is no option:
- I still use dvds and won't buy a blu ray player

candyflip 05-12-2011 09:10 AM

I buy them and usually don't even bother opening them. I just download a copy via torrents into my HTPC. 1080p HD downloads FTW!

Scott McD 05-12-2011 09:14 AM

I use my PS3 as my Blu-Ray player. Don't watch many movies with it though. Only have about 8 movies i think...

On a proper HD flatscreen I have to disagree.

michael.kickass 05-12-2011 10:03 AM

I'd rather use FullHD dvds

It's not really full HD on a DVD unless it's a very old title. In order to fit the movie on the DVD disk the quality must be reduced. I forget what the technical term is.

JFK 05-12-2011 10:19 AM

Dvd's here, made a mistake and bought Sons of Anarchy the 1st season on Blue Ray, took it home and cursed myself for not reading the package. Was'nt going to buy a player just to watch it, so took it back and exchanged it:winkwink:

bronco67 05-12-2011 10:20 AM

I used to think it was cool to own movies, but then I realize it for suckers. I'd rather use the money for something that won't sit on my shelf un-opened for years. I'll rent.

I sort of agree with you but for my purposes I can still make use of them.

Cherry7 05-12-2011 12:18 PM

Rent Blu Ray and they look fabulous projected - like at the cinema...

DVD still good for choice of tltles, old classics, rare movies etc...

2160p is just around the corner. I wonder if they will come out with a new format for it.

lagwagon 05-12-2011 01:57 PM

i used to buy a lot, but now i just use Apple TV. Plus with this I can stream all my music into my living room with the remote app on the ipad, kinda like having a nice jukebox in there.

Alky 05-12-2011 02:02 PM

I can't believe with how cheap networked or even cloud storage is, that dvd/blurays still exist.

Joxxy 05-12-2011 02:41 PM

That's how much they hold, that's by no means the size of the actual video file.

Seth Manson 05-12-2011 02:45 PM

I probably have 30 - 40 Blurays. I have to really, really like a certain movie to buy it. A few I owned on DVD and then bought the bluray just get the better image quality.

RyuLion 05-12-2011 02:46 PM

3D Blue Ray <--------------

Si 05-12-2011 02:56 PM

I buy dvds more, got about 60 blurays though.

For movie with special effects you cant beat a blu ray!

Most of the newer ones take over half the disk. Even older ones take up 18-20. There are plenty of PS3 games that use up all or most of the space.

DVD movies always had to be compressed from the original movie to make them fit on the disk.

CYF 05-12-2011 03:49 PM

I still use DVD. With upscaling and progressive scan and everything, they look pretty good. I also use netflix.

No plans on going to blu ray.

fuzebox 05-12-2011 04:25 PM

I have an HD TV and a PS3, but have only ever watched one blu-ray. It was Resident Evil 4, and I rented it from Redbox. I was impressed by the high resolution for sure, but I'll probably stick with watching movies on Netflix :2 cents:

D Ghost 05-12-2011 04:26 PM

Discs are dead and a waste of space.

JustDaveXxx 05-12-2011 06:30 PM

I buy them for my 3 year old daughter. They are really cool and are interactive with kid games.

As for me, I never buy Blue Rays for me. I get them sent from blockbuster. I see them once and im done. Blue Rays do have cool extras that i dig on. And the quality is way noticeable.

Not yet, maybe in another 5-10 years.

Blu ray and DVD sales are higher than ever. Even as the average Internet connection gets faster the movie industry will adjust by putting out more stuff with lots of extra features. This will keep collectors buying for a time. I think there is at least 10 years left before hard formats die out.

The Dawg 05-12-2011 10:56 PM

I only have 3 Blu Ray: Transformers 1,2 and Avatar. I stopped buying dvds for myself after my 1st son... My dvd players are full of yo gabba gabba stuff.

cooldude7 05-12-2011 11:48 PM

No but I'll take anything that's free .,
as i m looking to buy ps3 :P

sabin 05-13-2011 12:01 AM

I have a blu ray drive on the computer but no standalone player. The difference really is quite noticeable, but I can't justify getting gouged so badly. I'll wait a few more years for prices to come down.

Scott McD 05-13-2011 09:18 AM

Had a deal on amazon last week. Buy the 160GB model for $300 and get a $50 amazon gift certificate after the order ships.

I have watched 6 GB+ movies on a 71 inch 1080P TV and they look great. You would have to do a side by side comparison with the original blu-ray to see any difference at all. Keep in mind these are full 1080P videos with DTS or dolby digital sound.

These are much better quality than netflix or any streaming service.

A lot of that space is taken up by things like multiple audio tracks, commentary, etc., usually in Full HD audio. That shit takes up a lot of space. If you take out the HD audio and replace it with regular DTS or dolby digital, it saves tons of space, which is how all the torrents come. I have seen the odd one that has HD audio too, and their file sizes are much bigger.

$6 to $30 per title unless it's a box set.
