Honest teen turns lost money into the police...AND THEY JUST KEEP IT!!

That will teach her not to trust the government with money!!

http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/Dalla...121609364.html

DALLAS ? Dallas will keep $2,000 found by a teenager in a parking lot last February.

The money will go into the city's general fund ? not back to Plano high school student Ashley Donaldson, who found the cash in an envelope at the Pavillion Shopping Center in North Dallas.

"I don't regret making the decision I did," she said. "I feel proud of myself for giving the money back. It's one of the biggest decisions of my life."

The 15-year-old Shepton High School student spotted the money on the ground and took it to a nearby Chase Bank.

Over the last three months, the bank and Dallas police have tried to find the owner, but have had no luck.

On Tuesday, police said under a new city policy, the unclaimed money will go into Dallas' general fund ? not back to the person who found it, as in years past.

"We appreciate your honesty," said Dallas police spokesman Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse. "We're going to put the money to good use. It's not going to be wasted, but put to good use for the City of Dallas."

That's not the answer Ashley Donaldson had been hoping for. "I was thinking about a car," she confessed.

It's also not the lesson her parents wanted her to learn.

"I'm happy that she did what she did, but the way it ended? I wish she didn't find it in the first place, because it certainly didn't teach her the right thing," her father Ben Donaldson said.

At the time Ashley found the envelope full of money, she was living in a one-bedroom apartment with her parents and her four brothers and sisters.

I'm not sure what the dad means by "it didn't teach her the right thing." What "right thing" is he looking for? The "right thing" is not expecting a reward, the "right thing" is turning it in.

Though yes, she probably should have been given a reward since the money was not claimed. Probably drug money, LOL.

BS - Find cash on the ground, no name or address, it's yours. Anyone careless enough to lose cash deserves the lesson of it staying lost.

This is in the fucking constitution, dude.

I don't disagree with you. I just don't understand the dads logic. What is the "right thing" he is expecting?

Failed 05-12-2011 01:10 PM

Every story like this makes me wonder why anyone does the "right" thing anymore. Take advantage of the weak, the stupid, and the kind, because if you don't someone else will. Fuck everyone but those you love, this is the way of the world.

The "right thing" he had in mind was them getting a reward for being "good people".

Makes me happy I'm a moral relativist.

brassmonkey 05-12-2011 01:10 PM

that's fucked up

So the lesson is "do something good and someone will give you presents"?

Not why I do good things but hey I am one amazing individual!

That's exactly what he was hoping for, I think.

In fact, the lesson she learned was a more valuable one: the world is a generally shitty place in a lot of respects and if you leave your fate up to the police you're more likely to get fucked than not.

Tom_PM 05-12-2011 01:18 PM

He's mad at his own voter apathy I think. Maybe he had no idea there was a new law that said finders keepers, turner inners givers to policers.

I generally do good things for the following reasons, in order of importance.

1. It will get me laid.
2. It will benefit me financially.
3. It will make me happy.
4. It will make someone else happy.
5. 3 and 4 combine in some cosmic mudita.

I also do bad things for the same reasons, moral relativism FTW.

Scott McD 05-12-2011 01:45 PM

Finders keepers!

The right thing is "returning it to its rightful owner". If the owner cannot be found, it belongs to whoever found it.

She took it to the police, so the police could return it to its rightful owner. the police did not do it, but instead decided to keep it.

V_RocKs 05-12-2011 01:54 PM

She could have bought a very decent used car with that cash in Texas... WTF were her parents thinking?

Maybe GOD left her that cash so she could get a car, get a job and not live with her parents until she is 30.

_Richard_ 05-12-2011 01:56 PM

wish they set up some sort of fund for her.. probably recoup that in 1 donations within the hour

bs.

Kiopa_Matt 05-12-2011 01:59 PM

If I found an envelope stuffed with cash, I'd probably assume it was there for a reason, and leave it right there. Picking it up and walking away with it sounds like it could be dangerous.

u serious ? :upsidedow

theres only reason the envelope stuffed cash is there, so u can pick it up and spend on drinks, hookers :winkwink:

Never ever think "the police will do the right thing"

Fuckers are shady!

My dad was a cop in the 80's. He's told me some whoppers.

One time...

Cops driving thru the park. then hear a thump thump. They put in reverse another thump thumb. Fuckers ran over someone sleeping in the park. Twice!!

Another time:
One Friday night all my dads cop friends made a drive in HB. Came back with over 40 coolers of beer. They went to parties and "confiscated" them. Then gave coolers to the drunk cops and everyone drove home shit faced.

Good times :thumbsup

^_______ What he said.

A LOT less people are going to have their lost items turned in to the police from this point forward. New lesson for Life's Little Instruction Book: Don't lose your shit in Dallas.

HighlyIntoxicated 05-12-2011 02:56 PM

lol how is a city going to put $2000 to good use?

There's absolutely no way to find the rightful owner of an envelope full of $. No name, no address, no nothing which means anyone can say it's their $ and try to claim it. In the end, there's a 99% chance that the rightful owner would not be the one that claimed it.

brassmonkey 05-12-2011 03:04 PM

great example of giving the government too much power

$2k will get them 6 whole feet of new curb. Or 1.5 new lamp posts.

Or 90 miins of fuel for their police chopper.

Rochard 05-12-2011 04:35 PM

If I find $10k in cash on the street, I'm off to Vegas to pretend I'm Charlie Sheen!

woj 05-12-2011 04:44 PM

at least it didn't back fire somehow... would have been funny if she got arrested for it, or had to deal with bunch of paper work / red tape / etc...

You can buy a lot of donuts with that.

You people are way too cynical about Dallas' finest though. It's probably a police kickback, so they did get it back to its rightful owner.

_Richard_ 05-12-2011 05:27 PM

apparently she got 4k from a private donor and now has donation funds at chase bank for her family

Spunky 05-12-2011 05:27 PM

Donuts are expensive these days

dallasnovelty 05-12-2011 05:55 PM

And now to top it off she wound up with $10,400 according to the local Fox 4 news tonight. Some anon person wrote a check for $4,000 just for turning in money she found. She said she wanted a Jeep Liberty for her first car now all the local dealers are gonna give her smokin deal on one since she was in the news.

damn that's a sweet deal!

D Ghost 05-12-2011 06:22 PM

"Don't worry we'll make sure it's spent on hookers and blow by the politicians in your local area!" :thumbsup

They didn't even give her like $500 for a reward. Jeez.

Ayla_SquareTurtle 05-12-2011 06:27 PM

I have turned things in before, but I don't think I'll hand anything over next time. If someone wants to claim it, they can claim it directly from me.

bronco67 05-12-2011 06:36 PM

That money will go to one night out drinking for the po-po.

rowan 05-12-2011 11:14 PM

This girl is living in a ONE BEDROOM apartment with SIX OTHERS and she wants a car??

adultzone 05-13-2011 02:17 AM

She will be awarded for her honesty :D

The Heron 05-13-2011 06:09 AM

I wonder what the rational was behind changing the law/rule that said city keeps what other find? I think most places give you at least a percent...

~Ray 05-13-2011 07:46 AM

they changed their minds and said if no one claims the money, she can have it.

They threw out the excuse that the law originally quoted was only for confiscated drug money.

couldn't the bank look at transaction withdrawals for 2k?

fatfoo 05-13-2011 08:19 AM

The "Lost and Found" is an interesting topic. Sometimes the item goes back to the right owner. Sometimes someone else takes it.

Reminds me of: http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewr...ves/78649.html
http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/...r-being-honest :
Quote:

a student was arrested and charged with “theft by finding” for going to a police station to hand in a mobile phone he had found in the street. As the student later said, “I thought I was doing the right thing and had it thrown back in my face. I wouldn’t go to the police in future. All I was doing was the honest thing. It was a shocking experience.”
