What to do with this old XBOX 360?

Tech guys and people who like to mod things, any ideas here?

I've got an old 1st gen xbox 360 (PAL version) that has just given me the red ring of death. I was suprised it lasted so long actually almost 4 years old. But anyway it has finally given up.

So basically, it is dead! Anything I can do with it? Other than chuck the old machine out and get a new one?

I don't know what, just trying to see if anyone has some ideas?

Wondering if there is something I could do to make something cool out of it. I have no idea what!

Post some ideas, sensible or crazy I'm game :thumbsup

Out of touch with the original Xbox. I use to mod them back in the day and load them up with emulators and games for all of the old school systems, among other things.

If you want to bring it back to life, when my 360 red ringed I found a guy on Craigslist who fixed mine for around $50 and it didn't red ring again. I imagine the same could be done for the original Xbox.

:2 cents:

It is the 360 I am talking about. 1st gen meaning the no HDMI connection / most prone to the RROD. Not the old xbox :winkwink:

I did have one of the original one's modded with everything on it, and a 20gb harddrive mod. You could install games to harddrive and then keep them on there etc. And it played PAL/NTSC

Was thinking of getting someone to repair it, and maybe chip it for NTSC now I am in Canada.

But I dunno, looking for a way to maybe turn it into a PC or media center or something could be cool!

Might have to look into that a bit more :)

Try the old towel trick, you might get a few more weeks out of it.

Wow, not sure how I missed the "360" in the title and post. My bad! :1orglaugh

But yeah if you are outside of your warranty period with Microsoft or have already sent it back to them once for a red ring, you can always use these guys you find on Craigslist or various other places.

This worked for me temporarily but didn't last too long. Definitely a way to bring some more life into it in the meantime.

I was going to say get an ATX motherboard and make a pc out of it, but you already found a video on it.

Video chip has moved out the slot because of overheating. That guy just pulled it back :)

Yeah I heard that is pretty much all it is usually, bad soldering etc.

Going to look up a repair, if not I will try mod it into a PC I think.

if your in canada look it up on kijiji, there will be like 3 or 4 guys on there, probably highschool kids, who can fix it up for you and mod it in one shot for a good deal. way more dependable than fucking around with it yourself--especially if you aren't familiar with the electronics and the problem.

I have found a vid on youtube where the guy repairs it, so going to try that first. Should be able to do it, modified my first console when I was about 10 :)

Some good ideas there!

Right, plan of action, try to repair it first. If that don't work I'm going to try and put an old laptop into the system. The laptop has a broken power supply so maybe I can mingle the 2 together.

If that don't work maybe I will do the radio idea :1orglaugh

I think it might even be 4 years old now, it's an old old one.

Unless Sony get the PS3 network up soon, i'll be looking for something else to do with a "working" PS3. That's over 3 weeks and still not back online... :(
