X-ray or Thermal?

http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/americ...ex.html?hpt=T1

513 mexicans in 2 trailers. The article says x-ray, but the image looks more like a thermal camera. Look how the tires are "hot".

What do you think?

edgeprod 05-18-2011 10:05 AM

I think that's just how tires look under an X-Ray.

pornguy 05-18-2011 10:09 AM

If this had been stopped at the US border I would have thought Heat sensors or Backscatter but this was in Mexico and I have to guess just Xray. even though they have been testing out some new tools on the streets and this could be what it generates.

513 mexicans in 2 trailers... Is it just to get to the USA??? WTF?

d-null 05-18-2011 10:12 AM

that would sure be an uncomfortable and dangerous ride, they have to be tough to get through that, must suck to get stopped in Southern Mexico the coyotes mustn't have had the right connections

Markul 05-18-2011 10:12 AM

That is not thermal. Itd also be useless if its too hot

2MuchMark 05-18-2011 10:14 AM

It's called Backscatter Xray. Medical x-rays are made to penetrate an object but backscatter xray detects radiation that reflects from the object. It's weaker than normal xrays and can't penetrate things much.

The tires aren't "hot". They are reflecting Xrays. If this was an infrared device the tires might be "hot" but so would the ground leading up to the tires (braking turns forward momentum into energy that is pushed into the ground which becomes heat). The brakes themselves would also be very hot. Other parts of the truck such as the engine, exhaust and top or side of the panels might be hot as well if it was in the sunlight. If infrared could "see" through metal, the heat it would "see" would be too dispersed so those people would look "blurry", and not sharp as they appear in this image.

this was in south Mexico, so they were probably mostly Guatemalans and maybe El Salvadorans and Hondurans, it is especially more difficult, expensive, and dangerous for them because there are more than one border to get across

they are hard working people, very dedicated to family, they are willing to take extreme chances and work very hard to try to better the lives of their families

just a punk 05-18-2011 10:16 AM

And yes, it wasn't X-Ray. To do an X-Ray picture you need to have an X-Ray projector at the other side of the truck and the receiver (the camera) opposite to it. There is no such a powerful (non-military and non-scientist) X-Ray projector to expose a whole track. Don't even mention that such a device could kill everybody inside.

CNN is lying as usually. It's typical for such a "news" company which primary auditory is a crowd of rednecks.

L-Pink 05-18-2011 10:17 AM

Wow, a few thoughts. How nasty and hot it would get. $7,000 each, how much work or debt was incurred by each person. Talk about profit, do the math on this one, 513 x $7,000.

I live in San Diego - Mexicans are cheats and thieves, dishonorable to each other and to other Americans. It's their way of life.

The sky is blue. I am not colorist, it's just the way it is.
Mexicans are low-life trolls. I am not racist, it's just the way it is.

The amount of hard work to raise the money, $7,000, or the amount of debt that they will have to repay at very low wages is stunning. I would imagine many were financed by family members that were counting on being paid back once they got to the US.

Unfortunate for all involved that the only future is a low paying job in a foreign country where they aren't wanted.

yes, generally it is all done on credit too, they arrive in the US owing $7000 to the coyotes that got them there, so when they end up finding a job they might work 10 hour days of which half the money might go to pay the debt to the coyotes, and a good chunk of the rest would go back to support their family, leaving them a small amount to live on, which they are good at living frugally, lots of lower priced foods like dried beans to make soups with, etc.

you won't hear them complain, they are very dedicated and have a strong sense of familial duty

as far as the "nasty and hot", that is an understatement, many strong and healthy end up getting sick from the harsh conditions, minimal food and water, very long hours (days) on the road squashed and cramped in poorly ventilated hot trailer, it would be crazy

Customs around the world x-ray trucks and containers on a daily basis. I take it you have never seen the mobile x-ray machines designed specifically for this?

my post was about Guatemalans, Hondurans, and Salvadorans that are smuggled across the southern Mexican border and then across the northern Mexican border

I don't know about your comments on Mexicans, I suspect it is a rather broad brush you are painting though due to bad experiencing standing out in your mind more than anything

1) They do it on stationary equipment (it's very large actually).
2) They don't expose a whole track at once.

:2 cents:

My post was based on what you had wrote in your post, I didn't read the article so I don't know what point, if any, you are trying to make with item 1.

UK customs at least, do scan a whole truck at once, the output is a composite image. Like the one in the article.

fatfoo 05-18-2011 10:57 AM

I do believe there are ways to see through walls such as x rays, ultra violet light, heat detectors, thermal and more. Perhaps you will not be able to see through a wall if it's a very thick piece of concrete or something. Think about country laws, citizenships and immigration laws. The laws are clear to say who can cross the border and who can't. Registrations for ministries, passports and citizenships are very important. A lot of people take these laws very seriously. 513 Mexicans in 2 trailers is a surprising statistic. A Mexicanec that has Canada citizenship or USA citizenship has an advantage.

Yes, a very broad brush. There are good mexicans too.

So what point were you trying to make with reference to the thread when you made statement in the first quote above? I thought it was relevant to the thread.
