Scientists have confirmed planet orbiting dwarf star has stable atmosphere, temps, and liquid water

Quote:

French scientists have confirmed with computer models that Gliese 581d, a planet orbiting a red dwarf star about 20 light years from here, has a stable atmosphere, comfortable temperatures, and a surface covered in liquid water. It's the first planet orbiting another star that could definitely support life, and it's basically next door.

While Gliese 581d is too small and far away to observe directly, we can infer some things about it from the gravitational effects that it has on its parent star and fellow planets. We know that Gliese 581d is about twice the size of Earth (and six times the mass), we know that it's rocky (not a gas giant like Jupiter or Saturn). This means that it's large enough and dense enough to be able to hold on to a substantial atmosphere. We can also estimate about how much energy Gliese 581d receives from its red dwarf star, and based on all of this information, French scientists have been able to model a range of potential climates showing that "GJ581d will have a stable atmosphere and surface liquid water for a wide range of plausible cases."

On the down side, since the planet is much larger 2 times the size of earth its gravity is 2 times that of earth as well.

So there will be no basking in the sun on other planets anytime soon:(
Let alone trying to get there/ It might take a while till I invent space folding.

Yeah it says with our current technology would take humans 300,000 years, and a probe could take 1-2 centuries. I guess we won't be getting the unobtanium anytime soon.

Hacking the universe... space folding. :)

Gravity scales with mass as opposed to size, so think of along the lines of 6 times as much even worse :/

You beat me too, but yes you're correct.

"We know that Gliese 581d is about twice the size of Earth (and six times the mass)" and "at double Earth's gravity"

Are the scientists wrong to say it's only double?

D Ghost 05-26-2011 05:45 PM

And false, 6x mass does NOT mean 6 times gravity.

The radius is indeed proportional to the cube root of the mass so if r = r_earth * M^(1/3). Then, g will be g_earth * M / (M^(1/3))^2 = g_earth*M^(1/3) and everyone will be 1.91 times heavier.

You might be able to walk for a little bit before... ROFL

"Before fainting, he mentions yawning and feeling "sleepy and cold". Chronic hypergravity tests on rats, mice, dogs and monkeys (between 1.25g and 2.5g) have shown an effect on circadian rhythms: decreased locomotor activity (perhaps indicating drowsiness) and a drop in core body temperature, a "centrifuge-induced hypothermic response"." http://jap.physiology.org/content/95/3/1266.full

But lifeforms very well could have evolved to what we would know as extra gravity.

This weight wouldn't be very crippling, you should still be able to walk for an hour or so. ROFL

If Gliese 581d has the same composition as earth it would be compressed a bit more however

:Oh crap Guess not lol forgot the ^2 on the r

Humans could survive in a 2g environment. easily.

If something is so far away, how could they possibly know what the planet is like? I know it's science and all that, but it's just hard to believe.

They dont know for sure what it is like. But they did confirm that they know what their computer models are like.

Fucking media... "a wide range of plausible cases" does not confirm one damn thing. Idiots..

Jakez 05-26-2011 11:05 PM

2x the gravity of Earth, is that really life threatening? Doubt it..

http://a57.foxnews.com/static/manage.../theplanet.JPG

WTF is this? lol after pasting the URL I noticed foxnews.com, but if that's where this planet is at then WTF?

Zorgman 05-26-2011 11:30 PM

Don't worry if we ever got to Cliese581 there will still be slow internet, taxes, girls with saggy boobs, hairy pussies and of course death. But lets look on the bright side, it's 300,000 years away.
