Discover what Google and Facebook are hiding from us [amazing video]

Read several articles on this topic over the last few days. I watched this clip
in full length. They are hiding more things from us than we can imagine.
What Eli Pariser presented is exactly what I have noticed on many occassions
but failed to make the connection. Just WOW!

Saw this on Hulu, very good points.

Dude, I know, I tell people, no one listen to me. I could say that I'm almost tired of explaining the big brother thing to people. Some say that I'm paranoid freak. I know much more than this dude is speaking. I could write you a book about web surveillance by Google, Microsoft, Facebook etc. Just do a search of my threads. I think that only small percentage of ppl can still defeat this shit, those are people who use Linux, who know what's in the web browser code and how communication between servers works. 99,999% of people have no idea, they just dunno and if you will try to explain it to them the reaction may differ but it's very likely deny and laugh or just lack of care. This is sad, very sad.

Googl is everywhere, now it's the level when it's ridiculous and disgusting.

The FB algo really needs some work. I literally have to go visit the friends' pages I want to keep in touch with to see what is up.

Working as planned.

I really started to get pissed off when Google started returning Adsense results based on my browser history and not the content of my websites.

seems like nothing to me. If google wants to display different results to me then someone else, ok. Who cares. If I don't like the results I get then I can go use another site, turn on CNN or pick up a news paper. It's just websites. If you don't like the way they are run, then don't use them. Pretty simple to me, I don't understand why people get all bent out of shape over this shit.

They sure do that but it only seems to happen if chrome is your browser.

Konda 05-26-2011 08:10 PM

If you are logged in to gmail/google and facebook they track every website you visit.
probably like 90+% of the sites these days have either a google analytics account or a facebook like/share button which they use to track what you visit.

Interesting points.

Can you recommend just one or two things the average guy can do to protect himself?

For search use scroogle, that's all I use. http://scroogle.org/

Only one or two?

The problem is that that even if you kill one thing another one is still on your back and the saga continues.
You must kill all of them in order to force Google or FB to loose your trace.

Ok. here are some:

1. Stop thinking that your ass is safe and that big corporations like Google care about your privacy.

2. Monitor your connections, most connection can be easily checked. Do a simple lookup tests.
Open your browser and visit one site and analyse what connection your machine made,
you will be surprised that there is many among the only one that is needed (the site you wanted to visit)
Find out what makes that connection and find out how to kill them.

3. Forget about privacy in Windows7 or MacOS lol get Linux.

4. Browsers, don't use Chrome, if you want Chrome get Iron instead, pretty the same and faster.
If you use FireFox install add-on to kill thirdparty java scripts there are a few NoScript etc, install something to kill headers and unique identifiers etc BeeFree is a nice add-on.
Disable Google safe-browsing in your browser.
Disable Google geo location in your browser.
Disable Google favicon (Opera in order to track your ass force you to query favicons, Opera actually recently has lots of tracking stuff but it is possible to disable it all, do some testings like mentioned above and disable every unnecessary connections makers one by one)
Disable eww… the best is to remove all Google bullshit from your browser or to get one that is free of this all thirdparty crap.

5. Always clean cookies after browsing or setup your browser to do it for you.

6 . Clean your flash cookies as well, Google loves them.

7. Don't be all the time on one single private IP address.

8. If possible kill the middle man, I mean lol, not this one but I know that you would like.. I mean something like akamai network...
I know it speed ups but if you don't care about ultra fast connection then it makes a sense.
(You can block and control out and in connection with your firewall)

Want more? The most important is just to be aware of the rules. But I am afraid that in future US gov via corporations like Google or Facebook will be everywhere and it will not be possible to hide anymore unless you are prepared to live in some deep underground cave and to don't talk to any people OMG.

You sound like the people that think there is some elite society that isn't subject to what everyone else is. If Google logged every fine detail of every person on the planet it's not like their staff and political figures would be excluded. :2 cents:

Either way, what is happening is going to happen regardless, there's no mass awareness campaign that's going to make everyone stop using Google's stuff.

You're sounding alarm bells where none need to be. There is nothing in this video about surveillance or other big brother stuff.

He is basically saying that results based on search you do may yield different results for other people, because what you have searched for or clicked on in the past is different from other people.

Google and Facebook's interest in what you click on, where you are, and what you search for is not any kind of invasion of privacy in my opinion. They are only trying to serve you what they think you want to click on, which was the speaker's point. Clicks = cash.

I am going to copy/paste a response from a member of another board "JBavahz".

- It isn't like this should be a huge surprise.

- Traditional news has always filtered the data and THEY have always decided what you
would get.

- I'm convinced the Army or the goverment is in TOTAL control.

- The only "freedoms" we experience are the ones they LET us think we have.

- We've been frogs in that pot of water with the slowly raising temperature.

- Only those that are old farts like me have the hindsight to see that, for the schools avoid
much of history, for they are simply indoctrination camps.

- People talk about not getting "chipped" LOL .. No need for that, what is in your pocket?
--> a cell phone,
--> a food discount card,
--> a credit card,
-->cameras every where with face recognition.

- The technology we know about is what we are given, we have no real clue what high
tech Gizmocks they have behind the curtain!

The man is right!

Pretty interesting indeed. Noticed this a little while ago on FB, it would remove friends off my feed, I thought they deleted me.

The whole purpose is to give the user the best experience possible, make your site smarter and better than the others and more will come

yeah im an idiot. Actually, I a realist. Not a conspiracy nut, busy body worry about retarded shit, or the type of person who thinks their life is so interesting that govt would want to spy on them. 300 million people in the US alone, im sure they are monitoring me 24/7 and watching all of my internet "moves" :upsidedow. If so I am sure they are bored off of their ass.

Unless you doing something really wrong, then you shouldn't worry about people monitoring what you do. I know you would be embarsed if people found out that you go to sites where fat chicks have sex with food or the gay midgets site, but in the grand scheme of things, no one else really cares, especially the govt.

All these people getting in a tissy because someone is serving them a particular ad or tracking them going to yahoo, posting on GFY, watching videos on youtube or whatever other boring shit they do online.

What's that got to do with anything? The cameras are not recognizing specific faces, just faces to focus them in the photo.

Facial recognition isn't just marking an area that has a high probability of being someone's face; there is software that is capable of identifying people. It's typically used for security and law enforcement because there would probably be an uproar if facebook started auto-tagging images (or even offered names for you to confirm)

Click on "Edit Options" (I think it's at the top right of your news feed), then change from "Friends and pages you interact with most" to "All your friends and pages." This will bypass FB's algorithm.

You're looking at your own specific circumstances rather than the bigger picture.

Democracy relies on most of the population being dumb and accepting what is offered to them through a relatively limited set of authoritative channels. How many people do you think would just believe something they're told by a politician, versus those who would go and research it further?

Are we talking about point-and-shoot camera face recognition or surveillance cams? :)

There was a startup several years ago that was planning to come out with a toolbar that would recognise and tag any people who appeared in photos on the current web page you were viewing. It initially required manual tagging by users but as it saw more photos of a each person it got better at automatically identifying new images of them.

Very cool technology, but quite a creepy use of it. Imagine what it might recognise and tag (with a real name) on a paysite or TGP gallery?

Mad about what? Phone companies have logged every fine detail about who you are calling for decades. What's the big deal? Government may issue a warrant to observe what sites or searches you're doing? What do you have to worry about if you aren't breaking any laws?
