Need quick math help..

If 1:100 children go missing, and in this program there are over 1,000,000 children and only two have ever been missing would it also be right that

A child not in the program is 5000 times more likely to go missing
AND
That a child is 99% less likely to go missing?

Juicy D. Links 05-31-2011 03:00 PM

yes yes yes..........

Tom_PM 05-31-2011 03:02 PM

Maybe those same 2 children go missing 5000 times each, lol.

JamesGw 05-31-2011 03:02 PM

I believe that only A is true, but I'm not 100% on that.

fatfoo 05-31-2011 03:07 PM

You did not provide enough information to decide whether a child is more likely to go missing in the program or go missing outside of the program.

96ukssob 05-31-2011 03:09 PM

the answer is C, all of the above

chronig 05-31-2011 03:15 PM

Based on these guerilla statistics the first part is true (5000x more likely), not sure about second part

woj 05-31-2011 03:22 PM

1 and 2 are conflicting statements.... so both can't be true... :2 cents:

How old are the kids, and are they black?

Prob of Child Missing (not in program) = 1/100 = 0.01
Prob of Child in Program Missing = 2/1000000 = 1/500000 = 0.000002

Statement 1
Prob Child Missing/Prob of Child in Program Missing = 0.01 / 0.000002 = 5000

Statement 2
(Prob of Child in Program Missing/Prob Child Missing)*100 = (0.000002/0.01)*100 = 0.02%

The child within the program has only 0.02% the chance of going missing as the child not in the program, which means (100-0.02) = 99.98% less likely to go missing

SomeCreep 05-31-2011 04:30 PM

all i know is E = mc^2

Let's say that 33% are black, eight percent are vietnameze and 12% are caucasian and 43% don't count

How in the hell is that relevant?!!!

Some were kidnapped, you have three buckets of water and you're banned from gfy... The good news is that most missing child cases are not abductions :thumbsup

adultzone 05-31-2011 08:12 PM

sad.....

DBS.US 05-31-2011 09:37 PM

In real life, the program owner would shave the number of kids that go missing to make is program get more government funding.

wehateporn 06-01-2011 06:05 AM

I'm guessing that you're not a student?

Thanks for your help, there.
I didn't want to ask my lady friend, because I didn't want to tell her I didn't know math very well... then she managed to get on GFY and read all of my posts, any way. :1orglaugh

Math I can work out, but my mind never liked it and I have my own crude ways of doing things. I can figure out what I need to divide by which and add to a how many and multiply with another thing - I just got lazy

So thanks :)

CurrentlySober 06-02-2011 11:52 AM

I dont really enjoy discussing children, in any shape or form, on GFY...

lol...I guessed you weren't asking the question as a student as GFY people are more business focused.

No worries...I was testing myself as it has been so many years now :thumbsup

You didn't word the problem in a manner to avoid some of the confusion. It "should" have read:

On a whole, if 1:100 children go missing but in our "Don't Let Juicy D Buy Candy or Puppies For Luring" program there are over 1,000,000 children and only two have ever been missing would it also be right that.

A child not in the program is 5000 times more likely to go missing
AND That a child is 99% less likely to go missing?

For extra credit:

Is Juicy 3X, 7X or 12X more likely to rob a candy store or steal a puppy rather than sue the state for cruel and inhumane punishment - show your work.
