U.S. government is going after Bitcoin

Not satisfied with eliminating digital piracy from the world, two U.S. senators want to crack down on Bitcoin, an open-source digital currency.

Senators Charles Schumer and Joe Manchin are pressing officials to take action against Bitcoin, which Gawker recently claimed is being used on underground black markets to purchase illegal drugs. The senators expressed their concerns in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder and Drug Enforcement Administration chief Michele Leonhart, Reuters reports.

Unlike other currencies, Bitcoin uses a peer-to-peer technology to manage transactions and validate payments. Since no bank is involved, purchases don?t leave a paper trail for law enforcement agencies to track criminal activity.

Everyone says why don't you open a money transfer service.. my god, to deal with problems like that, what a headache.

Well Duh!?! upsetting the world monetary system and circumventing traditional banking systems isn't going to benefit anyone in the long run.

Why not just lobby to remove any and all banking and financial regulations in every country? That should end well for everyone.

"Gawker recently claimed is being used on underground black markets to purchase illegal drugs"

lol you mean like any currency found on the planet? AMAZING!

"Since no bank is involved, purchases don?t leave a paper trail for law enforcement agencies to track criminal activity."

Imagine that, the banks and police not being able to track your every move. Using gold or silver would probably look the same.

Because when you have a lobby firm at your disposal you typically want to use it to make yourself lots more cash and gain lots more power. Wasting it on silly shit like that is well.. silly. :)

V_RocKs 06-09-2011 11:08 AM

US Currency is also used to buy drugs on the black market!

It is also used to finance wars...

Emil 06-09-2011 11:17 AM

lol, the banks just dont like Bitcoin. They probably thinks it best to try to kill it before it grows really big.

As far as I know most drugs are still bought in other currencies. To take down Bitcoin because people may use it to buy drugs is just silly. That is not the reason they want to take it down.

U.S. & Israeli governments want to take over everything that they don't have control yet like African countries oil or some parts of the Internet. They are like fucking locust of the world. Fuck off from the internet and fuck off from other countries, you would do better concentrating on your own problems like unemployment rate and so on. :321GFY

How about make it illegal to use it? With no one legit using it, that currency will be completely useless...

u-Bob 06-09-2011 04:14 PM

It was to be expected. They'll go after anything that threatens their monopoly.

Not trolling or anything but didn't you in a previous bitcoin thread say it couldn't be taken down. I think it was you or your friend that was a bitcoin dealer or converter or something like that, i forget as its been a while.

That shit could get turn off like a light. One law mandating that ISPs must drop any bitcoin packets passing through their network and bitcoin goes bye-bye

Not really sure if ISP's can recognize whats a bitcoin packet and what is not. But I'll give you the benifit of the doubt. Still it doesn't matter cause bitcoin is worldwide.

alias 06-09-2011 04:45 PM

Bitcoin is just to break people into the idea of alternate compensation and old school barter.

Interesting conversation here where they discuss Gavin Andresen's upcoming visit to the CIA Headquarters in McLean, VA. The other guest is Amir Taaki who is a open source game developer who decided to jump on the Bitcoin bandwagon. I think the most interesting parts of this conversation are the CIA visit and the point where Jason McCabe Calacanis starts talking about the US making Bitcoin illegal. Amir Taaki immediately laughs and says that 15,000 "hacktavists" will never let that happen and that his goal is to get enough big business support behind Bitcoin that the US will have no choice but to cave. I bet he is on the no-fly list right now... what do you think? He must not have heard of rendition.

This is serious shit these guys are doing and I don't think they even have a clue how serious it really is.

adultmobile 06-09-2011 05:27 PM

Bitcon have some major issues (you mine from GPU lol - I have read it has some parts which looks a little centralized to certain ports and channels - the total bitcons dollar value can be purchased by Manwin, whole bitcon economy like $4 million dollar?), but the idea of money like bittorrent, made in different way, maybe to fund wikileaks-like sites who can't use paypal, it can be a new tool difficult to shut down. Will need of course lots of people who change it (illegally) from and to dollars, so (next one after bitcon) currency to be trusted no less then dollars.
No one bank or corporate would accept or change (what after bitcons) however, as made illegal, so would be limited to whatever can't be paid officially, so lots of stranage countries and merchandises.

You say it like it's a bad thing...

Even though its pretty absurd thing to believe, seeing as how the governments of the countries you're blaming are still operated and run by other humans that are just as clever and flawed more or less than any other country's governments around the world...

Humans like the idea of controlling their surroundings. In modern society its done on a global industrial level. You're an absolute fool if you really believe that its just Americans and Israelis that are evil and out to control the world. Plus I'll bet it makes it easier for you to comprehend things when you have "enemies" that aren't like you, to blame everything on. What about the Vatican? Or OPEC? Still just American and Israelis trying to control the world eh?

:thumbsup

Bittorrents won't get this treatment because of the First Admendment issues it would bring up. I'd say there's zero hope for that kind of protection in the bitcoin arena. Not much in the way of speech even happening.

Barry-xlovecam 06-09-2011 10:13 PM

Are bitcoins really freely transferable personal property or a circumvention of sovereign currency?

That's the real argument ...
