How to adapt or die

I posted this in a thread but spent so much time on it I figured I'd post it for all to read, loathe, piss off and cause Trolls to hate. But if it helps anyone even a wee then it's worth it.

HOW TO ADAPT OR DIE - By Mister Peabody

(Please note: If you're an AFFILIATE who does not produce your own content but rather promotes programs then not all these will apply to you. Some will, some won't, more on that at the end.)

1. Shoot more interesting/unique content. Sure, this costs money - BUT it costs more in imagination. True, just about everything has been done or tried when it comes to filming the sex act, but look around at what you see EVERYWHERE (or most everywhere). Now do the exact opposite. Start with that.

(But what do you MEAN Mister Peabody? Please help me understand....okay: STOP SHOOTING SEX SCENES THAT RESEMBLE CONSENSUAL RAPE. Let's start there. The nastier the better is not what will sell in the next 3-5 years. Use your imagination. if you cannot, get out of adult you're ruining it for the rest of us.)

2. Create either very interesting websites or extremely simple ones. Say WHAT??? You read that right. Here's a clue: see all those FLASHING PORN SITES you see everywhere, laden with FLASHING ADS that send you into POPUP HELL? Don't do that. It's like walking into a RedLight District with neon XXX's flashing in your face and the smell of chlorine and cum. (If you want that kind of shit it's available everywhere.) Create sites people would want to stay on for more than 30 seconds. Work on your "stickiness". be creative and differant.

OR

Create extremely simple tours. Simple navigation (4 links MAX). Get the surfer to the Join page ASAP and without them having to think about it. Literally design the site with your cock (or a dildo, if you're a lady) in your hand and the mouse in the other. What we have now are messes upon messes of ugly-ass tours.

(And YES I am guilty of some of this, too. LOL Do as I say, not as I do in some cases.)

3. Think outside the Affiliate box. If you rely on programs for your content then you will have less flexibility in some areas but more in others. Take the content, create sites that do NOT look like a generic affiliate/keyword blog or a freesite. Take the time to make the surfer think it's YOUR content. Treat it like it's content you yourself created. You are more likely to put some loving care into something if it's "yours" then if it's just some product you're hawking. Once your "not like everybody else's" sites are done they WILL be "yours" - because they're unique to you.

4. Help yourself out psychologically: "get over it" and move on. Stop beating yourself up (I know you do it), the world can do that to you all by itself without you helping it out. So many who started in adult a few years back or longer have not MENTALLY adapted. They cling to "the good ol' days" as the "bad new days" consume them. Here's a tip: everyone and everything you ever knew about the adult industry is DEAD. Today is a new day, the day after the funeral. How are you going to cope, pick up the pieces and live life again?

It's a new world, an ever-changing one, in life not just on the Internet. How you made money yesterday is not how you're making it today, and it won't be how you're making it tomorrow. Understand this, accept it, go through whatever stages of the grieving process you need to, then take a deep breath and realize it's a New Day. Can't stand the idea of "starting from scratch"? Then time to get out of Adult. You've had your fun here. Please trust me that, emotionally, you will be better off once you make a DECISION: carry on in this brave new (uncertain) online world or time to get out.

Once you go through this process of NOT lying to yourself but facing the Truth you will be able to more clearly think.

5. Focus on what makes you money, drop EVERYTHING else. Of course, if NOTHNG is making you money then it's time to find another profession. But if SOME things are still earning for you focus on that and drop everything that is holding you back. Maybe you built two dozen blogs or websites 3 years ago and are still working them while your traffic and ratios keep going down, down, down. STOP. Let it go (see #4). Just let it go. You're in the Paysite business but dating makes you more money. Go for the dating, let the Paysites die. You're promoting cams because you ALWAYS HAVE promoted cams; drop that shit if it isn't earning for you the way it used to, and promote the penis pills that are rocking for you. SWITCH.

It's hard to let go, especially when you've spent YEARS building. But you simply have to (eventually). Why not right now?

We stop ourselves out of laziness, ego, an unwillingness to learn YET AGAIN something new (a coding language, how to build a certain kind of site, etc). But you cannot let fear stop you.

In the end, there is no "Industry", despite the shows and conventions. We are ALL scattered businesses, big and small, some inter-connected and semi-dependant on each other, some totally independant. In the end, we must all do what is best for US. Manwin, CCBill, AVN, Playboy, TopBucks, Robbie, Barefootsies, Loaded Cash, Reality Kings - EVERYONE WATCHES OUT FOR THEMSELVES. It's time you did, too. Be ethical, be respectful, work hard and don't screw people - but look out always for #1.

CONCLUSION: So what does "adapt or die" MEAN, exactly? The above gives you some clues, tips and hints but eventually there is no "answer". In nature, no one tells the little bean plant how to reach for the sunlight to survive but it somehow figures out a way, every damn time. The "answer" to "Adapt or Die" will be a differant answer for every person. That's what's so maddening.

Therefore if there isn't a simple answer someone can kist give you then you must come up with it yourself. If you cannot then you have failed at adaption and you will die.

But if you do manage to figure out what works best FOR YOU then you will be like the little bean plant, still here after millions of years. Good luck!

Content producers have gotten so "desensitized" that they shoot harder and harder stuff to cater to the hardcore porn consumers as opposed to the broad base. What they shoot a lot of the the time is moronic as well.. Ever try just getting some "plain" anal sex scenes? It's all gangbangs, DP, threesomes, gaping etc... That is the sort of stuff for the more hardcore consumers.. But there's far more guys that just want plain old cock in ass content.

Create extremely simple tours. Simple navigation (4 links MAX).

Simple.. plain.. and LOW BANDWIDTH!... As soon as everyone started getting their sweet fast broadband, they started building fancy tours that take a long time to load on even a faster connection, conversion rates started to drop. You want to garner the most sales per visitor? Then make your damn site so that everyone can view it quickly and the content inside is something they can actually view. All the HD massive videos should be an option but NOT be the standard. Don't let a designer dictate your site design. Morons.

"with just 57 percent of connections at 2Mbps or higher"
"with 24 percent of its connections counted as "high broadband." (5Mbps or higher)"
"18 percent of those who took a US speed test recorded download speeds that were slower than 768 kilobits per second, which does not even qualify as basic broadband"

I have an older computer here I use to check things and my internet connection isn't all that speedy. And I can tell you that there's no way I'd be staying a member at most sites.. It's no wonder Tubes are so popular.. You can watch the videos just fine on old systems, slower BW etc. But try and watch the exact same thing in the actual members area and it's just not going to happen.

Excellent points! And what I wrote was never meant to be definitive but rather was off the top of my head in response to someone asking "HOW do I adapt? HOW HOW?" (I thought I was at an Indian casino. heh.)

You always gotta put yourself in the minds (and bodies) of your potential customer. A certain percentage did not stop by to buy but rather to look and/or jerk around. No problem, my little "World" is open to everyone, c'mon in!!

Another certain percentage is considering buying but do not make impulse buys for whatever reason (budget, discipline/wait til payday, once CC clears, etc). No problem - watch this nice preview video, bookmark us, consider it and c'mon back.

Another percentage is horny as FUCK and kinda frustrated. Unless he bookmarked your site (see above) chances are he came to you to cum. Heh. Well, he came SOMEwhere to cum, and he's stopped by a few other sites along the way. Is he ready? Make sure he can't pop on the Tour but instead wants to - NEEDS to - hit that Join button. Sure, he could to a tube but then he's gotta search for another/similar brunette you have on your tour, then fast forward to the good parts, then...then...oh FUCK there goes the erection and the wife is calling. Shit!

Gotta go for that last percentage. LOL

Good luck!

Good stuff, #4 is spot-on and brutally honest.:thumbsup I think it was D-Null who once wrote, if this biz is not something you're doing or thinking about every waking moment, it's time to get out and move on. - Hit home with me because I could easily pull the plug and make as much/more money in sales, but I'd rather do this.

Most people are motivated by the money and where I somewhat disagree. Don't get me wrong, money is fucking great but what motivates me is to take a unique concept and make it a profitable venture. I've had more then a few failures that cost hundreds of thousands, but the ones that do/did work were pure home runs.

#6: I think you should of added to stick to what you're good at. The reason there is so much failure in this biz is because most wear too many hats. I have my own Networks that does well, but I spent/wasted years learning all programs/aspects on how to make it run, alone. The journey was a lesson but in the end it revealed that some of us are not "true" players and need to adapt in different ways. I've netted more money teaching/consulting unique marketing methods due to past failures and success.

Meaning, there are players who can show up everyday and play the game. Then there are pinch hitters who can't, but can easily bring in the winning run each and every time no-matter the pressure.

Ansolutely correct man! I had to stop as I was just rattlimg off points. LOL Interesting that you finally realized to stick to what you're good at after wearing so many hats. I decided to hire some help when I realized I was literally doing 23 differant jobs. Full-time, paying gigs at other companies! So now I do maybe 17 but at least i can breathe now. And post random "tips" on GFY on a Sunday. :D

Anyway, you learned and adapted. This is what I mean. Others may have made differant choices than you and struggled more.

BTW: I always assume the phrase "adapt or DIE" means, by 'die', that you leave adult and do something else. the funny thing is, if that something else makes you MORE money (as in mainstream) then isn't THAT "adapting"? LOL So maybe dying (leaving adult) IS adapting.

Or did I just blow your mind?

shimmy2 06-12-2011 04:09 PM

filming unique content is a pain in the ass and it usually has repercussions. if nobody has done it before there is probably a multitude of reasons why. but for the risk takers there are rewards.

It is a good post regardless of how people are going to view it. Most newbies get into porn by posting a thread, hiring some designer to build some sites that are based around some content that they are cutting off a disc that everyone and their mother has purchased for content. All the content is over saturated and yet they plan on becoming millionaires.

If you shoot your own content and keep it fresh and keep the imagination of the surfers going. If you are building galleries, try to think in the mind of the surfer and not what you think is hot. Adapt or die is very true for today's porn.

Not at all we're definitely on the same page. As I blow-off mowing the lawn, let's take this to the next level and explain why most in Adult can't make it in mainstream and eventually come back to adult. It took me years to understand such a simple concept and break the habit.

Most in adult who are transitioning to mainstream bring in the wrong marketing methods and mindset. The adult business has condition them to consistently market to a visual compulsion rather then a true interest/necessity. Because that's the bulk of all mainstream - an interest or a necessity. I assure you, no one is going whip-out their cock and CC for vitamin supplements.

Anyway, somewhat back to "adapting". The ones I've seen in adult who've transitioned well are for damn sure not the SEO's, visual content producers, or the slick designers. Although, they are important, the ones I've seen make the transition well are the ones who use to write the truly organic sex stories. Remember them? - why?- because they naturally generate interest and then necessity.

That's interesting because one of the things I always say is:

Porn is filled with people who couldn't get a job doing anything else.

For many this is the "last chance saloon". LOL Even for me, I am not "above" anyone here! I was so down-and-out I couldn't see the gutter, let alone climb out of it. I needed a business I could start with nothing, zero, because that's what I had: zero.

But I do remember my life in the "mainstream world" and you are 100% correct: if something is "interesting" or fills a need then the visuals almost get in the way. It's a completely differant mindset.

What's interesting to me, tho, is when I employ some "mainstream" marketing techniques to Mister Peabody World then my sales almost always go up. Maybe I'm unconsciously tapping into a porn surfer's "mainstream mind" and he responds? I dunno, but I know "mainstream" staples like email marketing (as just one example) works incredibly well in adult.

So why do you keep "coming back"? Oh right - you're Jesus. The Bible told me you'd be back. Nevermind. :)

Nice post but kinda obvious???

adapting means adapting to the ever changing technology, trends and culture of the internet. ie: don't run a link list in the age of the tube.

Exactly. It's prob better to build quality affil sites rather than the old school method of having 100 sites but all of them nothing special.

3. Once your "not like everybody else's" sites are done they WILL be "yours" - because they're unique to you.

and you have better chance at getting love from google too if you a unique quality site

Here's a tip: everyone and everything you ever knew about the adult industry is DEAD.

Awesome tip. As 488 said and I can testify to.. link sites will prob not make you rich anymore. Why? Because the only way to get traffic is buy it and maybe you then make a small profit. But small profits dont purchase maid service. :) [ref from another thread]

5. Focus on what makes you money, drop EVERYTHING else.

Amen brotha. The password for 2011, espec for the affil is "consolidation"

Therefore if there isn't a simple answer someone can list or give you then you must come up with it yourself. If you cannot then you have failed at adaption and you will die.

I like to say, "the results are in your hard work" All this is theory. The only way to get results is to try new stuff and keep what is working and eliminate what doesnt. Which is the hard part of all this... it takes time.

You WILL waste time in this biz trying stuff. We all do. Try not to. But it is inevitable.

Good to have Jesus in the industry. I know things will be fine now. :)

Seriously one of the best posters on the board and always read your stuff. :thumbsup

ya i was ripping my hair out last year trying to find buyers and upgrade my software. i worked 80-120 hours a week, usually with unimpressive results. then i realized i was working way more hours in this down economy then i ever did in the boom years.

i was working more an more hours trying to attract buyers, but they just weren't out there. all the future porn entrepreneurs were home (or homeless) worrying about their own asses.

this year i decided to step back a bit and use this time to get healthy and play with my family. i swim every morning and spend at least a few hours a day with my wife and baby. as a result, i feel healthier, happier, and i'm selling a lot more software this year than i did last year.

the moral of the story is - when its slow, take time for yourself. it will always get busy again. the economy can't be in recession forever :helpme

This cannot be overstated and should be repeated.

Now THIS is an excellent example of how to change, re-arrange and get healtheir and happier. Nice!! Something we should all remember because the instinct is to WORK HARDER when things are going rough but sometimes no amount of hard work will get you through a situation because the situation is not under your control. If that makes sense.

Vjo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you man - always read your posts (and listen/watch your excellent YouTube embeds)!
