Everything is free, so go to all the historical monuments and museums. How long do you have?

You can hit the monuments all in one day, but you should give yourself one day each for each Smithsonian you intend to visit. They're a lot bigger than people seem to think.

Remember: No dancing in the Jefferson memorial, or if you do get someone to film it and then edit out all the scenes of the security guards giving you ample warnings so it looks like they're jacking you up for no reason.

Ask complete strangers and official looking people where The Jeffersonian is, and tell them you need the help of Dr. Temperance Brennan.

where ever you decide to visit in the US capital make sure you bring along a canoe and some shovels. The BS is deep in that city

Smithsonian, and the surrounding monuments. I walked it all last year, was a helluva good time. Im a history buff though, so depends on what you like.

One thing to do the Smithsonian. The reactor panel from the sub my dad was on and work on is there. USS Sanlance 660. Very cool stuff

I passed though there once.

The surrounding residential neighborhoods at night, walk around, absorb the ambiance, strike conversation with locals.

Hit up the spy museum.

I am on my phone and can't lookup the name but there is a cool restaurant on the roof of a hotel that overlooks the White House. Have lunch there.

For bars, hit up the Adams Morgan neighborhood.

Be sure to check out Georgetown. Great restaurants and shopping. The famous stairs from the Exorcist are next to the Exxon on M street. Walk up them and stroll around Georgetown University.

Used to live in Gaithersburg. Just take the metro red line into the city. Easier than driving if you do not know the shortcuts.

The Spy Museum is pretty cool, it's a privately run place. get there early. Also cross over the river and go to Arlington National Cemetery, Kennedy's Memorial, Tomb of the Unknown Solider, watch the changing of the guard, that is very impressive.
