Cloverfield (movie)

I finally got around to watching the Cloverfield movie. I'm about 33 minutes into it and it looks stupid.

Aliens was horror, The Thing (John Carpenter) was scary.

Cloverfield is kinda like a mixup of bad movie making, rehashed ideas and cookie cutter plot.

I'm 34:49 minutes into it, and still think its stupid.

candyflip 06-16-2011 07:33 PM

Awful film, from start to finish.

camperjohn64 06-16-2011 07:37 PM

I'm actually turning watching the movie into more of a game. Trying to look where scenes were shot, or finding mistakes and noticing scene decoration.

Kind of like watching porn movies and looking for shadows of the cameraman, or noticing the electrical sockets to see where it was shot.

camperjohn64 06-16-2011 07:52 PM

47 minutes into it. Still stupid. At least I'm getting some coding done.

camperjohn64 06-16-2011 08:32 PM

59 minutes into the movie:

Girl: "What was THAT?!?!!"
Guy: "That's a really bad thing"

at 1:03 (smaller, different monster):
Girl: "What was THAT?!?!!"
Guy: "Something else, also terrible"

I don't think you are paying enough attention because you are on GFY. You really need to sit down and understand the plot and story.. of course it's going to look like shit. Also if you are under the age of like.. 25. I don't even think you should watch the movie because it sucks so bad.

Elli 06-16-2011 08:46 PM

I really enjoyed it and am anticipating the sequel. If you liked it even just a bit, check out Gwoemul (the host). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468492/

chronig 06-16-2011 08:47 PM

one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

I didn't find a plot at all. I was expecting that the main guy had inside in formation or something - like the reason he was going to Japan was because of earthquakes, or because japan was drilling and they unearthed the monster, SOMETHING like that...

There was no tie-back, no reason for why the monster was there, like it was there fault to begin with. There was also no solution, just lots of shaky camera and a few montser shots.

When I make a movie, and it sucks, I hope people say nice things about it, rather than criticize it like I do.

Thats the whole point of Cloverfield. If a Godzilla like monster ever attacked, the common citizen wouldn't know what the hell is going on. Wouldn't know where it came from, would have no ties to it and would just be running like hell to try and save himself and the ones he loved. It would all be one massive clusterfuck of non-sensical violence.

For that Cloverfield was cool.

Yes there were some cheesy scenes, but all in all Cloverfield was a good original movie.

If you were expecting you run of the mill horror flick, then go rent a Carpenter film.

Yeah man, you missed the whole point of the movie. The point of the movie was following a group of normal people through the attack on the city. Nothing more, nothing less.

brassmonkey 06-16-2011 09:16 PM

In the cinema it was great, but doesn't work at home, especially not for those who are trying to multi-task

What I really got into was noticing how the movie was shot in terms of planing the shots and how they were implemented. The way they shot scenes from point A to point B and beyond was done very well. Pretend you have a camera in your hand, step into the production crew's shoes and imagine what you would have to do to duplicate each scene. The timing and framing was pretty ingenious.

Does your attention span allow you to watch an entire movie before passing judgement on the internet, like some kind of intellectual critic? Really, your review is very smart and insightful.

You're probably right about me passing judgement before I even watched it. There was so much hype when it came out I really was expecting something fantastic in the first 18 seconds. By 23 seconds, I was done. :-)

Caligari 06-17-2011 10:16 AM

i wouldnt put it in a league with The Thing (either version) or Alien (the original, not Aliens)
but Cloverfield is a damn good giant monster movie, which is all it is.
The creature is great, the little creatures are well done, and although i generally dont like cgi the effects were sparse enough to be sufficiently realistic.

all of these "docu-horror" films will always owe a huge debt to Blair Witch Project, but other than that i thought Cloverfield was pretty original.

Scott McD 06-17-2011 03:02 PM

I've had very mixed feelings about Cloverfield ever since i went to see it in the movie theatre.

1. The camera was TOO DAMN SHAKY! A little movement to show it was shot from a first person perspective would have been fined and people would have got the idea. Blair Witch Project got this right. Cloverfield got it wrong. People in the cinema were actually being sick. I have it on Blu-Ray but i can't even watch it because it just hurts my head.

2. Most of the "interesting" parts of the movie, people didn't even notice, and probably still don't know about them. (the clip of the satellite landing into the sea).

3. The characters i just didn't care about. I wanted them all to die anyway.

It was still an "ok" movie, but could have been so much better... :2 cents:

twistyneck 06-17-2011 07:32 PM

Cloverfield was indeed a shitty movie but it could have been awesome. I hate movies where it is supposed to have been shot as it happens with a video camera. The monster was pretty good but when I pay to see a monster movie, I want to see the fucking monster, not characters that I don't care about. Also, as someone else pointed out, where did the monster come from? Shouldn't that have been mentioned? So it was stupid and painfully so but with some better editing and directing it could have been pretty good.

Agent 488 06-17-2011 07:39 PM

it's best to watch a movie after the mass media million dollar mind control hype has wound down, then you can judge whether it is garbage or not, not be a puppet.

brassmonkey 06-17-2011 07:47 PM

im watching it 2 nite! :)

2MuchMark 06-17-2011 11:29 PM

Why don't you try paying attention to the movie instead of dividing your time between it and your computer?

Cloverfield is an excellent horror / sci-fi / monster / disaster movie. You would probably really like it if you watch it with the sound up, lights down, and computer OFF.

John-ACWM 06-18-2011 12:05 PM

So I am going to avoid it.

brassmonkey 06-18-2011 12:14 PM

i liked the movie nuff said :)
