F.B.I. Raids Data Center, Seizes Servers, Knocks Big Sites Offline

For reasons unknown, the F.B.I. raided a data center and seized several servers, causing known online brands, including Pinboard and those in the Curbed network (like our friends at Eater), to go offline.

NY Times' Bits blog says that the data center is owned by DigitalOne, a Swiss company operating in the U.S.

This happened in our datacenter that we run most of our operations out of. What a small world. I know the company who manages the servers for "true records" both companies are owned by. Russians!

Needless to say I am not really surprised. I'll see exactly how much stuff was removed they claim "racks" but we didn't really notice anything gone.

And yes it was related to CP.. Usually when the FBI gets involved they notify/subpoena the host/owner of the IPs.. If you don't "respond" or act with in the law.. this is what happens instead of turning over a single server they come with a truck and just literally rip every thing out of the racks.

Bingo. There's nothing Swiss about this company.

If the FBI shut down servers that have nothing to do with this, there's gonna be some legal issues. That's like having a warrant for one house, and searching every house on the street.

It must be right if the F.B.I. is doing it. Even for reasons unknown, they're bigger and more just than me or you; so what they're doing... it has to be right.

I was thinking the same thing. It will be interesting to find out what they were looking for and why they decided to they needed to take as much hardware as they did.

If your neighbor is selling drugs, they don't invade your house too just to be safe.

No, there wont be any legal issues actually. They more than likely executed a search warrant and since they didn't know what servers it was.. mainly because the hosting company flat out failed to response to the fbi's requests they get a court order to seize everything and search it.

MaDalton 06-22-2011 04:49 AM

they were looking for "LulzSec" because of their recent actions, some other servers obviously got in the way.

here's an article in german: http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/web/0...769755,00.html

" Patriot Act " No warrants needed and if you plan to question them or call them on it. your next.

No.

It's not like searching every house; they had a warrant for a facility and
they only raided one facility; not every facility on the block.

Any legal issue will put the fault on the ISP for not responding to the FBI and
pointing to the exact server that needed to be disconnected.

You know what I mean.

Every then-illegal action taken by Richard Nixon that forced him to resign is now 100% legal under the patriot act.

JamesGw 06-22-2011 10:49 AM

I wonder what they were going after. This is really starting to get ridiculous, though.

onwebcam 06-22-2011 12:12 PM

Word is this is all over copyright infringement and it was more than one D.C. they raided.
