Anybody ever been to the Koh Chang area in Thailand?
pros/cons?
Looking into the area atm for a small break end of September, beginning of October.. |
I am guessing you mean the island ?
Do it. It's a less developed than Samui and as beautiful. Depending on where you stay it can be alot cheaper, I have found some really nice guesthouses there for next to nothing. As far as pros and cons go it really depends what you are looking for, I'd say it's pros are that it's less developed than Samui, I can't really think of any cons, it's a great place to relax and unwind. If you want an island retreat and want to party to the max go to Samui, if you want to unwind and still want a Thailand island experience go to Koh Chang. |
me luv u l0ng tym!
Thailand is beautiful |
I was there, and i can say it is absolutely best area in Thailand if you want rest, real rest:)
No so many "thai girls",not so much party etc, really beautfull nature, new hotels and rest:) |
I am not looking for party places

Roald,
Koh Chang is chill, very nice. Should be great that time of the year. If you're looking for a quiet place, that is a good option. Other islands in the area are Koh Kood, Koh Mak, Ko Lao Ya, and Koh Kut. Also Google some of the places in the south like Koh Tao (excellent diving) or even Koh Lipe or Koh Rawi. Amazing islands. You won't go wrong by staying on some of the less popular islands that are not considered "party zones." It seems every island that is known for a party scenes turns to shit, violence, and scams. |
Dwb, is it doable to do like 2 or 3 islands in 2.5 weeks? If yes which ones would be best. Take into consideration we like nature, snorkling, quit beaches and no loud mouth tourists.

Koh Tao is amazing if you like diving, if you don't it's still a really nice island to visit and relax. |
Koh Chang is great :thumbsup
If you'd like to party, then stay at White Sand Beach, if you want to relax, I would recommend you Khlong Phrao, if you're looking for something in between, stay at Kai Bae or Lonely Beach. Also I would recommend you to take "5 island trip" in any agency - I'm sure you won't regret it. From Koh Chang you can easily get to the nearest islands - Koh Mak & Koh Kood by boat. They are much less developed than Koh Chang though... Between these two I would definitely stay at Koh Kood - it's green, has great beaches with a clean water and there are not so many tourists. Have Fun & Good Luck :thumbsup |

I also suggest what Adult King says, go to one, if you LOVE it, stay a while. If you don't, move on. Then if you find your sweet spot, root and and relax instead of trying to crash course a few islands. The good news is... many of them are close together so you can day trip them instead of packing up and sleeping there. Rent a long tail boat for all day and let the boatman take you all over. If by chance you find the other island better, move. One thing I will advise (unless you're going 5 star with excellent reviews) is don't book your whole stay in one place BEFORE you go. Book your first place for like 2 nights tops. Then spend 1 - 2 days checking out the island to find the perfect place for you. Often you will get there and it will not be so good, as advertised, too noisy at night do to a bar outside, or it smells bad, or your room is "broken" and you get stuck in another and they won't adjust your rate... lots of reasons. Thailand is the land of scams so this gives you a small buffer for any hotel issues. All of these islands are winners, its just a matter if finding the right room / bungalow / house. |
Thanks guys, looks like im sold!!
Will look into all suggestions for surr. |
Thnx dwb, thats what we normally do on our trips. Book for the first few nights only.

Yo Roald, I was there about 6 weeks ago, was my 1st time there, I kinda liked it for a chillout place, it's totally not a party place and aside from a couple live bands on the beach, most shops/restaurants were closed way early, i'd say 10:30pm
Beach was beautiful and water was PERFECT! Perfect temp, really clean and the beach wasn't packed with tourists like Phuket style. I stayed in 3 hotels (I book only for couple days on arrival, and if happy i'll extend, if not, then i'll move, I was not impressed with the hotels I stayed in). I stayed Koh Chang Resort And Spa and 2 others that I forgot the name Anyways, have fun man and if in BKK hit me up lets get some lob moo tod or nam prik kapi :) |

Just look at cheap tickets and than decide where you go.
Can save you a lot $$$$. Suggestions: Penang, Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur. Or the other site, the Perhentian islands. Malaysian people are nicer, not so much back packers parties. Just right for a middle aged couple looking for some romance. |

It's also possible that earlier in the night I stuck my dick in some girl while getting a lap dance and shot a load in her too. There are memory fragments of this so it's a little cloudy. There was also some hot chick I was screwing either in another bathroom or in a hot tub (could be either or both) while Dugmor was banging out another chick on a bed.... no sight of Jscott. Total fucking haze. Fuck, now that I think about it... hey Jscott, that wasn't you I was fucking in the bathroom was it? Serious question. |
Not a Thailand expert, but isn't September/October known for heavy rainfall?
|
Wet season isn't as wet as it sounds, often you'll get heavy rain for an hour in the afternoon and that's it.
Up country can get a bit wet at various times throughout the year, not necessarily only in wet season. My house in Bangkok has only ever seen flooding in March when the big thunderstorms roll in and flood the sub soi. |

As for Koh Chang, I went there in the early 80s to shoot. Great place then, no tourist, no interutions and very quiet. Some beautiful locations. :thumbsup |

Your thread jack is not making sense :thumbsup |
Nice plans Ro! I am keeping my fingers crossed for you that those Thai islands are nothing like the Perhentians and the other Malay islands that Bjorn is suggesting. I heard a lot of good stuff about Koh Lipe (we're thinking about Thailand in Jan/Feb) and was hoping that that is the exact opposite of those CenterParks islands.
|
I stop promoting Malaysia :) Let's hear about it when you made the trip.
We have to decide where to go in Jan/Feb and i like thai massages. |

And there are no CenterPark island, or you must have booked your travel with Neckermann and stay 3 weeks at 1 place. I never do that in those countries. But enough about Malaysia. Schiermonnikoog is also beautifull and only 45 minutes away. |

but the rest doesnt sound very promising so i dont think Malaysia will be on my list :winkwink: |

Speaking of Malaysia, do not hitup Danok if you want to stay away from the sleazy places, WOW, nasty shithole there!!! (border town between southern Thai and northern Malaysia)
Oh, hahha, DWB I know for sure it wasn't my ass you banged! LOL god i gotta see Hang2! MaDalton, come back!!! Also, by the way, Roald there's a really cool waterfall, u walk back about 35minutes in trails then you find it, climb up some rocks and make some nice pics, very not far from the Koh Chang downtown areas, sorry I forgot then name though :( |
i cant afford to go to the Koh Chang area in Thailand...

Excellent advice. Stayed in a "resort" on Koh Chang a few years back and changed hotels immediately. The room smelled of shit, like the mattress was stuffed with it. The next place was perfect. It's been a long time but the place with the shit smelling room was really close to the Ferry pier. |
