how many of you stutter?

I have since I was about 9 years old. I literally sounded like porky pig lol

As I have aged and thankfully as a side effect to state mandated psychiatric/psychological care provided when put in foster care I have been able to curb most of the stutter. However, certain situations (ie: reading from a script, placing emphasis on certain words in situations where it is important to use those specific words and even saying my own name to a stranger) I still stutter quite badly and somewhat howl while trying to force the words out.

I have learned what situations to avoid, what mix of words that make sense together explaining the exact same thing as the unspeakable word and have to practice anything I know will be very difficult to say. To this day I cannot read two sentences out loud from paper or screen without stuttering like a madman though. If it's from memory it's a totally different animal. Practice makes perfect in some cases.

In a call center environment it was hell on high heels for a long time until I was informed it was acceptable to play with the scripting a bit as long as key statement were made in a clear wording. In face-to-face sales I have never ever had any issues except when reciting my own name when answering phone calls or giving out my cell number, which began with '8'.

Just curious to see what other have dealt with this over their lifetime and what silly remedies to hangups anyone has figured out.

I used to stutter badly when I was a kid. Haven't done it in years.

I have a friend who has stuttered since childhood. We took him to an asian whorehouse in NYC one night and got him laid by 5 girls at once. His stuttering honest to God since then has all but disappeared. He says that when he gets nervous and feels it coming on he reflects back to that night and it calms him and helps to control his stuttering.

Sometimes I don't annunciate my words with the vocal veracity I should but I just repeat myself.

I mumble and murmer and slur my speech so badly most people don't have a clue what I'm saying, ever.

I have to really TRY to make myself heard, and then I'm typically very loud which I hate.

When I'm on a mic though MC'ing I can talk very quickly and clearly to the point I have to slow it down so people know what I'm saying, otherwise I sound like Busta Rhymes.

It's weird. If you had a conversation with me in person you'd never know I could be a strip club DJ and be good at it.

I dont stutter as such, but if I am in a nervous social situation, I sometimes find myself using 'stock phrases' to 'fill in the gap' while I think of what to say next...

I think a lot of people do that. I abuse the word "really"... It's just a good tool for formulating better thoughts.

I would think 5 chicks at once would make a man stutter more lol instead of the opposite

+1 except I still do occasionally, Usually when I am stressed out. It just shuts me down and thats how I learned to control it. I begin to try and push the words out too fast and I have to completely stop, take a deep breath or two and then start again slower. It is embarrassing when it happens :Oh crap

I kinda have certain 'phrases' that I can 'trot' out at any point, without thinking... (Kinda rehearsed) Such as...

"Yeah, well... I see... And, I get yah... But... heres the thing... You see... I think... - and... its only my opinion - BUT... In my opinion... I would say that..."
By the time that has 'Tripped off the tongue' I have decided what I really wanna say :)
