SEO: url subfolders and keywords question

im wondering something about url subfolder keywords. Im using a car brand as example for my question...

lets say, i want to rank for 'cars' for my mainpage so i get 'carsinfo.com'.
i also want to rank the subpage about the brand AND the models of these brands.
For these pages i want to rank for 'honda cars' and 'honda civic car'.

when i make the urls like these keywords, is this excessive use of the same keywords? Like this:
carsinfo.com/honda-cars/honda-civic-car/
Here ive got every sub page covered for the desired keyphrases. But car(s) gets repeated 3 times & honda 2

Or should i keep it short like this, where the combined keywords in the total url all form every keyphrase.
carsinfo.com/ - 'cars'
carsinfo.com/honda/ - 'honda cars'
carsinfo.com/honda/civic/ - 'honda civic car'

which is better purely for SEO? I dont want to win the beauty prize (obviously the short url is prettier but leave that out of the equation), just want the one that will benefit seo the most. Im curious what you guys will have to say!

carsinfo.com/ - 'cars'
carsinfo.com/honda/ 'honda cars'
carsinfo.com/honda/civic/ 'honda civic car'

I would do the above.

I'd do

carsinfo.com/honda
carsinfo.com/honda/civic-cars

i just did several searches in google for the keyphrases i want to rank for and in every search the long url structure with the keyword repetition like this example:
carsinfo.com/honda-cars/honda-civic-car/
are all above sites who have the short version. hmm...

Well, Meta Title is what Google puts all the weight on so that needs the most thought.

But I'd do

carsinfo.com/honda
carsinfo.com/honda/civic-car

because it's short, not overly stuffed with keywords, but still tackles the keywords you're looking for. Bigger is not always better.

I don't know what your finding, but I see lots of short urls and even dynamic urls searching for "honda civic car"

Again, Meta Titles are what needs the most thought. That's what makes or breaks your rankings.

yeah i know, but im not searching for the example term. But the short one should make sense, i do agree with that.

hm, ive always understood from various sources that google doesnt take any meta tags into consideration for ranking. Yes, they do show the meta description (if you have one) in your google result, but in my understandings thats the only thing it is being used for - not for ranking.

the title tag is one of THE most important things in on-page seo.

i'd do something like this:

carsinfo.com/cars/honda/civic.html - title tag: "honda civic car infos"

don't forget to interlink all pages (breadcrumb navigation).

Obsess over your keyphrase until you can't make up your own mind and resort to asking GFY what you should do...

Oh, wait...

So, I make a facial site:

www.whateverfacialsite.com

I want to niche it up:

www.whateverfacialsite.com/ebonyfacials/

I want to drill down on that niche and - perhaps - fish for some longtail terms:

http://www.whateverfacialsite.com/eb...ghettogaggers/
http://www.whateverfacialsite.com/eb...acksonblandes/

Personaly, I would go:

www.mysuperdupercarsite.com/honda/
www.mysuperdupercarsite.com/honda/civic/
http://www.mysuperdupercarsite.com/h...oflcoptercars/
http://www.mysuperdupercarsite.com/h...hittyvehicles/

P.S. I don't know if those links lead to an actual website or not. But whatever....

yeah, im doing breadcrumb nav, but you say the title tag is one of the most important things... I know the <title>Title</title> is, but PornStarToys is talking about the meta title tag, which is new to me that that is also very important - i never heard that before.

The longer you take, the less you get done.

nico-t 07-14-2011 09:39 AM

true;) i already went with the short url structure... seems more logical.

MediaGuy 07-14-2011 09:44 AM

Just remember that repetition is bad, especially at Google, so do a general-to-specific, breadcrumb, drill-down link structure that avoids repeating whatever word/s.

:D
