Took a road to somewhere new (pics)

Last May I met up with a cousin that is 13 years younger than me, so I never knew him. He lives in TN and I was in IN, so we met up for lunch in KY. A few weeks later he asked if I was interested in doing a road trip with him. Since I was going to be in IN for the 4th of July it was decided that I would fly to goodgirl's and he would drive up from TN. From there we traveled north and west to places I had never been and beyond. The goal, have fun and be at LAX by 10 PM tonight (I made it).

I am slowly but surely getting the pics up, so here is what I have so far.

Day one, we headed north to Milwaukee then off towards MN..

We woke up in Reedsburg, WI by Wisconsin Dells. We checked out dome of the sights then headed up to La Crosse for some more sights. We crossed the Mississippi and cruised along it up to Minneapolis. From there we headed to Fargo, ND. Really not sure who is counting the lakes in MN. 10,000? Could have fooled me. You can find day two pics here. Here are some samples.

That is the reason we started off in Milwaukee. I was told to check them out. I got their Food Wars winning burger. It was okay. The cheese on it was the best part.

These guys really got an attitude but eventually lined up to pose for a shot.

It was a very fun trip. Day four ended in Cody, WY. We discovered there were very few rooms available due to the nightly rodeos they have June 1 thru August 31. When my cousin heard the word "rodeo" we were off like a flash to the Cody Nite Rodeo.

I have driven that 500+ times. :) Welcome to Minn and my neck of the woods Brotha. :) Nice pics. Very much looks and feels like Minnesota. Very nice.

Most of our lakes are in the north up near Lake of the Woods. But you went by a few. :) You missed the heat. 97-100 last 3 days. :) Actually not bad on a bike.

Vjo 07-20-2011 05:29 PM

this beautifully catches the peace of Minnesota

http://www.gotbaddog.com/wp-content/...rlake_3663.jpg

Freeport is the belly of MN. Another 3 miles toward Melrose you went by New Munich and the infamous New Munich Ballroom that was burned down by Arson. This is where I once out ran a posse for those who read my posts. :)

New Munich into Melrose is where we ditched the posse in a 67 Camaro LT1. :) See my threads I posted the story somewhere. :)

You may have noticed west of Sauk Centre and Alexandria things begin to stretch out. This is really the very beginning of the west.

When you cross the Mississippi going west around Saint Cloud and then another 50 miles west things start turning into the west. Large huge fields. Soon you hit the Dakotas and you are in the west.

You guys have a ton of mosquitoes, Would need a fill faced helmet ;)

We came in to MN at La Crosse (crossed the bridge). We then took 61N along the Mississippi all the way to Minneapolis. We picked up 94 there. We had a lot coming up in MT and WY so we drove a little longer and made it to Fargo. I love how long the suns stays up when that far north.

LOL That is proof we got lakes. :) No, we had a ton of rain this year. But yeah you have to have a can of Cutters mosquito spray in the toolbox if you break down at night. :)

Of course I am old school before cell phones. I have seen em bad as you prob did. They will chew ya up.
Yep always wore a full face or a good fairing on my 1981 Suzuki 750 rice burner. :) Fun bike tho before I sold it. My friend has a Full Hog tho with all the special this and chrome that. :)

Yeah gets dark about 10:00 at the earliest on June 21.

Summers are short but intense and as hot as anywhere at times. But only for a short time. Tomorrow the winds turn from the NW and Canada which will cool us to 85. We get a break, Down south they dont.

Fall will be in the air on Sept 1. The weather is constantly changing. 4 distinct seasons. Keeps ya hopping.

Vjo 07-20-2011 06:29 PM

Thanks BD will check that right out

I should leave this to the couple guys who live in the city but I cant resist.

The brown pointy building with the long antenna just to the left of the far left green sign is the Foshay Tower about 30 stories. It was once the tallest bldg when my grandpa took me up to the 30th floor outside lookout in about 1971.

You could go outside and all you had were some bars. The lookout was way up where it starts to pyramid at top. It was only 30 stories but really freaky being outside.

Now the IDS Center, left of center with two large antennas is about 55 stories built in the late 70s. I think it's one of the tallest buildings west of the Miss.

http://www.gotbaddog.com/wp-content/...polis_4113.jpg

and it is the same road Mary drove in I believe Highway 12. Prob not 12 but go with me on this. :)

you might just make it after all :)

96ukssob 07-20-2011 06:56 PM

a few years ago I thought it was silly and people were crazy to take trips to the middle of know where and visit old towns. why when there are huge party scenes, big cities and tourists spots... years later I now know why. id love to find a place that gets NO cell reception and stay there for a week :winkwink:

Vjo 07-20-2011 07:41 PM

this is typical of the land along the Wisconsin-Minn border

http://www.gotbaddog.com/wp-content/...river_3963.jpg

i am a lineman for the county :) really nice

http://www.gotbaddog.com/wp-content/...nnhwy_4128.jpg

but now we are going to head west folks down I-94 through Central and then up to NW Minn

this is a typical farm you would see around Freeport :) Dead center of the state. You are now 70 miles out of Mpls and it is getting real rural.

this is going to be exciting trust me lol

http://www.gotbaddog.com/wp-content/...nnhwy_4090.jpg

i dont know about you but I get hungry on the road so lets stop at Charlie's Cafe in Freeport

http://www.gotbaddog.com/wp-content/...oters_3747.jpg

give all my guests Double portions Charlie

http://www.gotbaddog.com/wp-content/...oters_3748.jpg

to be continued.. you are in my neck of the woods now. I was born in Sauk Centre and that is coming up next :)

Lot of stoners and juicers in this neck of the woods.

Why is this going to be exciting? Cause we are going to stop at the next town Melrose and score an oz for $40 of PrimO Greeno. This would be about 1974 tho :) Were all bitching tho cause 3 years earlier it was $15 an O.

I told everyone of the 9 bars in Sauk Centre that Baddog is coming thru with some dudes from the east. 9 Bars pop: 3500

You live out that way? I drive through there all the time on the 94 on my way to Bismarck, ND. I had a run for my expediting company back in February that went from Seattle to Detroit. There was a giant snow and ice storm when I hit ND and the 94 was shut down from Bismarck to Fargo, so I had to stop at a hotel for the night. Long story short I met a girl that worked at the hotel and have been seeing her casually ever since. Whenever I book freight going that way from Ohio I take it myself so I can stop in Bismarck and see her...

I liked the Minneapolis skyline. We plan on trying to do a project that includes skylines of major cities.

Thanks dyna mo, good camera and a ton of practice.

Vjo 07-20-2011 08:20 PM

you have all heard of Sinclair Lewis? Of course not. lol But anyhow he wrote Main Street one of his best sellers in the 30's. He was also born in Sauk Centre. The street that runs the length of the 3 mile town is called Main Street. His house is now a tourist trap.

There is a little creek called Stone Arch where he carved his name into .. see if I can find a pic. This is the true essence of Minn. A little creek in July, some hot dogs, a log cabin we skipped school and built by hand, this was my childhood.

This is peace to me.

anyhow, fact is 94 isnt that exciting which is prob why BD didnt take many pics of the corn fields so we are taking old 52 from Freeport to Alexandria the next 40 miles BD. :) It is a little more exciting. Couple guys are nodding off lol

here is a typical nice farm as we mosey along

http://www.gotbaddog.com/wp-content/...nnhwy_4093.jpg

looking to the other side of the road

http://www.gotbaddog.com/wp-content/...nnhwy_4091.jpg

nothing but corn as we arrive at Sauk Centre

Nothing to do but eat and drink so lets eat again

http://www.gotbaddog.com/wp-content/...a/rjs_3871.jpg

http://www.gotbaddog.com/wp-content/...a/rjs_3873.jpg

back on the road there isnt nothing to see but more corn all the way to Fargo :)

Vjo 07-20-2011 08:47 PM

BUT Sauk Centre has some of the prettiest (Scandinavian) girls around. I drove a hell of a maze as a kid on a cycle (no license yet) to get to a girl on a farm about 7 miles out of town. 125 Honda dirt bike. :) Drove out there the long way to avoid the sheriffs who knew we were only 15 with no license. She made it worth my while tho. :)

Good stuff BD. Glad to have you in the state if only for a bit. :thumbsup

http://www.sqvirtual.com/img/stonearch.jpg

Winter but EXACTLY like Lewis's Stone Arch in Sauk Centre.

Might even be it.

Cool :thumbsup I drove cars from Mpls to Fargo and then back for a while back in the 80s. $50 cash. They drove you down, you drove the car back. Great job. But I had to drive to Mpls to start which was a problem.

There are some truly beautiful women in Minn. Seriously.

I admire you long haul truckers. After I drive about 200 miles I am done. Good money in it tho. I tell guys who are young it is an easy way to make 80K a year but you got to be straight and you got to drive almost everyday.

I don't fuck with semi trucks anymore, too expensive to maintain and too many regulations. I own a few cargo vans and a few Dodge Sprinter vans, which can hold around 5000 pounds of freight and get 20 MPG (they have diesel engines made by Mercedes Benz). With the vans the drivers don't have to keep logs so they aren't DOT regulated and can drive as many miles in a day that they can handle. I usually spend my time in the office on the load boards booking runs for my drivers, but finding good expedite drivers is a bitch so more often than not I end up on the road myself. I can't begin to tell you how much I love it though. I made my living off porn for the majority of my adult life, but it's refreshing to know that I can succeed in something else.

It's funny, but in the last few years I fell in love with some towns that I never would have bothered visiting before. There are parts of Alabama that I love, and I never would have step foot in them if not for my expedite business. The same with Texas, there is so much freight going through the border towns that Texas is like my second home, but I love El Paso, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, etc...
