Does being a subdomain adversely affect search ranking?

Does being a subdomain adversely affect search ranking vs. a site being its own domain?

When competing with other domains in a niche, am I at a disadvantage if that niche site is hosted as a subdmain?

for example: which niche.domain.com fare better as niche.com?

I read somewhere that websites like "niche.domain.com" are perceived as a separate websites.. but imo it's way better to get niche.com :)

It would be better if you got niche.com. But even if you cannot ,then also don't worry it's not an issue for search engine rankings .
