Suppressed Report Found Busted Pirate are good consumers

Quote:

The study, which was carried out by Society for Consumer Research (GfK), found that users of pirate sites including Kino.to did not fit the copyright lobby-painted stereotype of parasites who take and never give back.

This, the survey claims, leads pirate site users to buy more DVDs, visit the cinema more often and on average spend more than their ?honest? counterparts at the box office.

?The users often buy a ticket to the expensive weekend-days,? the report notes.

In the past similar studies have revealed that the same is true for music. People who pirate a lot of music buy significantly more music that those who don?t.

bank robbers use banks too

Agent 488 07-19-2011 10:25 AM

those reports are funny. i don't know anyone whose paid for song since napster. maybe the odd person will buy some itunes.

they are not suppressed, similar ones are released a few times every year.

JamesGw 07-19-2011 10:27 AM

I buy CDs all the time. I just picked up the entire Iron Maiden discography, actually.

true story: a friend of a friend of mine used to run a pretty larger server to supply movies and content. you had to pay a monthly premium and you could download as much as you want.

turns out he got busted and got shafted pretty hard. big fines and did some jail time. wife left him and took his kids. lost his house and his parents wouldnt let him move back in with them.

never was worth it IMO to go through that, so since then Ive always purchased what I wanted. probably spent $1,000's in iTunes and on movies but at the end of the day, I can sleep at night :winkwink:

L-Pink 07-19-2011 10:53 AM

I buy a lot of liquor so stealing some beer is ok now! Great news!

And what made an entire generation suddenly think music and movies were supposed to be free?

you see there was this thing called a radio

it allows you to listen to songs for free so you could decide what songs you liked and buy those artist albums

there are a lot of people like my self who use the torrents just like a radio

and btw live in a country with a piracy tax which totally legalizes that "choice"

Serge Litehead 07-19-2011 11:30 AM

if all people who pirate shit would pay for it - there would be no issue with piracy.
the way it works now 1 pirate out of 1000s pays, distributes it and lets freeloaders ride the bandwagon for free without them paying into it.

Incorrect, that free music was being paid for by the radio station with each song played. The torrent has not paid a royalty for the music they distribute.

Except once you "use the torrent to listen to music like a radio", there is no reason to go out and purchase it since you already have a copy of it that is indistinguishable from the retail version, other than some packaging.

I used to record songs off the radio when I was a kid, but would eventually buy the real cassette since it sounded better and was more convenient, etc. No reason to do that anymore with lossless digital copies.

I see d/l'ing as a natural progression from back in the day when you had a boom box, and when you heard a song you liked, you hit record on your cassette.

do you not understand

canada supreme court has recognized this payment as the fulfilment of a contract that legalizes p2p music trading like the royalties legalize the radio

there are other country which have a wider piracy tax

83% conversion rates prove you wrong

that the percentage of people who were given the song and were convinced to buy a song (including in many cases the song they already got) because of a reason you believe doesn't exist.

Serge Litehead 07-19-2011 02:13 PM

gideon has advanced tracking mechanism, he has all these precise stat numbers, who buys what, who downloads what, who subscribes to what, who licenses what, who converted after, all throughout the world, from all places, sites and people! its 53% legit use of torrents he says, very precise mechanism!

but he can't track who the person was that made illegitimate download based on IP

seeandsee 07-19-2011 02:19 PM

some people pay for stuff even if they are pirates lol :D

i was under the impression cds had way better sound quality than mp3/mp4? owning something via mp3 is no comparison to having it on disk

OT speaking of CDs they are far from top audio quality

sure their may be a little shift because of people sharing beyond the scope of the private tracker (setup properly)

but these were UNKNOWN artist so that shift is minimal at best.

Serge Litehead 07-19-2011 03:09 PM

regarding downloads:
you cannot successfully claim who are legitimate users and who are not.

until there will be some sort of license validating mechanism for all people and all content, your stats are simply pulled out of thin air.

don't even know how the fuck you end up talking about artists in reply to my comment

regarding your 83% in particular:

> that the percentage of people who were given the song and were convinced to buy a song

how can you know this???? lets say there is person X gave song to person Z, they don't report this to anyone, how do you know they shared something and if person Z bought this song after all or not? hows your 83% account for millions people who you have know idea what they share and what they buy and how you correlate this unknown sharing number with buying numbers?

Joshua G 07-19-2011 03:41 PM

laugh out mother fucking loud.

1. you don't understand how to setup a private tracker properly

2. you don't know how to pull the logs off public trackers

3. your too stupid to realize that while an ip address is not a person, it can be counted

4. sales can be counted

5. sales /ip count can give you a percentage.

Radio stations pay royalties to ASCAP and BMI.

You wouldn't be a pirate if you paid royalties.

FLAC and other lossless formats are basically indistinguishable from the original CD. Although it is true a lot of people still download lossy MP3s. But I honestly can't tell too much of a difference between 320 kb MP3's and a CD on fairly decent audio equipment. I am getting older though and did a lot of damage to my ears playing drums when I was a kid.:winkwink:

What a bunch of BS. How do you explain the decline in sales? If 83% of the people that were pirating music out there went out and bought the CD or tracks online afterwards the music industry wouldn't be in the state it is now.

Serge Litehead 07-19-2011 07:26 PM

can you tell me how much torrents pull in bandwidth for tv shows, movies?
how many copyrighted software being downloaded illegally, music and games?
check those particular stats if you have all that setup to check, since you fail to see trackers top lists and what's on there

gather full data, and btw you can't compare bandwidth for video used with anything else.. that why i formulated above first two questions the way I did

then get back to us. so far you're pulling numbers out of nowhere

you were arguing no one would buy because the pirated copy was so good

i am talking about the way i teach musicians to market to pirates

it possible to get 83% rate by giving away the music and asking them the right way to pay if they like it.

admitting to a company even like that, that you have no problem taking stolen music and movies etc is confessing to a crime. I am sure they get honest answers when asking people.

Educate me, when you download Barry Manilow's greatest hits from a torrent site how does the Canadian government make sure he is compensated?
