Dedicated server or vps?
So I got this just now from HostGator:
Hello, I apologize, but I was forced to suspend the site xxxxxxxxxxxxx.com as the sheer number of requests to this script overloaded Apache, causing issues for the rest of the sites on the server. Please be aware that this is not a CPU issue, but a traffic issue. The traffic incoming to this domain is causing Apache to become overloaded with requests, causing other sites on this server to load very slow, and the load to climb on the server. Unfortunately I do not have any specific recommendations for this script, however, in general, you would need to find a way to lower the amount of requests for this domain. We do not believe this to be an attack, as there are no patterns to the traffic. This might also be the right time to upgrade your account to a VPS or a dedicated solution, as your site may have simply outgrown our shared environment. 35,000+ hits in two hours and 150,000+ page views. Whoops, I've only been with them for a day. :upsidedow That was me just messing around, the real traffic would be much higher. So it looks like I will need to go dedicated. Host Gator seems okay, but are there any other good ones out there. Cost and speed are a factor for me, obviously. I am expecting a high amount of traffic, but nothing like College Humour or the big sites. Anyone know of reliable good dedicated servers or could I get away with something like a VPS thing? Like so: http://www.hostgator.com/vps-hosting/ |
Once you pay >$25K a month in server cost then it's time to buy your own equipment and have someone manage your setup. Until that day, rackspace will do nicely.
Something to consider... putting it in the cloud, you only pay for usage and it scales very very well ;) |

Amerinoc is an excellent choice for both VPS and dedicated and they have a pretty good price if you pay quarterly. I have 2 VPS with them which we use mainly to test scripts and we use to bang the server to see how much the server can handle and never found any problem while working on a 20-25k visitors a day range, so they probably will be able to handle more.
This being said, I really doubt you'll find a VPS server that can handle around 500k unique visitors a day and work efficiently, you'll really need a dedicated server, specially if you're using scripts On the other side, Hostgator isn't as good with VPS (and it's pretty expensive for VPS) but has some nice dedicated boxes, not as good as Amerinoc but they're cheaper |

For a managed server, the hosting company does all of that for you. You can email them or file a ticket and say "hey I got a new domain name, here are the website files, please add it" and they will do it for you. |

The OP hasn't posted nearly enough information to be able to provide solid guidance on what type if server would be appropriate. I can make a comment on VPS in general. Although in theory VPS can provide more efficient use of resources, it's very hard to know what you're getting. The limiting factor for most severs in disk io since disks are a thousand times slower than any other part of the server. How many VPS provides specify how many iops you get, or any other useful information about the resources other than drive space and network bandwidth? Partly for that reason, we do VPS as a "half server". The webmaster gets all of the hardware specs just like you would with a dedicated server, and you share that hardware with exactly one other webmaster. |

Many companies offering VPS solutions, only offer a couple configurations, and use VPS to bridge the gap between shared hosting and dedicated hosting, but a VPS server can do so much more, and sites that have a high disk I/O (input/output or "read/write" in laymen's terms) can greatly benefit from a VPS configuration over a dedicated server. We offer VPS plans with Intel Sandy Ridge Quad Core processors, and up to 8192MB of burst RAM (4096MB guaranteed), 160GB of storage (six disk RAID-10). and 10Mbps bandwidth. For as low as $135.99 per month*, you would be very hard pressed to find a similar priced dedicated server that would keep up to the performance of this very-well appointed VPS. http://www.a1websolutions.com/vps.html We also have 4 other popular VPS configurations below this monster, starting at $29.99 per month. All of our VPS are six disk RAID-10, fully-managed, and come with DirectAdmin Control Panel for your convenience, as well as One-Click script installers for common scripts such as Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, PHPBB, and many more! We offer a full 60-Day unconditional money back guarantee, so feel free to discuss your shared, VPS, or dedicated server requirements with us. ----- * 3000 VPS plan prepaid for 12 months (monthly price is $159.99) |
For both of them you may try with no regrets Amerinoc. See my sig.

DatingGameExpert,
Shoot me a message on ICQ. I'm sure we can put something together for you... |
Although not much info has been given, based on what is there I would say go dedicated also. But that is up for discussion as it could be just a higher end VPS without much effort.
Take a look at m3server.com and you can hit me up directly for any questions or solutions to your issue. |
I had this EXACT SAME issue once before,
and I did what your about to do.. and upgraded to dedicated. A dedicated I kept for years and never really used. BUT, it turns out that the problem was from one of my traffic providers, which was causing the apache to overload with "too many visitors at the exact same time", because the traffic was being dumped all at once due to an error, instead of being pieced out. I'm not saying that is your problem, but perhaps there is a slight chance it is. Turns out that I DID NOT need the dedicated server at all, that I just needed to resolve the traffic issue I had loading too many simultaneous users at once. I'm going to go against the grain here and say VPS should be able to cover it unless it's a really heavy script, as I was pushing 15k uniques an hour with no problem. |
Have you consider offloading the heavy lifting to a cloud service in a CDN? CDN's are built specifically for this very problem.
Gartner states most companies are leveraging about 10% of the computing resources available them via their own infrastructure (owned and managed infrastructure is not optimized). Therefore there is huge movement to “cloud” infrastructure so you pay for what you use and nothing more. Further lowering cap X costs and costs surrounding the management of infrastructure. |
