Chipmunk is now the butt of jokes after being caught having a cheeky cigarette in holiday snap

Miss Evans, From Manchester, told The Telegraph: 'We were just leaving the beach when the chipmunk popped up over the beach wall with the cigarette in its mouth. 'It was such an odd sight that I got my camera out and took a photo. It just sat there for a short while and then ran off into a bush.' Chipmunks, otherwise known as Barbary ground squirresl, were introduced to Fuerteventura from North Africa as popular household pets in 1965. Escaping into the wild, the population thrived in a natural environment similar to their homeland - but without the natural predators. Their numbers have increased to an estimated 300,000 and are now a threat to the island?s endemic species.
