I love Magento. We have some installs on our dedicated hosting.com box and some installs on some cheap bluehost servers and they all run without issue. Unfortunately, I cant tell you the specs for the dedicated box, but I will ask one of my coworkers when I can get a hold of him. The one thing I can tell you is that if you use a cheaper solution, magento uses a shitload of tables to do whatever it needs to do, you can only have 2 magento shops on one bluehost plan. I don't know your situation, just throwing that out there. I think I tried 3 on one server for a client and it pretty much broke with some error about the tables etc.

One thing I would suggest you look into is how to speed up magento. There are many things you can do. I don't think it breaks the rules to link to magento's board but i don't know for sure. A google search for speeding up magento will take you where you need to go.

check out themeforest.com for some cheap themes. You go into the admin and theres like 4 spots you type out the name of the theme as long as you have it in the right spot itll pick it up. Sorry to be so vague, I dont have a shop in front of me and haven't built one in a few weeks.

Its easy to skin.
Let me find the article for ya, once you do one, it gets a lot easier.

This is a good article, even though it is for building your own themes, it may give you some more insight on how magento works in general. It goes over where to go in the admin to call your theme as well.

You can manually add items one by one or you can download a csv file with the required tables, enter the items via excel or w.e. and re import it back into your store.

Sorry if it sounds confusing, without the stuff in front of me its hazy and I don't have the ftp or admin info at home since the stores are for clients at an art studio I work for.

Edit: found another article for ya:

Nope. I like Magento but I've still never used it for anything yet...

They have a forum, admins allow users to post their thoughts and ideas without removing them. I can't link you tho, I'm sorry. :)
