Thankyou once again. Basically what I want to do is have a small website where a small select group of people can post and comment on newslinks on a very niche subject. This is why I was looking at Pligg. I dont need a lot of features and im not going to be selling memberships. Im not sure social engine is right for that? I thought Pligg looks right, but my main concern was if it is hackable or secure and how much system load it uses.

The two free social networking platforms which seem to have some level of adoption are Pligg and Oxwall. The problem with these is that there is no easy road between installation and having a production site. Each has it's own security issues which are relatively simple to mitigate if you understand what you are doing. Make a mistake with security and your whole site and server could be compromised. Both Pligg and Oxwall require a certain amount of work to get up and running.
This is why I would recommend Social Engine. It really depends how much your time is worth. Do you want to be hacking away at things continually or do you just want to get up and running ?
Another option of course is PhpFox which has some market acceptance. You can also run the free version of Dolphin. However nothing I have seen or used comes close to the usability and flexibility of Social Engine
