Pligg Script?

Anyone used the Pligg Scrip? What are your opinions on it? Is it stable and secure?

Pligg as a social networking platform is ok providing you have the technical expertise and coding ability to fix issues yourself and to keep your site secure.

A much better, open source but not free, social networking platform is Social Engine which has a wide user base, a mature code base and excellent support.

I have used Dolphin, Social Engine and Pligg in testing and only found Social Engine to be worth using on a production site.

Thankyou, what is your opinion on Dolphin? Is it better or worse then Pligg?

I have used Dolphin on a production site, I have two licenses available if you want to buy them, it is ok however you need decent hardware as it is somewhat bloated and it is not as user friendly and consistent in user experience as Social Engine. There is too much missing from Dolphin's core that you need to make up in 3rd party add ons. If you want to run anything other than a free social network then Dolphin is not recommended.

Social Engine has so many advantages over Dolphin and Pligg. Membership billing is built right into the Social Engine core, so you don't need to add a plugin which may break in order to sell site memberships. It also has extensibility and well commented code.

Social Engine uses a plugins system for add ons which protects existing code from damage, whereas addons for Dolphin and Pligg generally modify core code.

The path between installation and opening your site is the simplest with Social Engine.

Thankyou once again. Basically what I want to do is have a small website where a small select group of people can post and comment on newslinks on a very niche subject. This is why I was looking at Pligg. I dont need a lot of features and im not going to be selling memberships. Im not sure social engine is right for that? I thought Pligg looks right, but my main concern was if it is hackable or secure and how much system load it uses.

The two free social networking platforms which seem to have some level of adoption are Pligg and Oxwall. The problem with these is that there is no easy road between installation and having a production site. Each has it's own security issues which are relatively simple to mitigate if you understand what you are doing. Make a mistake with security and your whole site and server could be compromised. Both Pligg and Oxwall require a certain amount of work to get up and running.

This is why I would recommend Social Engine. It really depends how much your time is worth. Do you want to be hacking away at things continually or do you just want to get up and running ?

Another option of course is PhpFox which has some market acceptance. You can also run the free version of Dolphin. However nothing I have seen or used comes close to the usability and flexibility of Social Engine
