It'd take a lot of energy for a complete wipe out. I think a lot of our infrastructure has RF shielding.

pretty common happenings for the sun to say the least. space.com goes ape shit anytime something like this happens. They wonder why kids have no interest in space anymore... haha

every 250,000 years or so Earth's North and South poles switch sides, we're due one any time now. this process isn't instantaneous. when this happens there is also a period when global electromagnetic shield is very low or not present (for a few years or decades).

Here is a story about how solar storms could knock power down in some areas for months or even years sometime this decade.
