Looking to buy a handgun.. (HELP)
 

need some help/advice in picking up a nice handgun.. (no budget)

I am looking for something with the best accuracy and reliability..

let's just say in a situation where the wife has to use it.. she's panicked, shaking, and still be able to take one shot and that one shot solves the problem.

Glock 40 cal would be a good choice.

For small arms and easy to use, I would recommend the Walther PPK. Walther, Sig and Glock make what i think are the best hand guns out there however, the Ruger makes a good gun for the value. Kimber Arms is a good gun but the price is a bit out of line and is more for the look than the function.

The Baretta Px4 is a great small 40 cal as I would not go as far as a 9MM or .45 for your wife.

Make sure you also get one with a rail to mount a light. For home protection, a light is key except on a .308 you wont get a lot with rail space.

I use my PPK as my canceled carry arms and a 9 MM next to the bed but for those front door surprises, I prefer a Mossberg 500 Persuader.

Sig Sauer, HK, or CZ, around a .40 should be good.

Sig Sauer all the way, I'm a big P226 fan as I like the full sized. My personal favorite is the P226 X-Five Tactical... If you want accuracy, it really doesn't get any better than that. It only comes in a 9mm (the X-Five) but it's a fantastic gun.

Honestly though it's all about personal preference. I hate Glocks, they feel like plastic pieces of junk in my hand but a lot of people love them. Nothing wrong with that they're definitely reliable.

The best thing you can do is find a local range that has a good rental selection and go down and fire them all. Different people have different hands and prefer a different feel as to how it's weighted.

There ain't a god damned gun on the whole fucking planet that will help anyone who hasn't got the nerve or the training to use one properly..

If she's going to panic and go hysterical when she goes into fight or flight, she's more likely to pick up a manslaughter charge when she hits everyone BUT the attacker.. She's also more likely to FREEZE and have the perp use the weapon on HER

No one should ever have a weapon if they're the type who panics or goes hysterical... You should AT LEAST get her some kind of training

Think accuracy/reliability of HER .. first .. there is no accuracy or reliability of a crazy hysterical person. Even with the most accurate reliable weapon on earth.

training will come first! that's no doubt.. no matter what, panic will always be there during the unexpected.. (imo)

but, the best gun for you is the one that you can shoot accurately with out really concentrating.. a gun that you just have a natural feel for...

True that Glock has put out some pretty cheesy guns lately as has Ruger and even SW but they also have some pretty good stuff there as well. However, Sig and Walther don't have a bad gun in their line as far as I can tell.

I had a Walther PPK and it was way too small for my hands so watch out for that. I have owned several semi-auto handguns but actually prefer a 357 mag because you will never have to worry about jamming. What you want is stopping power and from what I understand a 125 grain 357 is one of the best. One gun I could never shoot a good pattern with was a 40 cal S&W. I do like the Glock 40 cal and also many of the Sigs regardless of caliber.

Last I remember you guys are in burbank/glendale? theres a range in burbank that you can go with your wife and try out the guns that they have, glocks, springfieldxds, sigs etc

IMHO, the Ruger is not a good choice or a comfortable gun to shoot though. The S&W 638 is the exact gun I would suggest based on the OP. :2 cents:

EDIT: Yes, there is a lot to be said for shooting a variety of guns before you buy. However, common sense dictates that there is no need to shoot a full size Springfield .40 based on the OP.

Oooh! I just bought a Sig Sauer P220r 8mm version and its VERY NICE. Accurate and I love it!

Those hammerless revolvers would be a good choice. Or any good revolver in .38. Hammerless have advantages for wear and carry and purse carry. The one disadvantage is they have to be kept loaded for reasonably quick use - so consider that.

The macho boys here will laugh, but I think a .22 is a good choice for a womans gun and general purpose gun. Just teach her to keep pulling the trigger until it's empty. She is more likely to not fear using it after practice.

.380 autos are also a reasonable choice.

Another option often recommended for women is a light breech loading shotgun.

Any of these gun choices are also a good option to have available in a man's set of guns.

In a perfect world we would clone women like that and all of them would be packing heat. There would be next to zero crime. Kind of like the place I grew up. EVERYONE HAD GUNS and you almost never heard of violent crime.

My daily carry is a Glock 23. I know grown men who whine like little girls because it hurts their hands when they shoot it. Not a chance in hell I would let my wife shoot it. I would let her shoot my Glock 22 but only because she may be able to get a little better grip on it. However, IMHO, a full size handgun is not a good choice for most inexperienced female shooters, especially one chambered in anything over a 9mm. :2 cents:

These poeple that are posting about getting an auto aren't getting the OP. A revolver doesn't jamb because it's been sitting in a purse, you don't have to cock it, just aim in the right direction and pull the trigger.

Having said that the absolutely best thing you can buy her is LOTS of training. More than you think she will need. The abily to shoot accurately in a high stress situation is the most important thing BY FAR

Take the class. 9mm used to be very popular. Then the slightly larger .40 cal took over as the "in" caliber, leaving lots of nice 9mm you can get for good prices. A have a Glock 9mm, which is what most of the cops carried until quite recently.

I used to carry a Kel-Tec 9mm, which is a less expensive weapon that is similar to the Glock in many ways. See http://thektog.org for the Kel Tec forum I ran until last month.

Btw, take a class. Then practice as often as possible. Making the decision to draw a weapon, then to fire that weapon, are two things you absolutely have to do correctly. "Oops" is not allowed, so become as proficient as possible.

I carry the Glock 23 .40, but for ease of use a traditional revolver should be preferred. Hammerless is mainly for concealed carry to help prevent you from shooting yourself on the draw.

And add in training, of course, and practice.

Federal makes some good law enforcement ammo, too, but use some cheaper stuff for practice.

The training is more important than the weapon.

For women? Probably a 22 cal, but 1 shot won't solve the problem. the fact that she has a pistol is power enough.

Higher the caliber, higher the kickback.

That's a good point.. I can't say that even I am exactly casual in a game on situation :thumbsup It definitely will help if, as others have said, she has plenty of experience handling and firing the gun.

You guys aren't being terribly realistic with all this training talk.

It's true, a woman should get training, but with most women it's impractical to expect it.

You will often be lucky to get her to go to a range and fire it once.

And if she has a bad experience firing it she is likely to become gunshy.

Yeah, sure, there are women that will take to gun handling training and enjoy it, but they aren't typically the rule.

None of my wives or girlfriends could get all that interested in training and practice, despite the fact that I enjoy shooting. I had the best luck with dry-firing practice at home.

is a shotgun an alternative solution? there are some really good small, light models out there that might safer to use or maybe stun gun?

Stun guns and consumer tasers are fine to own, but not really a substitute for a gun. If she won't have a gun or if there are kids to consider, get a consumer taser sure. Better than nothing. May not stop an attacker, but may scare off a percentage.

Or get a taser, hand stunners, AND a gun or guns. And pepper spray, hidden about.

Any weapon has a chance of being used against it's user, but, tasers are unlikley to kill your kid.

Shotguns have good qualities, but they are heavy slow and inconvienient and likely to induce gun fear in a woman user. But, they are intimidating as fuck. And simple.

The problem is deciding what kind to get that she will accept and be able to use in an emergency. And you have to figure out where it will be kept for emergency use, will it be kept loaded or unloded, locked, will kids ever be able to access it, on and on.

Those questions are also important for handguns, but a shotgun cant be kept in a drawer.
