SAN TAN VALLEY, AZ - Authorities say a teen was badly injured in a lawn mower accident Thursday in San Tan Valley.

According to Pinal County Sheriff's spokesman Elias Johnson, three fingers of the 14-year-old boy were cut off when he stuck his hand under the deck of a running lawn mower.

The teen's fingers were recovered and immediately put on ice, Johnson said.

But an aunt of the boy told ABC the fingers were too badly damaged to be reattached.

Dispatchers received a call around 4:15 p.m. from a home near Hunt Highway and Gary Road when a neighbor said the teen had jumped over a backyard fence asking for help after he was injured.

Johnson said when deputies arrived they were unable to turn off the mower using the kill switch.

A deputy had to disconnect a wire from the spark plug to the engine to turn the machine off, he said.

The teen was airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital where surgeons tried to reattach the fingers.

Johnson said the teen was alert and conscious through the ordeal and that he was home alone at the time.

His next door neighbor Enrique Vasquez told ABC that the teen jumped the block wall in between their yards to find help. Vasquez then called 911.

"It was very bloody," he said. "He was very calm though. He just kept saying that it burned."

The victim's parents were located and headed to the hospital.

Johnson said it was unclear why the teen reached under the running mower.

"It is crazy," said Vasquez. "I hope he is ok."

I saw a guy lose his arm to a mulcher in 2001 while I was in Essex, a spray of red and brown was all there was on the back of the trailer the mulcher was feeding in to.

And the Darwin award goes to..... Once in the supermarket.. I was ordering deli meat and the kid who was using the slicer apparently forgot if he had turned it on. So guess how he tested? The kid just grabbed his finger and stared at it, apparently waiting for someone else behind the deli counter to notice . As soon as I saw the blood fly up the wall.. I knew I was not making sandwiches that day.

Surely this kid is mentally retarded.

I wonder if it was a toro lawnmower. I just bought one with the button kill switch by the push controls and it shit out after 3 weeks. P.O.S. lawnmower.

I damaged part of my left index finger in a film splicing machine. I have about 7/8ths the width of a fingernail still. Luckily(?) the part that got me was also at about 300 degrees, so it hardly bled at all, it just cauterized instantly. And it was in a darkroom and the machine had me pinned there until it completed it's melting cycle. Few seconds in the pitch dark that seemed like much longer.
If the company had two nickels to rub together I might have sued.

We need a government ban on lawnmowers.

Just ban everything IMO.
