States looking into online gambling to plug budget holes

It?s an idea gaining currency around the country: virtual gambling as part of the antidote to local budget woes. The District of Columbia is the first to legalize it, while Iowa is studying it, and bills are pending in places like California and Massachusetts.

But the states may run into trouble with the Justice Department, which has been cracking down on all forms of Internet gambling. And their efforts have given rise to critics who say legalized online gambling will promote addictive wagering and lead to personal debt troubles.
I never understood why the government was so against online gambling other than it'd piss off their corporate overloads in the gambling biz.

State based will actually suck unless it's not restricted by state. One of the big lures of playing online is the massive player pools available from around the world.

NY is looking to allow brick and mortar, non-indian companies to set up shop.

That would be HUGE.

Hm maybe it's time to set up some poker (affiliate) sites? :)

Yeah, there's not that much competition in gambling. :upsidedow

Now that everyone wants to cut social programs for low income people, they'll have no choice but to gamble away their last remaining pennies in hopes of hitting the jackpot.

I know state lotteries were suppose to pay for schools and education and everyone knows that American schools are like futuristic wonderlands, so I'm sure this will work out even better.

I have nothing against gambling, but it's a stupid way to raise revenue.

For fear that it will compete with the state-sanctioned Lottos? Now that is a real gambling rip off ...

I lived in Fla., GA., and S.C. And each of those states put in lotteries that were going to make millions for the schools. (in South Carolina they actually shut down the billion dollar a year video poker industry there to do the state lottery and lost millions in tax revenue)

The results? Well just like ALL governments do...they all raised spending levels on everything else. And all that lottery money got spent on bullshit that lined the politicians pockets and the schools still sucked. :(

Online Gambling and Pot... fucking no brainer. All the black market money would solve the dept problem

The bricks and mortar casinos probably arent too happy about that. It will seriously dilute their business.

That's what I thought...but instead they are pushing for it here in Vegas. They are convinced that their brand names will pull the most business online because of customer trust. And they're probably right.

People who want to come to Vegas for the experience still will come here. And they will now get to get their hands on the millions of people who never will get to come to Vegas too.

The more way they can think of to tax people that are oblivious to house odds and probability of outcomes, the better. I would rather they take everyone elses money, instead of mine :)

They also recognize that even actually online gambling/poker will become legal and the casinos want in on the ground floor before they get sideswiped.

There is no comparing online poker and real poker though. Online poker has created a new breed of poker players, exploding the "sport." It's like the PGA investing in kids golf programs.

Because it was all non US companies. The US saw no taxes from it and gambling in the US brick & mortar places went down..

I would think it would help their business. What is stopping a b&m (besides the government) from opening an online casino and benefiting from their brand name ?

I think that would be legal — they are regulated by a state commission. e.g., NEVADA GAMING COMMISSION. Maybe they plan to (for years now :upsidedow ).
