great site

wow, i was alive in 1970 and had no idea that this song was from that long ago.

it was on the soundtrack of a little known teen movie called Over the Edge which was Matt Dillon's first movie, I thought the song was from that movie.

Artist: The Five Stairsteps
Song: O-o-h Child
Year: 1970

Vendzilla 08-22-2011 11:22 AM

I think the number one of all time is Spirit in the Sky from Norman Greenbaum

Not sure you can count that... that album had several platinum hits. I know because my college roommate was a producer on that record. (Dust Brothers, Tone Loc's first record...) are you forgetting "Wild Thing" and "I got it goin' on" which were both huge hits on there as well.

70's kids remember this?

Once in a while I'll hear this chorus in a TV show or something and it still cracks me up. Plus, didn't the Senate have hearings on banning 2 Live Crew..lol. Now that shit seems tame.

And The Winner IS!!!

A 5th of Beethoven

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Fifth_of_Beethoven

Quote:

The song when released entered the Hot 100 at number 80 on May 29, 1976, and took 19 weeks to reach number 1, where it stayed for one week. Early in 1977, it was licensed to RSO Records for inclusion on the soundtrack to the movie, Saturday Night Fever. "Fifth" was released in 1976 becoming Murphy's best known work and his only Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, where it reached the #1 position for one week. It also went to number 10 on Billboard's Black Singles chart in the same year.

In the US? That's more than likely what VH1 would reference. I doubt many people even know who they are, and if they do...it's because of Tainted Love.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_Cell

Pretty impressive 10 million albums sold worldwide, one hit wonder status in the US or not.

3. Come On Eileen - Dexys Midnight Runners

Dexys Midnight Runners had some great hits before this, in fact the album prior to this Searching for the Young Soul Rebels was really good and songs like Geno were big hits in the UK.

This list sees things from an American perspective I suppose.

Yes when we say 1 hit wonder we are referring to USA. And by 1 hit means only 1 song to hit the top 40.

list is BS. for example #91. Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant. He also had a top 40 hit in the US with Romancing the Stone. Didn't VH-1 do any research?

She had 3 top 10 hit including two #1s. How is that a 1 hit wonder?

Socks 08-22-2011 02:27 PM

There's a good one, local band from Hamilton here

Oh What a Feeling by Crowbar.. My dad used to know the drummer Sonnie, we'd see him sometimes at the Royal Winter Fair in the 80's.

redwhiteandblue 08-22-2011 02:39 PM

I reckon the greatest one hit wonder in Pop Muzik history is actually called Pop Muzik by that well known artist M

New York London Paris Munich everybody talk about pop muzik.

Shoobydooby do op.

Pop pop shoo op.

MaDalton 08-22-2011 02:47 PM

that VH-1 list is only US, some entries are ridiculus considering they have careers spanning over decades with millions of records sold - like Nena or Falco

PornMD 08-22-2011 02:48 PM

It's tough to define a one-hit wonder, because most of what people think are one-hit wonders are artists/groups that had one hit that was a much bigger hit than their others, whether their others reached top 40 or not. I'm not sure that's necessarily a bad definition of it - consider that the bulk of their popularity centered around one hit.

It's tough though when considering global popularity because as some have pointed out, some of these groups were hugely popular in the UK but "one hit wonders" in the US.

redwhiteandblue 08-22-2011 02:55 PM

Fiddy one hit wonders.
