wow, i was alive in 1970 and had no idea that this song was from that long ago.

it was on the soundtrack of a little known teen movie called Over the Edge which was Matt Dillon's first movie, I thought the song was from that movie.

Not sure you can count that... that album had several platinum hits. I know because my college roommate was a producer on that record. (Dust Brothers, Tone Loc's first record...) are you forgetting "Wild Thing" and "I got it goin' on" which were both huge hits on there as well.

Pretty impressive 10 million albums sold worldwide, one hit wonder status in the US or not.

Dexys Midnight Runners had some great hits before this, in fact the album prior to this Searching for the Young Soul Rebels was really good and songs like Geno were big hits in the UK.

This list sees things from an American perspective I suppose.

that VH-1 list is only US, some entries are ridiculus considering they have careers spanning over decades with millions of records sold - like Nena or Falco

It's tough to define a one-hit wonder, because most of what people think are one-hit wonders are artists/groups that had one hit that was a much bigger hit than their others, whether their others reached top 40 or not. I'm not sure that's necessarily a bad definition of it - consider that the bulk of their popularity centered around one hit.

It's tough though when considering global popularity because as some have pointed out, some of these groups were hugely popular in the UK but "one hit wonders" in the US.
