Windows 7?

Allright guys, I'm officially on Windows 7. I upgraded from Vista to 7 64bit to be able to go above 4gb on the RAM. What's the big deal about Windows 7? I don't see much of a difference between this and Vista....

Yngwie 08-24-2011 07:32 PM

The main difference is it actually runs better and much more stable. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been.

sounds good, I'll find out when I work tomorrow...

johnny o 08-24-2011 07:47 PM

i agree with yngwie

Darkhorse 08-24-2011 08:12 PM

it is more stable and more user friendly, you will get used to it pretty quickly the learning curve isn't hard at all.

Wow, really? Linux has supported big memory for over a decade.
I knew Windows was about a decade behind on security, just starting to experiment with mandatory access control, but I didn't realize they were that far behind on hardware support. Do you guys still have to bring the whole system down just to update a desktop app? I remember in Win95 I had to reboot about three times just to update IE.

sandman! 08-24-2011 08:24 PM

there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows you need 64bit to run over 3.25 gigs of ram.

yes windows still sometimes need a reboot usually once every 1-2 months for updates.

naw it's not like that.

Only thing that has ever asked for a reboot was a large update or antivirus software installation.

A lot of win7's core is buil from unix. It's not that they couldn't make windows as secure, they just couldn't make access control easy for the end user to do anything with in a gui environment. Even linux distros still have shortcommings that way. Lets fae it though, windows users are mostly scared to death or anything that isn't wrapped in a gui. As am I. I can't stand having to do anything outside a UI.

marlboroack 08-24-2011 08:31 PM

Bump for windows 7, check the windows 8 beta. Totally bitchin.

V_RocKs 08-24-2011 08:46 PM

Less bullshit asking for whether or not something is OK... stable.. networks seem to work better.

Vista has crashed on this machine, well, never. I think it might have crapped out once in 2008, but once Cakewalk updated Sonor and EMU updated their drivers (late 2008 or so) I have not had a problem.

I have never been blue-screened using Vista. Not once. Sorry to disappoint.

raymor 08-24-2011 10:11 PM

Funny thing. Right after posting that I got a call to go fix a Windows box. BHOs preventing printing and crashing IE. Our Windows guy couldn't be there. I updated IE and guess what - it forced a reboot. I guess things haven't changed that much since Win95.

Not Impressed with the 'eye candy' FAIL

I just built a new dual boot AMD Phenom? II 4 Core, 16 GB RAM, 2x1TB HDD.

It dual boots into Windows 7 and Debian LINUX 6.2

The Windows 7 is a joke, 3x slower than the Debian, total junk ... I just wanted a Windows stand alone o/s for some specific applications for work and maybe for Netflix as it requires Silverlight (MicroCrap paid them off I guess ? proprietary programming).

Its not the cost of the Windows CD, I get them OEM, it's the overall stability of the Win platform ? still sux as far as I am concerned ? point and click toy ...

Windows is a malignancy ... Stuff it Ballmer ...

Sid70 08-24-2011 11:44 PM

Actually having Windows 7 raised huge doubts about iOS being so exceptional.

Unless you're gaming... [insert favorite flavor of linux here] + vmware/virtualbox + windows client = profit.

Personally, I use a derivative of LMDE. Debian squeeze base install on encrypted lvm with Linux Mint gnome theme... lovely stuff right there.

Though, I used to run Mac OS X on this box but no matter what edits I made to my dsdt, it ran hotter than it should have been...

nico-t 08-25-2011 01:16 AM

I went from xp to windows 7, never used vista. 7 is allright i guess. Just another OS that's a little more slick than xp. It works, that's all i care for.

I`ve been using windows 7 for about 2-3 months now and I don`t get it either. Startup/shut down is maybe a little bit faster, but thats about it really.

DamianJ 08-25-2011 01:33 AM

Windows sucks lol get a mac lol lol windows hahah

calvinawe 08-25-2011 01:40 AM

Windows 7 is superior compared to Vista. Not that bulky, simplified to a comfortable extent and does not eat up that much resource.

you really dont see it? you will, stability is perfect finally

Apple OS sucks, Windows is a pain, Linux is too much. I wrote my own operating system and drivers using machine language. 001000101010101000010101001001101001

The snap and drop it into the sides and top, I thought was mimmicky & crap watching the adverts, but since having 7, I use that facility quite a bit :thumbsup

7 rocks :2 cents:

MetaMan 08-25-2011 09:17 PM

Windows 7 is amazing. I love it. Macs are for losers.

AzteK 08-25-2011 10:36 PM

So far it's been solid. It seems like they have brought the stability of their server lines to the desktop. I'm able to run the same amount of applications and my system isn't fazed like it used to. Today I was able to open 200+ documents and they loaded instantaneously. I also have better access to my documents and my tool bar is well organized. I haven't even put the 8 gigs in.

martinsc 08-26-2011 03:42 AM

They did a great job with windows 7!
great performance and very stable!

if the last one you used is win95, you can not comment on this topic

You don't need no stinkin Winblows for Netflix. One of my Linux boxes came with it included in the default installation. That one is Mythdora, which is Fedora with MythTV preinstalled. I'm sure the packages are available for other major distributions.

do you still have to write your own drivers?

You know I've had very few driver issues in fifteen years of Linux.
Last year I bought a laptop at Wal-Mart. Before putting a real OS on it, I booted it up just to test it, with the preinstalled Windows. Everything worked fine except the wireless card. I did some digging and Windows says there is no driver installed for the card. That's odd. I go to Acer's web site and see drivers for the video card, for sound, everything but the wireless card. I Google the chipset. No Windows driver anywhere. Fuck it. I pop in a Linux install disk and when it's done installing Linux it's online. No Windows driver to be found, but Linux includes the right driver on the OS disk.

I found it to be similar with SATA and SAS target drivers. They don't seem to be available for Windows at all.

Are you still waiting for 64 bit Flash? We had it in 2008.

It won't be obvious at first. I didn't have the worst experience with Vista, but Seven really stuck out as being far superior, after a few weeks of use. The networking was beautiful for me. I run an animation render farm of 7 computers, and I haven't had one single network related issue in my 2 years on Win7. Also, network discovery and just everything seems to be much smoother. It rocks.

As far as being on 64 bit goes, if you do anything serious, you're going to really notice the RAM bump you can get. I have 24GB and After Effects has never worked better.

How to watch Netflix (Watch Instantly) in Linux

Other Methods Other methods that DON'T work (as of 5/10/2011)

To paraphrase; " Render unto Gates the things that are Gates' " (Just pay the stinkers off).

For me it is easier to dual boot into Win7 than screw around with Virtual Machines. I am just not that much of a purist.
  • There are some tax/accounting software that will not run under wine.

  • I need an easy way to access our encrypted SIP server.

  • While I do all my memos and other work in opensource; txt, csv, xhtml, pdf, the vast majority of office personnel use the Windows platform ? most Win MIME types have a LINUX program to read and edit them when necessary. However, I have the alternative of a native Windows method available.

A VM would accomplish the same I just went the "fast and dirty approach." "Git 'er done and move on"

  • Yahoo! Chat has voice and cam in Winblows ? I met a hot redhead RN last night nearby (hehehe) >:=)).

A VM might be a solution but the new comp that has the dual boot is a 3rd comp in my office so its not a critical unit (to be active with server daemons running at all times).

Overall, Windows 7 is stable maybe but slow as syrup ... It's the latest model Yugo with eye candy add ons. For a commercial, secure setup I wouldn't recommend it if you have the technical abilities for LINUX.

The Windows advantage is point and click ease and therein, without going into elaboration, are its shortcomings also ...

Antonio 08-26-2011 08:25 AM

I skipped Vista, but Windows 7 rocks. In XP, it was a nightmare to network even two PCs, in Windows 7, I just plug in the cables and that's that

JamesGw 08-26-2011 11:12 AM

7 is definitely better than XP and Vista.

Linux is alright if you can be bothered to learn how to use it or even want to. I prefer Windows for most daily use.

FlowerKid 08-26-2011 11:22 AM

7 for the office and FreeBSD or Linux for servers.
