Blockbuster to close all stores in Canada

I don't know anyone that rents physical discs from stores anymore. Surprised it took this long.

another Blockbuster success story.

Mom and pop outlets arise from the ashes!!!

BJ 08-31-2011 06:13 PM

I rent mental discs.

Redrob 08-31-2011 06:16 PM

I actually got a call from Rentrack this last month asking if I'd be interested in setting up new video rental operations in my local market.

Rochard 08-31-2011 07:26 PM

People do rent disks from the store. Last year my kid had to watch some movie as part of their homework assignment so a quick trip a block away to blockbuster did the trick.

But otherwise I can't remember the last time I rented a DVD.

I use Blockbuster a lot...

When I'm on vacation in a foreign country.

candyflip 08-31-2011 07:42 PM

All of them around me are gone. I couldn't tell you where the closest open BB is at this point.

FOR REAL! damn, I remember back in the day my dad used to take my brother and I to this hole in the wall to rent VHS movies and NES games.

Red Box is convenient and that person who invented it is genius. Why pay $6 for a VOD movie when you can pick it up from the store for $1. I'm still the kind of guy that doesnt like to wait for shit and was suprised a few weeks ago when I wanted to see the movie Limitless it wasnt on VOD so went to, what I thought was still a blockbuster but CLOSED. So was another one. All gone

PromoterX 08-31-2011 07:51 PM

I blame torrents.

Horny Dude 09-01-2011 12:59 AM

They closed most of them here in San Diego. I haven't been to one in years. Blockbuster was the shit on the weekends. Rent 4 movies and watch them all weekend. No it's either Netflix or Red Box, VOD if I'm too lazy to go out.

BIGTYMER 09-01-2011 01:01 AM

Ehh????!

Well my friends tell me it's quicker to download a movie via torrent then it is to drive to blockbuster.

Not to mention the fucking gas prices.

CurrentlySober 09-01-2011 02:39 AM

Impressed that hey can close ALL stores in Canada...

What about the stores that sell groceries, and are in no way related to them?

Must be a bummer...

Really? Shit my parents are gonna be bummed, they don't really like using the web all that much. I guess I'll have to school them on Netflix next time I'm in SD. That was their ritual in the weekends. Scares me to think what they have resorted to doing now :helpme

BlackCrayon 09-01-2011 04:49 AM

i used to use them to rent video games.

My buddy got laid off a while back after 17 years of service to Blockbuster. He was absolutely shocked as Blockbuster was still a profitable venture in Canada. He thought for sure the company would be sold to a competitor to pay down Blockbuster's USA debt.

If your buddy worked for Blockbuster video store for 17 years he has much bigger issues than losing his job with Blockbuster.

There is still a Blockbuster open near my place here in central FL. I really like jumping on my bicycle for the short ride to it which gets me some exercise. I like browsing the isles, looking at the case covers to see what's out. They also have a huge video game section with multiple copies so I can almost always find the game I want on the shelf. The staff has always been very cool and I enjoy their conversation. They have recently reduced their prices and my favorite now is .49 movies on Sunday.

For me personally, its a welcome diversion to step away from my computer and make a trip to my local Blockbuster. I think it would suck if I had to get everything without leaving the house or interacting with the outside world. :winkwink:

I like the whole idea of going in to rent a movie.. it's like sending a letter.
I guess we're all way to busy for this SHIT now though :)

So long BB, it was fun while it lasted!

BlackCrayon 09-01-2011 07:17 AM

Haven't even seen them around my neck of the woods yet. But then again, I can't even get a taxi where I live.:Oh crap

JamesGw 09-01-2011 07:41 AM

I used to really like block buster. Always had the game pass and unlimited rental subscription thing.

i noticed one in a near-by grocery store. i've seen them elsewhere before too. i guess after 24-48 the discs don't work anymore but not bad for a dollar.

Sophie Delancey 09-01-2011 08:07 AM

Yeah, every store around here has been closed for a while!

_Richard_ 09-01-2011 08:19 AM

one in kits always seems busy

bronco67 09-01-2011 08:22 AM

I'm kind of bummed I can't walk into a damn video store, and browse the boxes. Netflix can't match that experience, and also doesn't have the immediacy of being able to rent on a whim.

Redbox sucks. They don't even get half of the new releases, and they take longer to get stuff. I rent the occasional movie from there, but its mostly for mouth breathers that want to see the new Katherine Heigl movie. If want anything obscure or indie, you're fucked.

drmadcat 09-01-2011 08:26 AM

well im fine as were so fucking behind in Australia they will be open for another 10 years here
