Australian webmasters, do you feel the speed pain?

I've been working on a project and it's 25GB of content, mostly photos but lots of sound and video content too. Huge project I have been working on for a USA company for the last 6 months. Finally got it finished and now I have to upload it. But wait... the internet is so fucking slow in Australia that im getting a .25 mbps upload speed.

Easy option, get my row boat and get hoping to the USA with my portable hard drive.
I should make it into CA in about a month if im lucky.

I know this video was back in 2009 but still, it's not improved yet.

I have Fibre, I'll replace it once the NBN comes.

Yeah, im on Internode ADSL2 now and will get NBN if im still in the country when it comes to my area. Should be about 4 years away yet. Which is a joke within itself.

Just get fibre through one of the larger ISP's. It's not overly expensive all things considered.

Zorgman 09-01-2011 10:42 PM

Can't get fibre in my area atm. Small town.

Ah, yeah that kind of makes fibre unattainable , how about business grade DSL with better upload speeds ?

wdsguy 09-01-2011 11:24 PM

Does that mean if I come to Australia all the hotels have shit speeds?

how much is not overly expensive? no prices on the tpg site.

georgeyw 09-01-2011 11:37 PM

I'm on internode ADSL2 aswell. The download speeds are fine, upload on the other hand is slow as a wet week.

They are some pretty steep prices. I really cannot see the value in either of those plans.

It's not for everybody, it's great for us.

tabasco 09-02-2011 12:25 AM

Don't worry Julia is on the case. We'll have speeds the envy of the world soon!

AdultKing 09-02-2011 12:29 AM

Julia will be lucky to see the end of next week out before she's selling the Big Issue :upsidedow

bhutocracy 09-02-2011 02:20 AM

I don't feel it that much but can't wait for the NBN. Pretty much the main reason I hope labor hobbles on. If Abbott scrapes in and scrapped it he'd deserve to be strung up with fibre optic cable. Hopefully it all gets tied up and it can't be undone

Zorgman 09-02-2011 02:58 AM

Tabasco, Julia is on her way out. Soon as she's gone we're be heading back to the dark days where only the mega cities will get wireless internet. TonyA is a pussy. I don't want to vote for either of them but I will have to go "duck" Julia just because of my interest in the NBN.

The max I can get with ADSL2 is 1mbps up which is crap. Specially when I have 25GB to upload.

tabasco 09-02-2011 03:13 AM

lol was being sarcastic guys

Aka_Bluey 09-02-2011 03:33 AM

Townsville in Nth Qld got the NBN switched on yesterday, can not wait to see it offered by the isps around here soon.

.

Aka_Bluey 09-02-2011 03:48 AM

From Nth Qld with Telstra's 20mb down 1mb up plan

Zorgman 09-02-2011 04:32 AM

If I can get the NBN I will get the 100down/40up plan. It's about $120 to $200 month I think. That could really help me.

Aka_Bluey 09-02-2011 04:06 PM

Zorgman, what speed is your plan with Internode ADSL2 giving you now, and is it the fastest they offer where you are? What is the cost?

.

Zorgman 09-02-2011 06:00 PM

I have an ADSL2 connection with 20 down/1 up. But because im 900 meters away from the exchange it's more like 3mbps / 0.5 mbps up. It's about $50 a month.
I get 60 GB of data per month to download. Uploads are counted too, so it goes quickly.

cams2chat 09-03-2011 12:42 PM

Low Expectations

Having lived in the Philippines and Thailand for a lot of years I am used to 3rd world connections. I dont expect much and the Sydney internet really makes me feel I am still in a 3rd world country.

I spend a lot of time in Vegas and for a fraction of the cost I get actual speed...... Julia and her merry band are systematically fucking jobs, incentive and just about everything else that makes Australia in a lucky position at the moment.

The sooner they get rid of her the better.

Adam_M 09-03-2011 06:14 PM

For bigger uploads in AU you are far better off to just go get a hard drive, copy the content on and ship.

My speed at home is ok, wireless on the laptop

Zorgman 09-03-2011 06:48 PM

Adam, your lucky. Check mine.

CaptainWolfy 09-03-2011 07:03 PM

can't you drive to some isp office and ask how much would it coast you just to upload data for you or something like that ? ISP did that for me few years ago when we had 1mb/128kbs

Mutt 09-03-2011 07:25 PM

believe me Canada is no better - third world Internet at higher prices than Europeans and Americans pay for speeds 10x faster

and the Canadian sheep just baaaaaaa quietly in their little pasture
